We will need volunteers to help our fellow parishioners - who are not able to participate in parish activities in the areas of transportation, meals, and visits. We ask that you prayerfully consider joining this group to help in this important ministry. If you are interested in Senior Caring Outreach, please call the church office SAINT PAUL FAN CLUB We are collecting and distributing fans to families in our parish who have limited or no air conditioning this summer. We only accept new fans. FYI: Wal Mart is running a special on box fans for $ If you would like to purchase one of these fans, drop it by the church office, we have a list of parishioners that would greatly benefit from this. 3 PASTOR S CORNER Sunday July 17, 2016 Dear Friends at Saint Paul: We continue to suffer by the acuteness and inescapable violence that tortures our society. The Jubilee of Mercy seems to have had wonderful importance within our Church but has not brought a greater sense of mercy to our society. Bishop Burbidge has invited us to prayer to change this: He writes, In light of the recent tragedies in Louisiana, Minnesota, Texas, and others which seem to occur now with far too great a regularity, the Knights of Columbus has launched a new initiative for a National Novena for Peace. As Bishop of Raleigh, I respectfully request you join me and our Diocesan family in this Novena, petitioning our Lord to instill His peace in the hearts of those whose first inclination is to violence toward others. Our parish will begin this weekend to pray the prayer of Peace proposed to us for a novena commencing on Sunday, July 17 at all the weekend Masses and completing on the Feast of Saint James, Monday, July 25. Saint James has urged us that faith in action is visible! Bishop Burbidge continues, At the heart of the Novena is simply the Peace Prayer by Saint Francis of Assisi. Kindly lead your congregation before or after Mass in this prayer for these nine days, (Sunday, July 17 to end on the Feast of Saint James, Monday July 25) and also encourage families to also pray it at home during this same period. Lord, make me an instrument of Your peace; Where there is hatred, let me sow love; Where there is injury, pardon; Where there is error, the truth; Where there is doubt, the faith; Where there is despair, hope; Where there is darkness, light; And where there is sadness, joy. O Divine Master, Grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled, as to console; To be understood, as to understand; To be loved, as to love. For it is in giving that we receive; It is in pardoning that we are pardoned; And it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. Amen. In addition, since many parish and mission communities pray the rosary prior to or following Mass, may I also suggest that you do so seeking the intercession of Mary, Queen of Peace, especially at this critical time in the life of our nation. Encourage families to pray this powerful devotion at home seeking the same intercession. As many communities within our great nation find themselves deeply affected by violence, a lack of respect for the gift of life and the recognition of unity that is ours as God s family, how important it is to contribute prayer as a vital component in the path to peace. In this Jubilee Year dedicated to Our Lord s mercy, may we all be its instruments in every way possible, beginning with our prayer and extending to the conversations needed in our country toward understanding, reconciliation and peace. Fixing up Homes for the Elderly, Disabled and Needy Paint Your Heart Out New Bern along with Neuse River Community Development Corporation has taken the initiative to invite Group Cares, a faith-based, service-learning organization for young people, to help local volunteers fix up homes for elderly, disabled and needy home owners living in New Bern. Volunteers from our area will join Group Cares: Mission New Bern and Paint Your Heart Out New Bern which will be held July 24-30, Imagine being part of a citywide event that connects with local and out-oftown volunteers, serves people in need by having their homes repaired, or stretches our reach into the neighborhoods around us. The best part is there are a variety of ways to get involved. We have had a great response to our first call for help! A good half dozen have offered to help coordinate! There are two basic types of needs: hospitality (food & water) and workers (paint and carpentry, mostly). 5 BISHOP BURBIDGE RESPONDS TO THE MURDER OF DALLAS POLICE OFFICERS In this great country, we turn to the courageous men and women serving in law enforcement to instill peace and uphold justice. That makes today s news that 11 Dallas police officers have been shot, with 5 killed, particularly painful. I ask all Catholics in the Diocese of Raleigh, as well as our brothers and sisters from other faith traditions, to join in prayer for those who have been shot as well as for their family, friends, and fellow officers serving in the line of duty. While tensions may rise within communities for various reasons, violence must never be viewed as a solution. May Our Lord, Jesus Christ, bring peace over our nation and restore communities fractured by violence and hate. Mass and Rosary At 12:15pm on July 8, 2016, Mass was celebrated at Sacred Heart Cathedral, during which victims of the shooting in Dallas were remembered in prayer. Additionally, a Rosary was prayed following Mass for those impacted by the shooting as well as for peace in our country. ATTENTION ALL GARDENERS All Gardeners and wantto-be gardeners are welcome to participate with our local Master Gardeners Thusdays 6-7pm in the Saint Paul School Garden In addition to the typical weeding, watering & fertilizing... we will be harvesting soon.
