2 WORD OF THE LORD MEMORIES AND DREAMS Throughout our lives, we retain the language and habits of our na ve region and family of origin. Should we return to our home a er a long absence, we quickly revert to its familiar speech and prac ces. Our deep memory is reflected in old stories and words and speech pa erns. This familiarity runs like an underground river and accompanies us wherever we go. Not only do we remember, we are incorporated into and made part of a greater memory. In remembering and recollec ng, we are in turn gathered up and recollected. Today we remember Mary, a small figure travelling the country roads to visit Elizabeth. All the great pronouncements and dreams of the prophets point to this me when the Lord s words to Mary would be gathered and fulfilled. 3 THE ROAD TO SAINTHOOD Mother Mary Elizabeth Lange ( ) Mother Mary Lange was the foundress and first Superior General of the Oblate Sisters of Providence ( ), the first congrega on of African American women religious in the history of the Catholic Church. On July 2, 1829, Elizabeth and three other women professed their vows and became the Oblate Sisters of Providence. This congrega on would educate and evangelize African Americans. They educated youth and provided a home for orphans. Slaves who had been freed were educated and at mes admi ed into the congrega on. They nursed the terminally ill during the cholera epidemic of 1832, sheltered the elderly, and even served as domes cs at St. Mary s Seminary. She was born Elizabeth Lange, a na ve of the Caribbean, believed to be Cuban born of Hai an descent. By 1813 Providence directed her to Bal more, Maryland where a large community of French speaking Catholics from Hai was established. Mother Mary Lange prac ced faith to an extraordinary degree. 4 PASTORAL COUNCIL NEWS HIGHLIGHTS FROM 12/2018 PASTORIAL COUNCIL MEETING * The school has formed an Advancement Commi ee to develop a long-term sustainable program for the con nued advancement and success of SPCS and to look at other outside funding versus event fundraising ac vi es. * The SPCS Gala is scheduled for March 23, * The school is looking at marke ng programs with emphasis on ge ng the school message to parents of poten al students as well as the parish and the community. An outside consultant will help to develop an ambassador program. * Plans are underway to highlight Catholic Schools Week at the end of January. * Planning is underway for the annual AAMEN group s St. Joseph s Day Celebra on which is tenta vely scheduled for March 16, One of the ac vi es of the day may include a tour visi ng various important loca ons of the early years in the African American Catholic community in New Bern. * We are in the process of planning a survey of 11 am Mass a endees addressing ques ons regarding the music ministry at that Mass. * We currently have 27 first year and 18 second year Confirma on candidates taking classes in order to receive the sacrament. * We con nue to discuss direc ves and goals for Parish Campus and Technology and commi ees are mee ng regularly. Father Tully expressed the work so far represents a good beginning but we also need to look at all issues with a 3-5 year vision on what we want our parish to look like. This also includes our parish direc ves for Religious Educa on and Youth Ministry for the future. * The parish will be hos ng a 4-day Parish Retreat at the end of January a er the Feast of the Conversion of St. Paul. It will consist of day and evening programs as well as Mass, music, and anoin ng of the sick. We hope to invite and reach unchurched Catholics for this event. It will be given by Fr. Ian Bardanave O.P. Dear Friends at Saint Paul: This bulle n of the Fourth Sunday of Advent is the last before our great Feast of the Na vity of the Lord. Merry Christmas! I pray that our gracious and ever-present God may treasure, protect and empower you and yours through the gi of the Christ Child. May all that the good Lord deigns to bring us in his never failing love be for one another a source of hope. As the Child grows into the Man, so may each of us be changed by God's grace to be more the people he has called us to be. This Christmas 2018 Anno Domini seems like an anchor in troubled waters: the season and the customs and the music are milestones for us. A great holiday like this can help us to realize that the world hasn't changed; that there are reliable memories; that me can help us move toward good things and we can treasure the people in our lives. Every Christmas is unique and unrepeatable but we also know that every Christmas is humble and heart-warming and homey. May it be so for you. Again, Merry Christmas! The Parish Mission is a month away: you will find elsewhere in this bulle n both a basic schedule for the Mission and a prayer of prepara on you could bring into your daily prayers star ng now. It is prayer that will give us an adequate prepara on to receive God's blessing. Each of us can be be er at our Chris an Life. Each of us can renew and deepen our prayer life. We could be more generous and ready servants. But how do we accomplish this? Have you been faithful in morning and evening prayer? Are your thoughts of God friendly, recurring, and moving -- or does he seem distant, theore cal, taken-for-granted? All of us tend to lapse a li le when life presses in on us or bad habits take over. All of us have ups and downs in our spiritual experience. A Parish Mission is like a retreat-inplace... a home-bound holy space just for you and me... it's like we're going away for spiritual growth while we stay right here! The most important thing is prayer Begin today: Lord, bless our Parish Mission as we place our trust in You, for each heart you intend to heal and brighten and claim for your own! 5 FOURTH SUNDAY OF ADVENT DECEMBER 23, 2018 Today s Readings: Micah 5:1-4; Psalm 80:2-3,15-19; Hebrews 10:5-10; Luke 1: In today s gospel, Elizabeth is carrying a child in her old age while her husband, Zechariah, is mute a er ques oning an angel about the child s concep on. When her rela ves visit from Nazareth, Elizabeth grasps that this event is greater than she thought. Her baby leaps in her womb and the Holy Spirit reveals to her the news that Mary brings to her. She recognizes God abundant blessing in both Mary and this child. With Christmas nearly here, let us welcome Christ into our hearts with the same joy that Elizabeth did, and pledge to be instruments of his peace in our families and our world. Holy Spirit, Lord and giver of life, you spoke through the prophets, and they foretold the coming of the Savior. You came upon the young virgin, and she conceived in her womb the Son of the Most High. You gave Elizabeth your gi of knowledge, and she called Mary the mother of my Lord. You willed John the Bap st with joy at the sound of Mary s gree ng, and he leaped in his mother s womb. We, too, desire your transforma ve power in our lives. We ask you to fill us to overflowing so we may boldly proclaim the coming of Christ, give birth to him each day in our hearts, know his presence in all we meet, and rejoice in the sure knowledge that he has come among us. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. THIS WEEK AT HOME Monday, Dec. 24 God reminds David that He is the giver of all gi s, that all David has is from Him. God shows his generosity by promising a kingship that will last forever. Jesus, King over all peoples, fulfills the promise. Let us give thanks for God s extravagant gi of his Son. Tuesday, Dec. 25 Finally our wait is over and we celebrate the birth of Jesus. When you see the child in the manger, remember this is no ordinary child! Jesus, the Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. Let us rejoice that Emmanuel God with us is born! Wednesday, Dec. 26 The feast of St. Stephen, the first martyr, refocuses us on the cost of discipleship. What is the cost of discipleship for us? Do you need to forgive someone who has wronged you? Thursday, Dec. 27 The gospel of St. John, the beloved disciple, is he who rested on Jesus breast during the Last Supper, remained with him at the Cross, and saw and believed at the empty tomb. He his our example of complete love of God as human beings. Friday, Dec. 28 Today we remember the boys that Herod slaughtered when he heard that Jesus, the new born king has escaped his grasp. He cannot abide a rival king. When we believe someone has taken something that is righ ully ours, we too can become enraged. What a different response Jesus counsels to turn the other cheek! Saturday, Dec. 29 The church con nues to celebrate this holy Christmas Time; lights s ll brighten our homes and yards to welcome Christ, our Light. Do we live in the light? It is never too late to request or give forgiveness, to give up a grudge, to reconcile with another. Only then will we truly live in the light of Christ.
