4 Father Michael Schuetz is leading a Pilgrimage to Italy! November 8-17, 2017 The pilgrimage will spend time in Siena, Assisi, and Rome. While in these cities, the group will have a chance to visit many historical, artistic, cultural, and religious treasures of Italy and of the Catholic Church. Mass will also be celebrated daily in many historic venues, such as St Peter s Basilica, and the group will have an opportunity to attend a Papal Audience. The pilgrimage will cost $3800 for double occupancy rooms; included in the cost is round trip airfare out of Raleigh-Durham, accommodations at centrally located 4-Star hotels, ground transportation in Italy, entrance fees for guided sightseeing, and several meals. 5 SAINT PAUL SCHOOL NEWS Saint Paul School students recently par cipated in the Young Authors Project, sponsored by the North Carolina Reading Associa on. The theme for this year s contest was Step Outside: Wri ng about the Natural World. Students were encouraged to write about their personal experiences with the natural world or inves gate a topic pertaining to the natural world. Submissions included fic on, non-fic on and poetry. We are pleased to announce that Saint Paul has four State Winners! Congratula ons to these students for a great job as well as to all students who par cipated, their teachers and their parents. In addi on, Fridays during Lent are obligatory days of abs nence. For members of the La n Catholic Church, the norms on fas ng are obligatory from age 18 un l age 59. When fas ng, a person is permi ed to eat one full meal, as well as two smaller meals that together are not equal to a full meal. The norms concerning abs nence from meat are binding upon members of the Catholic Church from age 14 onwards. If possible, the fast on Good Friday is con nued un l the Easter Vigil (on Holy Saturday night) as the "paschal fast" to honor the suffering and death of the Lord Jesus, and to prepare ourselves to share more fully and to celebrate more readily his Resurrec on h p:// Lent is a peniten al season of prayer, fas ng, and almsgiving, but Jesus reminds us that none of our peniten al prac ces call us to be gloomy. Rather, we are called to turn our lives around. If we prac ce giving alms, but seem to do so only to bring a en on to ourselves, then our giving has li le meaning. If we prac ce changing our lives, and do so with joy, then that prac ce will lead to more joy. Lent is a season of renewal for our Chris an community, a me to rediscover our iden ty in Christ. As Lent begins this Ash Wednesday, let us proclaim with inner joy our lives grounded in Christ, united by the Holy Spirit and welcomed home by the Father. If we prac ce our Faith with eagerness, prayerfulness and inner consistency, then our bap smal call and our bap smal nature will emerge, and a joyful Christ will be our face to the world. Michael Shugrue, diocesan administrator for the Diocese of Raleigh: The na onal discussion regarding immigra on and the refugee program has brought to the surface a variety of legi mate concerns that require calm discernment. The priority of the Church is to assist the human person spiritually, but also to advocate for their physical and emo onal well-being. This applies to all people. Any immigra on or refugee system must balance three guiding principles. First, people have the right to migrate to sustain their lives and the lives of their families. Second, a country has the right to regulate its borders and to control immigra on. Lastly, a country must regulate its borders with jus ce and mercy. Above all else, we must remain rooted in prayer. We must pray for those fleeing poverty, violence and oppression, that they be protected. We must pray for poli cians and government officials who are tasked with upholding the American tradi on of providing safety to those in need as well as to protect its ci zens. We must pray that the countries from which refugees are fleeing would put an end to the violence, and that they would enjoy the peace and joy found in Our Lord Jesus Christ. Sister Donna Markham OP, PhD, president and CEO of Catholic Chari es USA: I am especially worried about the innocent children and mothers who have fled for their lives without support and are now caught in this regre able and terribly frightening situa on," Sister Donna said. "While I certainly appreciate the importance of ve ng to insure the safety of our country, I also believe we must treat those who are most vulnerable with compassion and mercy and with hearts willing to be opened wide in the face of dire human need." Bishop Joe S. Vásquez of Aus n, Texas, chairman of the Commi ee on Migra on for the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, stated, in part: "The United States has long provided leadership in rese ling refugees. We believe in assis ng all those who are vulnerable and fleeing persecu on, regardless of their religion. This includes Chris ans, as well as Yazidis and Shia Muslims from Syria, Rohingyas from Burma, and other religious minori es. However, we need to protect all our brothers and sisters of all faiths, including Muslims, who have lost family, home, and country. They are children of God and are en tled to be treated with human dignity. We believe that by helping to rese le the most vulnerable, we are living out our Chris an faith as Jesus has challenged us to do." "Today, more than 65 million people around the world are forcibly displaced from their homes. Given this extraordinary level of suffering, the U.S. Catholic Bishops will redouble their support for, and efforts to protect, all who flee persecu on and violence, as just one part of the perennial and global work of the Church in this area of concern."
