Cyprian Davis, published The History of Black Catholics in the United States. This work highlighted the fact that people of African ancestry have been an important part of the church in this country since before the beginning of our great depression. Black Catholic Month has been reserved for November because a number of important dates to Catholics of African ancestry fall within this month. November 1 All Saint s Day provides an opportunity to review the lives of the hundreds of saints of African ancestry in the first 300 years of the Church; Saints Perpetua and Felicity, Pope St. Victor l, and the martyrs of Alexandria are a few of the saints of African ancestry who embraced the Gospel message. November 3 The Memorial of Saint Mar n de Porres, the first and only saint of African Ancestry in this hemisphere. November 19 the day in our Diocese this year when we will celebrate our annual African Heritage Celebra on at 3:00PM at Holy Name of Jesus Cathedral. We con nue to look to the saints, like Saint Peter Claver and Saint Pope John Paul ll, who said in his 1987 visit to the United States that the Church s evangeliza on and ministry to the African Catholic community is a sign of unity and universality of the Church and of her mission. Please let an usher or the sacristan know before Mass. (This must be done every me as we do not reserve consecrated low-gluten hosts in the Tabernacle. A specifically-designated pyx (communion box) is held by the Priest Presider with only low gluten hosts. The communicant needs to be in the Presider's line. The communicant iden fies himself or herself to the Priest Presider as they approach for communion asking for a low gluten host. Our second quarter has started at Saint Paul School. November is a busy month for staff and students as we focus on service projects and community ac vi es. Those events that are on our calendar are listed below. Please support our students with your prayers as they grown in their faith by remembering others and our environment. Wednesday, November 1 at 1:30 p.m.: Monthly HaSA Mee ng in the school library. Parents and Grandparents are invited to a end. Friday, November 2: Road Clean Up by the Upper School. Monday, November 13: Deadline for submissions for the JCDA Essay Contest. Thursday, November 16: FAE students will perform for residents at an area nursing home. Saturday, November 25: Students will sing at the New Bern Tree Ligh ng Ceremony. All month: Students will be collec ng canned goods for RCS and the Food Bank. As always, we welcome volunteers and tutors. We need tutors every a ernoon, Monday through Friday, from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. Please consider during the season of gra tude and giving scheduling some me helping our students reach their poten al.
