Wade Supreme Court decision legalized abor on in the U.S.A. Each year on the first Sunday of October, Catholics across the country observe Respect Life Sunday in order to advance the culture of life in our na on. Incidentally, the month of October is also the month of the rosary! And it is only through the Blessed Virgin Mary s help that our culture will renew its recogni on of the sanc ty of all human life.

2 GOD S WAYS October 1, 2017 Twenty-Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time In the stream of readings during this por on of Ordinary Time, one week s texts can o en appear to pick up exactly where the previous week s concluded. The sen ments expressed in today s first reading seem to be a direct reac on to the Gospel passage we heard last week. In that Gospel, the landowner pays the same wages to his workers whether they worked for a full day or for only a few minutes. Today Ezekiel gives us the lament, The L s way is not fair! (Ezekiel 18:25). These Sundays in Ordinary Time offer us a glimpse into the ways of the Lord. We see how God s way has the tendency to turn the accepted conven ons of the day upside down. Those who always expected that their way to heaven was guaranteed are disappointed. Those who thought they never had a chance are given that chance. Today, offers us another opportunity to discover the abundance of God s mercy and love. TODAY S READINGS First Reading When the wicked turn away from their wickedness they have commi ed and do what is right, they shall surely live (Ezekiel 18:25-28). Psalm Remember your mercies, O Lord (Psalm 25). Second Reading Consider others as be er than yourselves; look not to your own interests, but to the interests of others (Philippians 2:1-11 [1-5]). 5 October 1, 2017 Dear Friends at Saint Paul: There have been many comments recently about the length of sermons. I want to assure everyone that there is no new policy but we do have a great many things to cover to be sure that all are able to be on board! Fr Michael's sermon on Confession was a complete review of the teaching of the Church and the prac cal necessi es of helping people to go to Confession. It has been my experience that falling out of the habit usually means that one doesn't know how to return to the habit. One person commented, It was just a review of the Bal more Catechism, which I learned 70 years ago. That's right... but if you are 50 or 40 or 30, you didn't have the Bal more Catechism in most parishes. This informa on can be given piecemeal or whole. I think that giving it whole once is a great idea. I trust that there are some who will use the handout for the Examina on of Conscience and the availability of the Sacrament at Saint Paul to return to its prac ce. That would be a great grace. I want to thank the many people who gave suppor ve, interested reac ons... o en followed by but not so long, Father! We hear you! EME / LECTOR SCHEDULE 10/7: 5PM - Team #1(3) 10/8: 8AM - Team #2 / 11AM - Team #1 Highlights from your Pastoral Council * Cynthia White, from the Finance Council, summarized 2017 as a very good year for both the school and the parish. * Dick Dodson reported that last year s Gala resulted in a $37K profit. Mee ngs by the Spring 2018 Gala commi ee have started. The event will be held at the FLC on 1/27/2018. * The Ministry Fair will be January 6 and 7, 2018 in the FLC. There are many different volunteer experiences that need to be sorted out, and a follow-up commi ee is cri cal. * Father Tully talked about the priority of spiritual recrui ng for the liturgical ministries (ushers, readers and Eucharis c ministers) which will be conducted in October. He would like these groups to have three teams of nine people each in order to create a richer pool of volunteers. A retreat for these groups will be held 11/5/2017 from 2:30 to 5 PM. * The work on the Pictorial Directory for Spring 2018 will begin a er the Ministry Fair. Family photos will run from 2/10 3/20 and will be a major undertaking requiring many volunteers. * A goal to have Masses celebrated in various neighborhoods throughout the parish during Lent was discussed. Loca ons need to be iden fied (country clubs and/or neighborhoods) as well as volunteers to coordinate refreshments and name tags. Fr. Tully and Fr. Mike hope to do around 15 Masses this year, and all Masses would be in the evening. First Pastoral Council Meeting
