He became quite wealth, but instead of spending lavishly on himself, he supported the Church and the poor. He and his wife sheltered orphans, refuges and other street people in their home.

4 ` THE ROAD TO SAINTHOOD PASTOR S CORNER Venerable Pierre Toussaint ( ) Venerable Pierre Toussaint was born a slave in Hai. Philanthropist & Founder of many Catholic charitable works. As a slave, Venerable Pierre Toussaint was brought from Hai to New York and appren ced under a popular hairstylist in the city. He eventually became the most sought a er hairdresser of high society women. Upon the death of his master, he gained his freedom and was very successful as one of the country s first black entrepreneurs. He became quite wealth, but instead of spending lavishly on himself, he supported the Church and the poor. He and his wife sheltered orphans, refuges and other street people in their home. He founded one of New York s first orphanages and raised money for the city s first cathedral. Even during yellow fever epidemics, Toussaint would risk his life to help others by nursing the sick and praying with the dying. I have never felt I am a slave to any man or woman but I am a servant of Almighty God who made us all. When one of his children is in need, I am glad to be His slave. usccb.org/issues-and-ac on/cultural-diversity/african-american/ HURRICANE RELILEF UPDATE One day remains for farmers to sign up for Hurricane Florence agricultural disaster assistance. Farmers affected by Hurricane Florence have un l Dec. 10 to sign up for the Hurricane Florence Agricultural Disaster Program of The program will directly assist farmers who suffered losses to commodi es planted but not harvested before Sept. 13th and livestock. The N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services will administer the program, and assistance will be dependent upon funding from the N.C. General Assembly. With the holiday season upon us this is a busy me of year, but farmers need to make this a priority and get their applica ons in if they qualify for assistance, said Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler. If funded by legislators, this program will provide much needed cash flow to maintain agriculture and its mul plier effect for rural economies. Without it, we could see many farmers leave the business. The General Assembly directed the NCDA&CS to establish a Hurricane Florence Disaster Recovery plan in Session Law The sign-up period will end on Dec. 10. As the weeks go by, the decora on of the Advent Wreath will reveal what we all hope: that the Advent of Christ brings us a new transforma on of life from debris to beauty. Let us pray for one another that this Advent transforms us in grace! I am happy to announce a great opportunity to share in the transforming grace of Christ: our PARISH MISSION is being planned right now for the end of January, Save the Dates! The feast day of the Parish is the Conversion of Saint Paul on Friday, January 25, That weekend, January 26 & 27, we will have a visi ng preacher for each Mass. Then, on Sunday through Wednesday evenings, January 27 to 30, there will be a Mission Presenta on as a kind of parish retreat. Our visi ng Dominican Preacher will also have one day me program for those who don't drive at night or those who work second shi. Life in Christ was the blessing brought to thousands of people in the early church when Saint Paul was brought to faith in Jesus Christ. With the intercession of our Patron Saint, may our Parish Mission bring refreshment and renewal and growth to us. I would like to invite you to pray to God that He would anoint with His Holy Spirit all of the events and all the effects of the Parish Mission. I really hope that every parishioner would a end some part of -- or be er yet ALL -- the Parish Mission, certainly if you are reading this in the bulle n. Please go mark your calendar now for the last weekend, and the following week days, in January. I would also like you to begin to make a list of those who you know who should be invited to a end. Of course, it would be GREAT if some inac ve Catholics or especially former parish members could be reclaimed by us through the gi of God. That would be a wonderful blessing! We should all agree in prayer that our Good Shepherd Christ the Lord gather together all those parts of His flock that need spiritual renewal. I m serious by the grace of God, this Parish Mission could be a game changing event for the life of many people: You can cooperate with this goal by begging God to make it so. Amen!

5 SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT DECEMBER 9, 2018 TODAY S READING Baruch 5:1-9; Psalm 126:1-6; Philippians 1:4-6,8-11; Luke 3:1-6. This week the desert is where important things are happening. The word of God comes to John, the fulfillment of Isaiah s prophecy, is a voice...crying out in the desert. His urgent message for the people then and now prepare the way of the Lord. This happens when we come away to a place of silence to open your heart to Jesus, making straight his paths by removing resentment, bi erness, vengeful thoughts, anger, greed, envy, and anything else that might block his path to us. His great desire is to enter our hearts with the healing that he alone can bring. He will smooth the rough ways that are difficult for us to handle. When we let him make his home in our hearts, they will overflow to every person and situa on in our life. What a wonderful experience of the joy that we will know when Christ returns and all flesh shall see the salva on of God. READY TO FORGIVE Father of Mercy, You give us prophets who call us back to You by proclaiming Your mercy and loving kindness. You give us John the Bap st, a prophet to bridge the old and new covenants with a bap sm of repentance of the forgiveness of sins. Give us strength in our weak moments, li us up when we fall, and always reassure us that You are ready to forgive every me we leave behind what separates us from you. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. THIS WEEK AT HOME Monday, Dec. 10 Today s gospel encourages us to reach out to people with disabili es of all kinds, so that we can be witnesses in ac on that all are welcome in our church. Tuesday, Dec. 11 Today s gospel has an example of how Jesus is a good shepherd : when just one of us goes astray, he leaves the others behind to search for that one. God never forgets about us or gives up on us. Hold this fact near to your heart and remember it always. Wednesday, Dec. 12 Mary, Our Lady of Guadalupe, the Patroness of the Americas, showed concern for the poor when she appeared, with brown skin and wearing indigenous robes to Juan Diego near Mexico City in Mary gave hope to Mexico s oppressed people, and to this day she is invoked to intercede for the poor and suffering. Let us ask her to make us open to serving the poor and less fortunate, in imita on of her. Thursday, Dec. 13 Today the church honors St. Lucy, a martyr who died during the Roman Persecu on. She is said to have brought food to Chris ans hiding in the catacombs, wearing a wreath of candles to light her way. Lucy means light, let this be a reminder that in Advent we are wai ng for the Light of the World. Friday, Dec. 14 St. John of the Cross, suffered at the hands of his own Carmelite brothers, who imprisoned him for nine months. During that me of isola on, he was able to find deep communion with the Lord. His example is light to our feet, to spend me each day in Advent in prayer to and with the Lord. Saturday, Dec. 15 The prophet Elijah was sent by God to put an end to wrath before the day of the Lord. We need to prepare our hearts to be places of welcome and kindness, so that others will see us as people of peace.
