3 ST. FRANCIS The Reformer Rebuild my Church! That s the mission Christ gave to St. Francis and it s the perennial task of the Church in every age of its life. But how is the reform and renewal of the Church to be accomplished? The life of St. Francis demonstrates that Christ intends the founda ons of true and las ng reform to be built on the solid rock that is the radical witness of the saints. ST. THOMAS AQUINAS The Theologian The rela onship of faith and reason is under intense scru ny in an age beholden to the compe ng claims of fundamentalism and secularism. So called new atheists insist that the claims of religion amount to mere supers on. Others insist that the life of faith is a retreat into emo ons. St. Thomas Aquinas an cipated these objec ons and trends and demonstrated that to believe is to think and that the life of the mind is integral to life in Christ. BL. JOHN HENRY NEWMAN The Convert Is there any truth in ma ers of religion? Should the Church simply retreat in the face of the challenges of culture? John Henry Newman came into the Church as a convert and used his prodigious intellectual gi s to help the Church be er understand its iden ty and mission and engage the challenges of a secular age. Saints. Ar sts. Mys cs. Scholars. Bishop Robert Barron's CATHOLICISM series, an epic ten part documentary, took people around the world and deep into the Catholic Faith. The series aired on PBS and has been seen by millions. But there is s ll more of the story to tell. Bishop Barron is on a new journey to unlock the truth behind the Catholic Church's most influen al people. CATHOLICISM: The Pivotal Players is a mul -part film series that illumines a handful of saints, ar sts, mys cs, and scholars who not only shaped the life of the Church but changed the course of civiliza on. Tuesday evenings in January and February at Saint Paul Family Life Center beginning January 10th at 6:30pm. Seven sessions conducted by Father Tully and Father Schuetz. A video based discussion group and open ques on me for a quality Catholic learning experience. 4 SAINT PAUL SCHOOL NEWS On Thursday, December 15 th, the students of Saint Paul School, under the direc on of Megan Johnson, presented An Evening of Music and Joy in the Church. The evening began with our Fine Art Enhancement students playing a medley of Christmas songs. A er several selec ons by our piano students, the FAE Hoedown Class presented a deligh ul, and unique, version of The Twelve Days of Christmas. Then, the Sign Language class joined the Beginner Ukulele, Ukulele, and Guitar Ensemble class for several selec ons. The highlight of the evening was the Na vity: Christmas, a Story of Promise. Presenters were Narrators: Cara Edwards, Lauren Pudwell, Peyton Butler, Thomas Grear, Luke Puchalski and Izzie Gallman. Mary: Maddy Tivnan. Joseph: Avery Fisher. Angel: Laura Audilet. Shepherds: Jayden Sforza, Juan Pablo Cepeda, Skylar White, Lizzie Doban, and Lee Dodson. Kings: Chase Campbell, Tye Brown, and Harrison Crim. Crew: Ar e Elson and Max Hamby. Classes will resume on Tuesday, January 3. Happy New Year! BUNCO CDA will again have a Bunco Party in the FLC on January 22nd from 12:30 to 3:30. Tickets will be sold a er all Masses the weekend of January 7th and January 14th. Tickets can also be purchased from Beverly Hartung or Ellie Neumeister. 5 Father Michael Schuetz invites you to join him on an inspiring journey and pilgrimage to Italy from November 8-18, Father Schuetz studied at the seminary in Rome and is eager to share with you the many historical, ar s c, cultural, and religious treasures of Italy that only an insider knows! The program begins in Siena, one of the beau ful hill towns of Tuscany with a long rich history. We will do day excursions from there to Florence and other Tuscan treasures. We will visit the serene and inspiring town of Assisi en route back to Rome where we will explore historical, ar s c, and religious sights such as the Forum and Colosseum, the Va can with St. Peter s and the Va can Museums, and the catacombs and other early Chris an sites. Throughout the program we will learn about Italian food and wine, sample local recipes, and visit local ar sans. Each day we will celebrate Mass in historic venues. We ve also built in enough free me for you to shop, stroll quaint squares and streets, and take in the local atmosphere of Italy. SAINT OF THE WEEK SAINT ELIZABETH ANN SETON Elizabeth Ann Bayley was born in New York City, USA and raised as an Episcopalian. Her father, Richard Bayley, was a well-known doctor and her mother, Catherine, died when Elizabeth was just three years old. At 19, Elizabeth was the belle of New York and married a handsome, wealthy businessman, William Magee Seton. They had five children before his business failed and he died of tuberculosis. At 30, Elizabeth was widowed, penniless, with five small children to support. While in Italy with her dying husband, Elizabeth witnessed Catholicity in ac on through family friends. Three basic points led her to become a Catholic: belief in the Real Presence, devo on to the Blessed Mother and convic on that the Catholic Church led back to the apostles and to Christ. When she returned home to New York, she decided to become a Catholic. Her family and friends did not understand. They were very upset, but she went ahead with courage. Elizabeth joined the Church on March 4, To support her family and make sure her children received a proper educa on, Elizabeth opened a school in Boston and ran it like a religious community. A few years later, the archbishop invited Elizabeth to come and open a girls' school in Bal more. It was there that Elizabeth decided to live as a sister. Many women came to join her, including her sister, sister-in-law and her own daughters, Anna and Catherine. They became the American Sisters of Charity and Elizabeth was given the tle "Mother Seton." She started many Catholic schools and a few orphanages. She made plans for a hospital, which was opened a er her death. But Elizabeth was loved most for her care of the poor and the sick. Mother Seton died on January 4, 1821, in Emmitsburg, Maryland and became the first American-born ci zen to be bea fied (1963) and then canonized (1975). Her Na onal Shrine in Emmitsburg is also the home of Mount Saint Mary s College, which she helped found. Our resolution last year could have been Trust in God. But instead we went with Try New Pets
