2 FOLLOW IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF CHRIST The great fifty-day celebration of Easter has concluded, as have the feasts honoring the Holy Trinity and the Body and Blood of Christ. Last week we began a long stretch of Ordinary Time that will bring us to late November. Saint Paul tells us today that those who are baptized "have clothed yourselves with Christ" (Galatians 3:27). This scripture is echoed in the Church's baptism ritual when we sing, "You have put on Christ, in him you have been baptized."this message is inspiring and sobering at the same time, for in today's Gospel, we get to the heart of what it means to be clothed in Christ. The Lord tells us, "If anyone wishes to come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me" (Luke 9:23). For the next twenty-two weeks we are called to take up the cross and, with Saint Luke as our guide, follow in the footsteps of Christ. TODAY'S READINGS First Reading -- Zechariah foretells the Messiah (Zechariah 12:10-11; 13:1). Psalm -- My soul is thirsting for you, O Lord my God (Psalm 63). Second Reading -- There are no distinctions or divisions; we all belong to Christ (Galatians 3:26-29). Gospel -- Peter proclaims Jesus as the Christ; Jesus speaks of his great suffering to come (Luke 9:18-24). 3 5TH ANNUAL SEMINARIAN SUMMER VOCATION INVITATIONAL Thinking you may want to be a priest? Come play kickball! How easy! Friday, June 24TH -- 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM Bishop Burbidge and the Seminarians of the Diocese of Raleigh invite you to attend the 5th Annual Seminarian Summer Vocation Invitational event. The evening will include a kick ball game between a team of seminarians against a team of high school/college-aged men and other sporting events. (Matthew 23:9) Jesus tells his disciples and well he should, when the comparison he offers is His Heavenly Father! Every one of those we call father on earth can NOT measure up to such a comparison. If the Word were so restricted, every human male with the hope of having a positive and constructive influence on children would have to find a different word. But, can we imitate God? Can we model our hopes and aspirations for ourselves and others on the best God has taught us of himself? Of course, we can. Of course, we must. This is why we use the word Father, easily, eagerly, purposefully. Our biological fathers have that most direct of relationships. Our spiritual fathers every teacher, every wise one, guide, coach, mentor, professor, boss (!) has that role to some degree. Through every one of these earthly examples, we are aiming spiritually at just that right relationship with God that Jesus refers to when he says Call no one on earth your Father! Let's never be satisfied with the human shortcomings or the personal idiosyncrasies of our fathers alive or dead, biological, intellectual or spiritual. I am sure that not one of our earthly fathers is satisfied that he has effectively and effortlessly achieved the goal of fatherhood. He knows he hasn't! Because the goal of fatherhood is to be as provident, loving and empowering as God the Father is, especially in the religion of Jesus Christ, Son of the Father! His ideal is the one that matters because it is REVELATION, not accomplishment. It is TRUTH, not trying. When it comes to the priesthood, we call the priest father... aiming exactly where Jesus aims: a title of honor that is intended to get every one of us, even the priest, closer to God the Father. One could as easily say Call no one on earth your father as one can say Let everyone on earth be called your father... when they lead you to God, confirm your ideals, inspire your striving, embrace you in weakness, go to bat for you in error and teach you about love! For Father Bill Upah, every time he hears the title Father he knows that there are great expectations of him: each of us needs him to point us in the God-direction, to aim our hearts higher. Calling the priest father is a way of saying I KNOW you're not God... but show me where God may be found! Peace, Happy Father's Day! Farewell to Father William Upah! Greetings to Father Michael Schuetz! Happy Father's Day especially if Father's Day brings us closer to God our Heavenly Father!

Ask God to provide leaders and helpers for this important mission. RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION PROGRAM Do you attend mass but are NOT Catholic? Are you married to a non-catholic who has voiced an interest in our faith? Were you baptized Catholic but never received any other sacraments? If you have answered yes to any of these questions please call us to enroll in our next RCIA program that will begin in the Fall. We meet every Sunday morning from 9:15 to 10:30 in the FLC. Our goal is to help you become educated in the faith and to prepare you to receive the sacraments. Please call the church office at to register or Marcelene McLure at for detailed information. The Fortnight begins on the vigil for the feast days of St. Thomas More and St. John Fisher. Both More and Fisher were patriots. They never rose up to incite rebellion or foment revolution. But when the law of the king came into conflict with the law of Christ, they chose Christ. These men gave their lives for the freedom of the Church and for freedom of conscience. They bear witness to the truth that no government can make a claim on a person s soul. PRIESTS, DEACONS AND RELIGIOUS APPRECIATION DAY On June 19 the Catholic Daughters of the Americas will celebrate Priests, Deacons & Religious Appreciation Day. Please join us and say a personal prayer for Father Tully, Father Upah, Deacon Mahoney, Deacon Fisher, Deacon Kierski and Sister Monique for all they do for our parish, our school and our community. We want them to know how much they are appreciated, and if possible please relate a personal greeting to them.

5 July 6th 7:00PM Saint Paul Church ALTAR SERVERS Join the Tully/Schuetz Team! We need you! We are about to train a newly ordained priest in his first assignment. We are training new servers also, so there will be all ages of rookies at each Mass over the coming weeks. :) Our parishioners may have noticed some additional altar servers at Mass recently. Please be patient while we get them up to speed. If your child is interested in serving for the upcoming school year, he/she needs to come on board this summer. Please contact Katie Shorter at andykatieshorter@hotmail.com THANK YOU FROM THE KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS On June 2 nd, 3 rd and 4 th, the Fourth Degree Knights held another great sale. There were approximately 2,000 shoppers throughout the entire sale. Our thanks go to the many wonderful Knights, their wives, friends of the Knights and the young and ambitious Marines. In addition we would like to thank everyone for their donations and also for shopping at the sale. A special thanks to all those that baked desserts for the yard sale workers to enjoy at lunch. This is how the Knights Assembly helps so many others in the community, especially the Wounded Warriors Leave Program, MERCI Clinic, Special Olympics, EPIC, Saint Paul Catholic Church and School. We will shortly begin working to get ready for the next sale to be held on October 20, 21 and 22 nd. The Saint Paul School Athletic Department had an outstanding season this year. They had boys and girls basketball, volleyball, cheerleading, golf and soccer. To assist there were approximately 12 coaches. The sports banquet was a big success with over 100 people in attendance. RELIGIOUS COMMUNITY SERVICE Saint Paul's new day of work at Religious Community Services is the 1st Tuesday of each month. We are looking for volunteers to serve meals to the less fortunate of our community. Can you spare just 4 hours (8 am to 12 noon) on the 1st Tuesday of each month? There are other days available for Saint Paul Parishioners to work. This is worthwhile! This is serving the Lord! This is corporal works of Mercy! WE NEED YOU! Call DeLesa Conway at at the church office to volunteer Father Tully presents to Juliette Rogers, of Religious Community Services, a check for $ This is money donated for this purpose in special collections by Saint Paul parishioners because of their decades' long support of RCS and the wonderful work that RCS achieves in the Corporal Works of Mercy: feeding the hungry and sheltering the homeless. RCS leads among helping agencies in the holistic approach they take for the aid of the poor to help change their future. The check is last year's overage given by parishioners above the regular monthly commitment of the parish. Thanks for making this happen!
