New Parishioners Please register with the parish office Paint Your Heart Out New Bern along with Neuse River Community Development Corporation has taken the initiative to invite Group Cares, a faith-based, service-learning organization for young people, to help local volunteers fix up homes for elderly, disabled and needy home owners living in New Bern. Volunteers from our area will join Group Cares: Mission New Bern and Paint Your Heart Out New Bern which will be held July 24-30, And we need your help for this important initiative. Imagine being part of a citywide event that connects with local and out-of-town volunteers, serves people in need by having their homes repaired, or stretches our reach into the neighborhoods around us. The best part is there are a variety of ways to get involved. The most pressing need right now is a local coordinator from Saint Paul Parish who can become the information gatherer and the people connector to this project that is already planned and in the works. 4 Meet Father Michael Schuetz I was born in Chicago and I am the oldest of 5 children. I have 2 brothers and 2 sisters. In 1996, my family moved to Raleigh and I grew up in the Raleigh area. In 2008, I graduated from St Thomas More Academy a private Catholic High School. In the Fall of the same year, I started college seminary in Philadelphia at St Charles Borromeo Seminary, sent there by the Bishop as a seminarian for our Diocese. I graduated from there in 2012 with a B.A. in Philosophy. That Fall, I started my theological studies for ordination to the priesthood at the Pontifical North American College in Rome, Italy. I studied in Rome for 4 years getting a Bachelors in Sacred Theology from the Pontifical University of St Thomas Aquinas (ed.: in Europe, this is the same as our Master s Degree). On April 11, 2015, I was ordained a deacon for the Catholic Church and on June 4, 2016, I was ordained a priest by Bishop Burbidge. Thanks be to God! I love to play sports, particularly basketball, and in my free time, I watch baseball I m a huge fan of the Chicago Cubs -- and I love to cook. I m looking forward to serving you as one of the priests here at St Paul Catholic Church. A Newly-Ordained Priest s First Blessing One of our favorite Catholic customs is when a priest celebrates his First Mass after ordination and he offers First Blessing after the Mass. Although the weekend Masses of July 2nd and 3rd here at Saint Paul are not First Masses, it is still a pious custom and a worthy request you can make of our newly-ordained priest. Don t hesitate to ask Father Schuetz for his First Blessing after each of the Masses. If other responsibilities are not pressing, he will gladly share that fresh, prayerful grace with you. Prayer as we welcome Father Schuetz Father of Love, send into the hearts of men and boys in our parish your Call for priesthood. Inspire and instruct them to respond with generosity and humility to your enabling and empowering grace. Bless our seminarians. Find for us those we can support in their discernment and help Saint Paul Parish to be a starting point for many new and happy priests. In Jesus name, Amen! Our parishioners may have noticed some additional altar servers at Mass recently. We are about to train a newly ordained priest in his first assignment. We are training new servers, so there will be all ages of rookie servers at each Mass over the coming weeks. Please be patient while we get them all up to speed. With a total of 12 graduates, there were unique facts about some of them. One student, Owen Rose, had attended Saint Paul since the three year old program; two students, Margaret Audilet and Anna Doban, attended Saint Paul since the four year old program and three students, Richard Elson, Bruno Pizani and Casey Osiecki, attended Saint Paul since Kindergarten. Actually neither statement is completely true. There are many things to do in this life, but really few things that are vitally important. When we take on the freedom that Christ offers us, we have all the time we need in this world, and even more in the next. Elisha, the prophet Elijah's chosen servant, was slightly befuddled about what he should do. Jesus demands something different, something more of his disciples. He calls us to a single-minded determination to drop everything and follow him. Now, not later.
