Deacon Jim Hacke and his wife, Lisa, recently relocated to New Bern from San Diego, where Lisa grew up. Deacon Jim is a na ve of New Jersey and was ordained in 2009 in the Diocese of Paterson NJ and was originally assigned to St. Ma hew the Apostle Parish in Randolph, NJ where he served as the Director for Evangeliza on. He was also a member of the Social Concerns, Adult Faith Forma on and Liturgy commi ees and the Pastoral Council. Lisa and Jim also headed the Bap sm Prepara on program and Lisa was a Eucharis c minister and served on various other commi ees. While in San Diego, Deacon Jim was assigned to Our Mother of Confidence Parish and served as the Director of Evangeliza on and Adult Faith Forma on. Jim was also a member of the Pastoral Council, the Parish Catalyst Team, the Welcoming Commi ee, the Knights of Columbus Council # 9776 and facilitated the parish RCIA. A er a successful career in mortgage banking Deacon Jim has been involved in non-profit social services for the past 10 years serving the marginalized, seniors and their caregivers and the homeless. Lisa has enjoyed a successful career as a Senior Underwriter in Mortgage Banking. Jim and Lisa are the proud parents of Tim, Travis and Shamus and grandparents of Tyler James and Keira. Jim and Lisa enjoy me with family and friends, dining and wine tas ng and involvement in local events. Deacon Jim is firm believer in the words of Pope John Paul II that Pope Paul VI stated that the Church exists in order to evangelize. Jim and Lisa are looking forward to being an ac ve part of the church community of St. Paul s, the Diocese of Raleigh and the city of New Bern.

The days for this custom differ for the birth of a boy and a birth of a girl. If a boy child is born, the woman is unclean for seven days and then she remains at home for an addi onal thirtythree days for a total of 40 days. If a girl child is born, the woman is unclean for 14 days and then she remains at home for an addi onal sixty-six days for a total of 80 days. During these me periods, the woman touches nothing holy. February 2nd is exactly 40 days a er the birth of Jesus Christ and it is on this day that Mother Mary along with Joseph brought forth their newborn son, Jesus, to the Temple. Mother Mary was cleansed on this day. Jesus was presented to the Lord in the Temple on this day. During this me, an elderly holy man named Simeon was staying in Jerusalem. Simeon was told by the Holy Spirit that his death would not come un l he saw the Messiah. When Simeon held the baby Jesus, he knew that Jesus had come for the salva on of all. Simeon stated that Jesus was A light to the revela on of the Gen les and the glory of thy people of Israel. CANDLEMAS The light was the inspira on for the celebra on with candles. It was and s ll remains to this day a Chris an celebra on of the purifica on of Mother Mary and the first appearance of Jesus in the Temple. During the early years, people would place their candles outside the church in order to be blessed. They would then carry them in a procession to church in order to imitate the appearance of Jesus in the Temple. h p://

Celebrators of the holiday eventually declared clear skies on Candlemas meant a longer winter. The Roman legions, brought this tradi on to the Germans, who concluded that if the sun made an appearance on Candlemas Day, a hedgehog would cast a shadow, thus predic ng six more weeks of bad weather or "Second Winter." German immigrants brought the tradi on to Pennsylvania. In 1886, the editor of the town s newspaper proclaimed Punxsutawney Phil, the local groundhog, to be the one and only weather prognos ca ng groundhog. He issued this proclama on on Candlemas, and yes, Groundhog Day began. Phil's fame spread.
