2 WORD OF THE LORD PROMISES Today s liturgy is full of promises. The reading from Genesis promises a final triumph over the power of sin and a return to a new crea on. The reading from Second Corinthians promises that all who follow Christ will have to struggle. It also promises, however, that we can persevere if we but recognize that Christ is within us, renewing us daily, and giving us the courage and the strength we need to endure. The Gospel promises that doing God s will makes us family with Jesus, who forgives all sin and triumphs over evil. Today, might be a good day for us to make some promises as well. We can promise to stop kidding ourselves about our own tendencies to selfishness and sin. We can promise ourselves to believe really believe that while we are not sinless, we are forgiven. 3 ANNOUNCEMENTS Host a Seminarian for Dinner! Saint Paul is hos ng three seminarians this summer for 8 weeks. Their names are Adam Gale, John Lewis and Ross Williams. We would like to offer an opportunity for our parishioners to get to know them. We are se ng up a schedule for parishioners who would enjoy invi ng a seminarian for dinner while they are here. SAINT OF THE WEEK SAINT BARNABAS Barnabas, a Jew of Cyprus, comes as close as anyone outside the Twelve to being a full-fledged apostle. He was closely associated with Saint Paul he introduced Paul to Peter and the other apostles and served as a kind of mediator between the former persecutor and the s ll suspicious Jewish Chris ans. Paul and Barnabas, were seen as charisma c leaders, and were sent by An och officials to preach to the gen les. Enormous success crowned their efforts. (see Acts 14:8-18). But all was not peaceful. and even the best of friends can have differences. When Paul wanted to revisit the places they had evangelized, Barnabas wanted to take along his cousin Mark, author of the Gospel, but Paul insisted that since Mark had deserted them once, he was not fit to take along now. The disagreement that followed was so sharp that Barnabas and Paul separated: Barnabas taking Mark to Cyprus, Paul taking Silas to Syria. Later they were all reconciled. 5 June 10, 2018 Ordained a Deacon June 12, th Anniversary Did you know that God is crazy-in-love with YOU? Can I get an Amen for that? When asked about his years in ministry, Deacon Michael Mahoney says he is living the dream. I have loved my life as a deacon, he added. Deacon Mahoney grew up in Indiana and Florida and joined the U.S. Marines when he was 18. Growing up in the Protestant faith, he became Catholic at the age of the 20 while serving in England. A er more than 20 years in the military, he re red and began his life in ministry. He earned degrees from Benedic ne College (BA in philosophy and religious studies), Naval War College (Master s degree in strategic studies), Cornell University (Master s degree in philosophy of religion), St. Bernard s School of Theology and Ministry (Master of Divinity) and Ashland Theological Seminary (Doctorate in ministry). From , Deacon Mahoney served as a pastoral associate at St. Columba/St. Patrick, Caledonia. While studying for the diaconate in 1991, he served as a pastoral associate at St. Stephen Church in Geneva and con nued to serve there following his ordina on. He served as pastoral administrator and parish deacon at St. Mary of the Assump on, Sco sville ( ), and as parish deacon at Holy Family Catholic Community, Wayland ( ). He also led courses, ministry reflec on groups, retreats and workshops at St. Bernard s from Deacon Mike is an Oblate of Saint Benedict, a personal commitment in the Benedic ne tradi on. Deacon Mahoney is currently the parish deacon at Saint Paul Church in New Bern, N.C., where he and his wife of 47 years, Mone e, relocated in The couple has five children and 12 grandchildren. Deacon Mahoney also is founder of the Gates Ministry and provides counseling, spiritual direc on, retreats and workshops for individuals, couples and families. For the last 10 years, Deacon Mike has dedicated his ministry to the good of the people of Saint Paul, especially with that rare gi of spiritual counseling: a healing and libera ng freedom. His work with Faith Connec ons has been a great addi on to the culture of the churches of New Bern. His ecumenical work, especially in support of pastors for their healing and effec veness, has led him across the country. Deacon Mike is engaged in a wri ng project to capture what he has learned in his many diaconal ministries of service and gospel authen city and to share his wisdom with others. His North Carolina parish will celebrate Deacon Mahoney s anniversary during the weekend before his anniversary and at the 8 am Mass on June 12 th, the actual date of his Ordina on. At the Mass, he will wear a special anniversary stole made by the wife of one of the deacons from the Diocese of Raleigh.
