We feel that this is not the me for joy when there is so much suffering and moral evil. It is interes ng, then, that the first reading is from the prophet Zephaniah, who is almost exclusively concerned with gloomy visions of Judgment Day. Today the Church selects the only op mis c text in Zephaniah, in which the prophet has been touched by the spirit of joy. This, we are assured on all sides, is the season of joy. 4 PASTOR S CORNER Parish Mission: Why every parish should have one once in a while. Father Donnell Kirchner, CSsR The Priest [Magazine] 11/26/2012 Every parish deserves and needs a parish mission once in a while. The renewal, enthusiasm and shot in the arm from this type of event invigorates even the best of communi es. We clerics make our yearly retreat; there is no way that over 60 million Catholics could get away to a retreat house during a 3-to-5-year me frame. The parish mission is what renews their faith, commitment and a achment to the Body of Christ present in their faith community. Let s face it. All machines, whether they be cars, television sets or computers, sooner or later need a checkup or to see a mechanic for a tune up. People are no different. To get someone out of a rut or comfort zone, you need to program something special and out of the ordinary. What makes a parish mission successful, unlike all other spiritual exercises, is its extraordinary preaching that is different from the best of Sunday homilies or other instruc onal courses. By its very nature, a parish mission has in its DNA a conversion mode. There are people who offer good courses on prayer, the liturgy, pastoral involvement or instruc ons about Social Jus ce, but to equate these ac vi es to a parish mission is misleading. Obviously these other services are important elements in a full Chris an life, but a parish mission touches the very core of a Chris an s being, moves his or her heart either to recall (or learn for the first me) how passionate God s love is for each and every one of his sons and daughters, and how far a person can stray from this covenant. In mes past, parish missions were o en seen as a me to scare the hell out of people, pu ng the fear of the Lord into them. Today s modern mission will include eschatological elements, however the main emphasis is centered upon how much the loving Lord desires to encounter and save each one of us. A parish mission is a me of grace, a me for repentance, for change, for becoming a renewed person. The Sacrament of Reconcilia on is an essen al part of a good mission. Maybe the preacher will not be a priest, yet a true mission needs to have confessors available. St. Alphonsus used to say that the thermometer for a successful mission was judged by how many people used the confessional. Without this piece of the plan, any other spoken event is just another happening. I personally have heard many a priest s confession in the rectory, as the good pastor enters into the spirit of a parish mission and realizes that he too needs to set the example for his parishioner. A frui ul parish mission will increase bonding among parishioners. People may not know those in their parish who go to the other Masses. During a mission, the whole parish is doing something together. When there is a social or recep on a erwards (e.g., coffee, cookies, cakes, etc.) people bond, get to know one other. It is easy to bribe the kids by promising them cookies if they get their mom and dad to take them each evening to the mission. They remind the big people that it is me to go. And, at parish mission recep ons, I have seen people talking with their pastor for the first me on a personal level. 5 Third SUNDAY OF ADVENT DECEMBER 16, 2018 Today s Readings: Zephaniah 3:14-18a; Isaiah 12:2-6; Philippians 4:4-7; Luke 3: The people who come to John the Bap st are both stung by his words and a racted by what he is saying. They are self-interested and dishonest, but now seem willing to leave those ways behind and follow Jesus. John assures them that Christ is coming and they are excited. This Third Sunday of Advent is called Gaudete, meaning rejoice and St. Paul tells us why: the Lord is near. Jesus came into the world, and we rejoice that He has saved us by his cross and resurrec on, but we also rejoice because He promises to return and that there will be a new heaven and earth. Ligh ng the rose candle, is a reminder that God is near to you, asking that you turn to Him in an cipa on of our life with Him to come. God of Truth, You help us to see ourselves for who we are in our selfishness and sinfulness. We are stung and le to ask, What should we do? Strengthen us to follow your Great Commandment: to love you, Lord, with all our heart, with all our soul, with all our mind, and all our strength, and our neighbor as ourselves. Save us from your judgment and instead rejoice over us as we rejoice in your great kindness. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. THIS WEEK AT HOME Monday, Dec. 17 Today St. Ma hew gives us Jesus family tree. To fulfill the prophecies, Jesus comes from the line of King David. As His adopted sons and daughters, we share in that lineage and therefore let us pray that we become a priestly people. Tuesday, Dec. 18 Let us hear an account of Jesus birth from Joseph s perspec ve, including his dream in which an angel spoke to him. He listens to the angel and he follows the angel s commands. Reflect on how you listen for God to make his will known to you. Perhaps taking me to be in His presence each day will open you to his will. Wednesday, Dec. 19 Each O An phon gives a tle to Christ, and links him to Isaiah s prophecy and implores him to come! Today we pray, O Flower of Jesse s stem you have been raised up as a sign for all peoples; kings stand silent in your presence; the na ons bow down in worship before you. Come, let nothing keep you from coming to our aid. Thursday, Dec. 20 Luke s account of the Annuncia on tells us that Mary s ini al fear is dispelled by the angel s reassurance. Mary s perfect love of God allows her to accept God s plan for her life. Do your fears hold you back from giving your life totally to Jesus? Friday, Dec. 21 A plan has always existed in the mind of God to bring humankind to the full enjoyment of God. While we await that day, we can enjoy God s presence now. John the Bap st, leapt for joy in his mother s womb in recogni on of Jesus, just as the lover in the Song of Songs leaps across the hills on his way to the beloved. Saturday, Dec. 22 As Mary proclaims the Magnificat, she praises God for his holiness, jus ce and great deeds. Her prayer reveals so much about our God and offers such perfect praise that the Church prays it each day at Evening Prayer. Perhaps we need to pray this prayer daily in imita on of Mary.
