2 November 5, 2017 THE GREATEST AMONG US Thirty First Sunday in Ordinary Time Whom do you admire? Is it the President the United States or a movie star or a billionaire? These are people whom the world exalts as great. Like the Pharisees in today s Gospel, they have places of honor wherever they go. Would you like to follow in their footsteps? The scriptures for today offer different examples for us to follow. Jesus tells us that the greatest among us are the servants. These are the people we are to honor and imitate. We are called to be like Paul, who worked hard to serve the needs of his communi es, and Jesus, who gave his life in service to the world. TODAY S READINGS First Reading Do we not have one father? Did not the one God create us? (Malachi 1:14b 2:2b, 8-10). Psalm In you, Lord, I have found my peace (Psalm 131). Second Reading You have received not a human word but the word of God (1 Thessalonians 2:7b-9, 13). Gospel Call no one your father on earth; you have but one Father, the one in heaven (Ma hew 23:1-12). GOD S WORD FOR CHILDREN LESSON IN HUMILITY - Ma hew 23:12 READINGS FOR THE WEEK Monday: Rom 11:29-36; Ps 69:30-36; Lk 14:12-14 Tuesday: Rom 12:5-16b; Ps 131:1b-3; Lk 14:15-24 Wednesday: Rom 13:8-10; Ps 112:1b-9; Lk 14:25-33 Thursday: Ez 47:1-12; Ps 46:2-9; 1 Cor 3:9-17; Jn 2:13-22 Friday: Rom 15:14-21; Ps 98:1-4; Lk 16:1-8 Saturday: Rom 16:3-27; Ps 145:2-11; Lk 16:9-15 SAINTS AND SPECIAL OBSERVANCES Sunday: Na onal Voca on Awareness Week; Daylight Saving Time ends Tuesday: Elec on Day Thursday: The Dedica on of the Lateran Basilica Friday: St. Leo the Great Saturday: St. Mar n of Tours; Veterans Day SAINT OF THE WEEK ~ SAINT MARTIN OF TOURS A conscien ous objector who wanted to be a monk; a monk who was maneuvered into being a bishop; a bishop who fought paganism as well as pleaded for mercy to here cs such was Mar n of Tours, one of the most popular of saints and one of the first not to be a martyr. Born of pagan parents and raised in Italy, Saint Mar n of Tours was forced at the age of 15 to serve in the army. A er great difficul es, he was discharged. Saint Mar n was ordained an exorcist and worked with great zeal against the Arians. He returned to France and established what may have been the first French monastery. The people of Tours demanded that he become their bishop. BOUNTIFUL TREE Many of you are familiar with the Angel Tree (or Giving Tree) and the blessing it is to others. Once again, we are introducing this wonderful program as part of our Thanksgiving and are calling it the Christmas Boun ful Tree. We have reached out to local grade school counselors in an effort to care for all families in need. The schools see these children daily and have been a great help with nomina ng families that could really use a hand. Each ornament will list one gi request, under $35. There will also be cash or gi card ornaments for those who prefer to have us do the shopping. Gi s should be wrapped, with the ornament a ached on the outside, for iden fica on purposes, and be returned to Saint Paul by November 26th. The schools will then assist with distribu ng the gi s to the families which they nominated. We are very excited about the impact of this program, bringing blessings to the families, but also to you who choose to par cipate. So as the temperature drops, start your holiday season by warming your heart and the heart of others through giving with the Christmas Boun ful Tree. 5 November 5, 2017 Dear Friends at Saint Paul: A er many ques ons from the Render to Caesar sermon from two weeks ago, I am reprin ng here the Seven Pillars of Catholic Social Teaching. More informa on is available at our Bishop s website: usccb.org. Themes of Catholic Social Teaching The Church's social teaching is a rich treasure of wisdom about building a just society and living lives of holiness amidst the challenges of modern society. Modern Catholic social teaching has been ar culated through a tradi on of papal, conciliar, and episcopal documents. The depth and richness of this tradi on can be understood best through a direct reading of these documents. In these brief reflec ons, we highlight several of the key themes that are at the heart of our Catholic social tradi on. Life and Dignity of the Human Person The Catholic Church proclaims that human life is sacred and that the dignity of the human person is the founda on of a moral vision for society. This belief is the founda on of all the principles of our social teaching. In our society, human life is under direct a ack from abor on and euthanasia. The value of human life is being threatened by cloning, embryonic stem cell research, and the use of the death penalty. The inten onal targe ng of civilians in war or terrorist a acks is always wrong. Catholic teaching also calls on us to work to avoid war. Na ons must protect the right to life by finding increasingly effec ve ways to prevent conflicts and resolve them by peaceful means. We believe that every person is precious, that people are more important than things, and that the measure of every ins tu on is whether it threatens or enhances the life and dignity of the human person. Call to Family, Community, and Par cipa on The person is not only sacred but also social. How we organize our society -- in economics and poli cs, in law and policy -- directly affects human dignity and the capacity of individuals to grow in community. Marriage and the family are the central social ins tu ons that must be supported and strengthened, not undermined. We believe people have a right and a duty to par cipate in society, seeking together the common good and well-being of all, especially the poor and vulnerable. Rights and Responsibili es The Catholic tradi on teaches that human dignity can be protected and a healthy community can be achieved only if human rights are protected and responsibili es are met. Therefore, every person has a fundamental right to life and a right to those things required for human decency. Corresponding to these rights are du es and responsibili es-- to one another, to our families, and to the larger society. Op on for the Poor and Vulnerable A basic moral test is how our most vulnerable members are faring. In a society marred by deepening divisions between rich and poor, our tradi on recalls the story of the Last Judgment (Mt 25:31-46) and instructs us to put the needs of the poor and vulnerable first. The Dignity of Work and the Rights of Workers The economy must serve people, not the other way around. Work is more than a way to make a living; it is a form of con nuing par cipa on in Gods crea on. If the dignity of work is to be protected, then the basic rights of workers must be respected--the right to produc ve work, to decent and fair wages, to the organiza on and joining of unions, to private property, and to economic ini a ve. Solidarity We are one human family whatever our na onal, racial, ethnic, economic, and ideological differences. We are our brothers and sisters keepers, wherever they may be. Loving our neighbor has global dimensions in a shrinking world. At the core of the virtue of solidarity is the pursuit of jus ce and peace. Pope Paul VI taught that if you want peace, work for jus ce. The Gospel calls us to be peacemakers. Our love for all our sisters and brothers demands that we promote peace in a world surrounded by violence and conflict. Care for God's Crea on We show our respect for the Creator by our stewardship of crea on. Care for the earth is not just an Earth Day slogan, it is a requirement of our faith. We are called to protect people and the planet, living our faith in rela onship with all of God s crea on. This environmental challenge has fundamental moral and ethical dimensions that cannot be ignored. This summary should only be a star ng point for those interested in Catholic social teaching. A full understanding can only be achieved by reading the papal, conciliar, and episcopal documents that make up this rich tradi on.
