2 WORD OF THE LORD PREPARE THE PROMISE OF JUSTICE We are in fairly good company when we ask God for jus ce. O en enough we hear and agree with the lament of the people of Israel asking God why the wicked prosper. However, when we call out for jus ce, we usually want someone to get his or her comeuppance. God s jus ce is something other than this, of course. God s jus ce comprises a wonderful rightness between God and humankind. Today, Jeremiah looks ahead to a me when a just one will sprout from the shorn-off stump of Jesse of the house and family of David. Life was not fair in Jeremiah s me. Israel s kings held the promise of God s fidelity, but it was difficult to see how God s promise could be realized through them. Nevertheless, Jeremiah li s his voice and announces that the Promised One will come. Luke s Gospel echoes that announcement, and Paul is filled with sturdy encouragement. The discussion will focus on God s great plan for us in Christ Jesus, especially God s desire to help us and to heal us in the face of life s o en great difficul es. He will also address the nature of the spiritual journey as we await our own resurrec on and herea er. And finally, rooted in a deeper understanding of the journey and God s great plan, we ll be able to get the most out of our Advent journey and experience with even deeper apprecia on of the joy of Christmas! Tickets are $5 per person. Kids 10 and under are free. A meal and refreshments will be served and entertainment provided. Santa will be there with presents for all the children. Keeping Christ in Christmas Christmas Card Sales The Knights of Columbus will be selling an assortment of beau ful Christmas cards to support Keeping Christ in Christmas. Cards will be on sale in the Atrium a er all Masses this weekend. This is the final weekend that cards will be on sale. The Knights of Columbus Assembly 1820 wants to thank the parishioners of Saint Paul for their generosity during the Wounded Warriors Collec ons on Nov 10 & 11. A total of $1,697 was collected a er three masses; a total which eclipsed the collec ons in prior years which will provide holiday travel funds for veterans during the next six weeks. We thank you for your generosity and support of this very worthy cause. On November 11th, our Prison Ministry visited 14 gentlemen and had vibrant discussions on the readings. We related stories of giving, as did the two women in both 1st Kings, and Mark's Gospel from Chapter 12. These men have forfeited much, including their freedom, by being incarcerated. Their involvement and discussions were honest and Holy. It is wonderful that even there, in that place of correc ons they see "the light of Christ". One comment from a prisoner was "I didn't know how much I needed Jesus, un l Jesus was all I had le ". Please remember these men in your prayers, especially during this Thanksgiving, as they are "put away" from us and their families. If you could, reflect on what we have, and possibly discern about joining us if the Spirit move you! Please pray for those who are sick, shut-in, or recovering from surgery, and their caregivers.

` THE ROAD TO SAINTHOOD Fr. Augustus Tolton (1854-1897) Fr. Augustus Tolton was the first Roman Catholic priest in the United States publicly known to be black when he was ordained in 1886.

Tolton led the development and construc on of St. Monica Catholic Church as a black Na onal Parish Church, completed in 1893.

4 ` THE ROAD TO SAINTHOOD Fr. Augustus Tolton ( ) Fr. Augustus Tolton was the first Roman Catholic priest in the United States publicly known to be black when he was ordained in A former slave who was bap zed and reared Catholic, Tolton studied formally in Rome. He was ordained in Rome on Easter Sunday at the Cathedral Archbasilica of St. John Lateran. Fr. Tolton led the development and construc on of St. Monica Catholic Church as a black Na onal Parish Church, completed in Tolton s success at ministering to black Catholics quickly earned him na onal a en on within the Catholic hierarchy. He is the subject of the 1973 biography from Slave to Priest by Sister Caroline Hemesath. Julia Greeley (d1918) Julia Greeley was born into slavery, in Hannibal, Missouri, some me between 1833 and Freed by Missouri's Emancipa on Act in 1865, Julia subsequently earned her keep by serving white families in Missouri, Colorado, Wyoming and New Mexico though mostly in the Denver area. Julia entered the Catholic Church at Sacred Heart Parish in Denver in 1880, and was an outstanding supporter of all that the parish had to offer. The Jesuits who ran the parish considered her the most enthusias c promoter of devo on to the Sacred Heart of Jesus they had ever seen. Every month she visited on foot every fire sta on in Denver and delivered literature of the Sacred Heart League to the firemen, Catholics and non-catholics alike. A daily communicant, Julia had a rich devo on to the Blessed Sacrament and the Blessed Virgin and con nued her prayers while working and moving about. She joined the Secular Franciscan Order in 1901 and was ac ve in it ll her death in As part of the Cause for Canoniza on, Julia's mortal remains were transferred to Denver's Cathedral Basilica of the Immaculate Concep on on June 7, h p:// on/cultural-diversity/africanamerican/resources/on-the-road-to-sainthood-leaders-of-africandescent.cfm PASTORAL COUNCIL NEWS Highlights from 11/2018 Pastoral Council Mee ng * Es mated damages and costs to repair the church campus (not including OSP) will total at least $600K. The challenge is we need those with exper se to coordinate the recovery process in order to manage the flow of informa on between insurance adjustors and contractors. * The school is now fully opera onal a er the storm. Curriculum is behind a few weeks and adjustments are being made to catch up on all ac vi es. * School enrollment is now at 132, but the budget was based on 154. School has plans to seek out grants for new sources of revenue. * Father Rob is working to coordinate a be er sacramental process for the La no community in an effort to get be er outreach and more par cipa on. * Deacon Jim is planning on developing a disaster recovery plan for St. Paul and is using St. Peter s in Oriental as a guide. * A church in Houston, Texas sent us ninety $250 Lowe s Gi cards a er the hurricane which were ed to Catholic Chari es case management for vic ms. * The Spanish-speaking Red Cross has been able to meet with 54 families that could not be helped through FEMA recovery. * We will need another plan for psychological help as it relates to grief and anniversaries of the hurricane event in the future. * Several recommenda ons were presented for the four primary parish objec ves: * Parish Campus dra recommenda ons submi ed with plan to be developed * Technology dra recommenda ons submi ed with plan to be developed * Religious Educa on: There has been no growth in budget allocated for several years and fees are generated from tui on primarily to cover books. We need more teachers and assistants and more funding. * Youth Ministry: We need to look at the current structure and discuss long-range issues of where we want to be in five years. Confirma on Prepara on is structured but we currently lack other structured ministry. We need to bring leaders together with Father Tully and members of Pastoral Council to work on this important issue.

5 FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT DECEMBER 2, 2018 Today s Readings: Jeremiah 33:14-16; 1 Thessalonians 3:12-4:2; Luke 21:25-28, Many good things require wai ng and planning: a wedding celebra on, the birth or adop on of a baby, running a marathon. For such events, we have to pay much a en on and focus on the prepara ons, even while the obliga ons of daily life con nue. This focused prepara on is needed to have a good Advent. Preparing for Advent is not hard work; it is a work of the heart. There are many ways to prepare our hearts a ending daily Mass, reading and reflec ng on each day s readings, praying morning and evening prayer, praying the Rosary, and medita ng in silence for fi een minutes each day. The work of the heart we choose keeps our eyes fixed on the miracle that in God s plan, he spoke his Word and the Word became flesh and dwelt among us. Jesus is the Word expressed in flesh and blood, to allow us to draw closer to the God of infinite mystery. Jesus gives his very flesh and blood to us once in history on Calvary, and for all me in the Eucharist. While we await the Lord s return, we have good reason to stand erect and raise our heads as today s Gospel counsels. We cannot become too fa gued or too anxious to remember that our redemp on is at hand. God of Jus ce, You surprise us with your choices of the smallest na on to bless the world. A shepherd boy to be their king. and a baby born in a stable to be the King of Kings. Give us a heart like yours that loves the least among us and values them as the greatest. Teach us your jus ce that will always forgive and bring forth life from death. We make our prayer through Jesus, the long awaited Messiah, the fulfillment of the promise from all ages. Amen. This week Monday, Dec. 3, 2018 In the gospel, Jesus meets a Roman centurion whose faith amazes him compared to the many children of the kingdom. Ask yourself, is your faith weak of strong. Use this Advent to strengthen the weaknesses and bolster up the strengths. Isaiah 2:1-5; Psalm 1222:1-9; Ma hew 8:5-ll. Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2018 Isaiah speaks of a me when the earth will be filled with knowledge of the Lord, and there will be peace among na ons. These events are fulfilled in the coming of Jesus Christ. When we receive Jesus into our body in the Eucharist and listen to his Word, we are blessed with the foretaste of the me when we will know him fully. Isaiah 11:1-10; Psalm 72:1-2,7-8,12-13, 17: Luke 10: Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2018 In Ma hew s Godpe, Jesus Feeds more than four thousand people and heals all who are sick. Surely, God is making himself known in their midst! When we prepare food for others or take care of them when they are sick, are we aware that we are making God known? Isaiah 25:6-10a; Psalm 23:1-6; Ma hew 15: Thursday, Dec. 6, 2018 Isaiah says that peace will reign when we fully trust God. St. Nicholas is remembered for his generosity to the poor and the secrecy of his good deeds. He heard the words of Jesus and acted on them. Isaiah 26:1-6; Psalm 118:1 & 8-9, 19-21,25-27a; Ma hew 7:21, Friday, Dec. 7, 2018 In the fourth century, St. Ambrose was loved best for his first act as bishop: selling all he had and giving to the poor. During this Advent, let us ask Jesus to remove our blindness to our sins, open our lips to tell others about him and open our hearts to care for the poor among us.
