2 WORD OF THE LORD HOME IS WHERE THE FAMILY IS The idea, dream, and reality of family is so strong and durable that we use it to describe all that is best about human gatherings. We speak of the family of na ons, of our church and parish families. The greatest compliment we can pay a friend or gracious host is to say that we feel at home with them, we feel part of the family. Families are the first crucibles in which love is tested and tempered. Jesus himself was one of three people who lived in the shadow of each other. These three amateurs were on holiday, and one of them got lost. Two were worried sick and took great measures to find the third, a boy a er all, who was seeking the meaning of his calling. She was determined to help those in need for the love of Jesus and for the sake of the Gospel. Henrie e was also a person who suffered as she made her way through life, bearing crosses. She taught us that sanc ty can be a ained in following the path of Jesus. It was in this manner that she dealt with her troubles and major obstacles to achieve her goals. Some of the troubles Henrie e met were the resistance of the ruling popula on to the idea of a black religious congrega on; the lack of finances to do the work; the taunts and disbelief of people in her mission; the lack of support from both the Church and civil authority; and poor health. However, Henrie e prac ced heroic virtue. She had faith, lived in hope and love. She was compassionate, forgiving, and merciful. She believed in jus ce and was not afraid to do what was right in the eyes of God. God blessed her efforts. And in 1842, she founded the Congrega on of the Sisters of the Holy Family. Henrie e died November 17, Her funeral was held at St. Augus ne Church. Her obituary states,... 5 Saint Paul Parish Mission 2019 Fr. Ian Bordenave, O.P., is an i nerant preacher. He is working on a Doctor of Ministry in Preaching through Aquinas Ins tute of Theology. He is the prior of St. Albert the Great Priory in Irving, Texas. He previously served as an assistant rector of the Church of the Incarna on at the University of Dallas from 2015 to 2017, the pastor of Holy Rosary Parish in Houston from 2009 to 2015, the dean of the Inner-City Deanery of the Archdiocese of New Orleans from 2007 to 2009, the pastor of St. Anthony of Padua Parish in New Orleans from 2002 to 2009, and a parochial vicar at St. Dominic Parish in New Orleans from 2000 to He has been a professed member of the Order of Preachers (Dominicans) since 1994 and a priest since Before joining the Order, he served as a Patriot Missile Officer in the U.S. Army from 1988 to He holds a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from the University of Dayton, and the Master of Arts in Theology and a Master of Divinity from Aquinas Ins tute of Theology. He is from Valparaiso, Florida. He enjoys reading and running. How do we prepare for a Parish Mission? The most important part is prayer, asking God to bring the grace and empowerment that never could come from us. Pray for yourself and for your loved ones. Pray for the people that you sit near at Mass or neighbors that you know who go here to Saint Paul. Pray especially for the Retreat Director, Father Ian, O.P., whose introduc on and biography are presented above. The Parish Mission is also a me to recover lost fervor or reclaim our lost sheep... pray for returning members of the parish! It is prayer that will move mountains of apathy, discontent, or disaffec on. The love of Jesus can counteract all the bad publicity the Church has suffered. The power of the Holy Spirit can draw together those who are enamored with the world and help them to assess the priori es of their lives. It is the care of our Good Shepherd whose birth we celebrate at Christmas who can heal the divisions and scars of the past. This will only happen if we pray for it... God makes us a part of the seed-work of grace so that we can know for certain that the harvest is His doing! Does God need us to pray? Of course not... but God wants us to pray because the salva on of our parish and of every parishioner is a coopera ve effort. We have to imagine salva on to ever have hope of it. We have to pray for conversion to ever recognize when it comes. We have to direct our hope in dependence on God to come to a point where he is all in all, for us and one another. A Parish Mission is successful because God makes it so! There is no doubt about it. How does God make it so? By working in us and our fellow parishioners to encourage each other in faithful love and united prayer. My mother used to say: Let's storm Heaven with our prayer, because God wants us to succeed. Begin today: Lord, empower Saint Paul parish in its Parish Mission by calling every parishioner to love you more. Amen!
