2 THE SHEPHERD'S FLOCK In Christian art, the earliest depictions of Jesus Christ were not of his crucifixion or of his resurrection. The first known renderings of Jesus show him as the Good Shepherd, the image put before us in today's readings. In the Gospel passage Jesus reveals that he is the shepherd and his followers are his "flock." In the first and second readings, we are told more about the flock. The passage from Acts assures us that both Jews and Gentiles are called to follow Jesus. It is faith, not birthright, that makes us part of the company of believers. In the passage from the book of Revelation we learn that the flock that follows this Lamb of God will also be washed in his blood. They will endure a time of trial before they enjoy eternal life. Be assured of the promise, we are told, but know there is a price to be paid. TODAY'S READINGS First Reading -- The Jews angrily reject Paul and Barnabas' preaching. They then turn their energies to the Gentiles (Acts 13:14, 43-52). Psalm -- We are his people, the sheep of his flock (Psalm 100). Second Reading -- John envisions a great white-robed multitude standing before the throne and before the Lamb. (Revelation 7:9, 14b-17). Gospel -- My sheep hear my voice; they follow me. I give them eternal life (John 10:27-30). READINGS FOR THE WEEK Monday: Acts 11:1-18; Ps 42:2-3; 43:3, 4; Jn 10:11-18 Tuesday: Acts 11:19-26; Ps 87:1b-7; Jn 10:22-30 Wednesday: Acts 12: :5a; Ps 67:2-3, 5-6, 8; Jn 12:44-50 Thursday: Acts 13:13-25; Ps 89:2-3, 21-22, 25, 27; Jn 13:16-20 Friday: Acts 13:26-33; Ps 2:6-11ab; Jn 14:1-6 Saturday: Acts 13:44-52; Ps 98:1-4; Jn 14:7-14 EASTERN PREGNACY INFORMATION CLINIC (EPIC) CELEBRATE LIFE BANQUET April 25th - Grace Fellowship Church (Kinston) at 6:30pm April 26th - Saint Paul Catholic Church at 6:30pm For more information, call or CALL for EUCHARISTIC MINISTERS The Eucharist is the source of holiness and spiritual nourishment for our mission in the world. 3 PASTOR S CORNER Sunday April 17, 2016 Dear Friends at Saint Paul: Corporal Works of Mercy at Saint Paul We are just beginning to form an interest group and what may become an active ministry and you can influence the outcome. Here's the question: how does an elderly person in our parish find out how to tap resources for practical help: around the house, in the yard, getting to the doctor, support in emergencies...? We used to have a group called low flying angels who could swoop in and help out. We have learned that there are many more helpers out there but not a great way to connect to them. Sometimes, it's a matter of just finding out who can help. The first step to helping the elderly with daily and practical needs, as well as connecting them with more professional resources, will be a current list of helpers matched with a current list of needs. Let's find out what the needs are and let's find volunteers to research how those needs can be met. Mary Pickhaver is willing to spearhead the effort and is collecting your input to answer the question: how do the elderly get connected with those who can help with their needs? Are you aware of needs that are difficult to meet? Are you aware of resources that are underused or not well publicized? Have you found resources for help that you want to compliment and pass on? You can send an to me (pastor@spccnb.org) or to Mary Pickhaver (mlpick2@gmail.com). Thanks for giving this some thought and prayer: what do you need as an elderly person and what resources do you know and trust? You may have seen in recent bulletins news from our Prison Ministries. They are focused on two weekly events: Sunday afternoon at Pamlico Correctional Facility in Bayboro (men) and Monday evening at Craven County Detention Center in Clarks (women). There are many facets of these ministries we will consider in the fture. Here, I am asking you to focus on just one piece: prayer partner... Would you be willing to make a formal (or an informal) commitment to pray on Sunday at 2:00 pm or Monday at 7:30 pm when our parish ministers are entering these two prisons for the weekly meeting with the inmates? There will be invitations to all the different aspects of these prison ministries in the near future in the bulletin, like the Dismas Union of Prayer, or the possibility of adding a men's visitation on Monday evenings, or another Sunday afternoon visitor, or letter writing or... well... there are many wonderful things to do where you could help. Through regular updates in our bulletin, you will also get the chance to know more about the wonderful faithfulness of our Prison ministers who do this visitation with courage and sensitivity. Right now, a commitment to pray on Sunday at 2pm and Monday at 7:30pm, spiritually joining those who are passing through the gates and having the door slam and lock behind them, in order to support the faith of incarcerated brothers and sisters. If you are going to make this promise for prayer, send us an (dismashelp@spccnb.org) and let us know. It will forward to the Prison Ministers and it will be a great encouragement to them. Thank you. 4 SPECIAL PARISH & COMMUNITY EVENTS Visit St. Joseph s Mission For the Colored Rev. Julian Endler, Passionist 53 Bern St. New Bern, North Carolina New Bern is on Route 17 - Just halfway between New York and Florida THE HISTORY OF SAINT JOSEPH CATHOLIC SCHOOL AND CHURCH Friday April 22, :00 PM Tryon Palace Waystation Auditorium 610 Pollock Street (Across from Tryon Palace Main Gate) Speakers: Monsignor Gerald Lewis Archivist Diocese of Raleigh Former Saint Paul Catholic Church Administrator Former Judge Gaston House Preservation Association Current Member Emeritus Tryon Palace Commission Topic: My Father s Business Deacon Frederick M. Rick Fisher Jr. Deacon: Saint Paul Catholic Church Alumnus of Saint Joseph & Saint Paul Elementary Schools & William Gaston Catholic High School Topic: A Local, Experiential & Personal Perspective Saint Paul Catholic School 2016 Distinguished Alumni Award Call for Nominations As we celebrate the eleventh year of awarding the Joseph Rachid Alumni Award in Honor of Distinguished Graduates of St. Paul and St. Joseph Catholic Schools, we invite nominations at this time for Our goal is to recognize outstanding graduates. Our Parish history shows that with the opening of St. Joseph School in 1887, and later the establishment of St. Paul School there has been a dynamic continuance of Catholic education for children in New Bern over the past 129 years. A highlight of the annual Eighth Grade Graduation celebration is the beautiful Mass after which the Distinguished Alumni Award is presented. Each year many former award recipients join the graduates and their families on this joyful and special occasion. This year we have expanded the scope to include nominees who have graduated by the year Inductees may be nominated or self-nominated. Applications are available in the Church Atrium after all the Masses as well as in the school office. All completed applications must be received by Monday, May 16, We look forward to your participation in this special project as we continue to celebrate the life-long values of a strong, service oriented Catholic education here at St. Paul Catholic School. TOWN MEETING On May 15, 2016, at 3 pm in the Church, we invite you to a TOWN MEETING! This one hour meeting will be a chance for parishioners to chat about "Life at Saint Paul" and to share opinions and impressions of the parish from our individual and unique viewpoints. We really hope that you will be there to participate and stay informed. There may be something you will learn there may be something that you will contribute that others need to hear. A town meeting is an unusual forum in parish life, but is a way to develop a discernment of how the Lord may be leading us and where we need to go in the future. There will be a presentation of the "Parish Plan" which is a required annual report sent to the Bishop by June 30th of each year. The Pastoral Council has the primary responsibility for the formation of the Parish Plan. The Town Meeting will be your opportunity to learn about the Parish Plan, influence it in draft form and prepare for the future of our parish life. Mommy, are we there yet? Not yet! We are at 97% of our goal! A handful of families are still making their commitment to the Bishop's Annual Appeal... Thank you very much if you have already pledged/paid a gift for this year's annual appeal! Thanks to those who pledged/gave this past week. We are within a few percentage points of achieving the goal as a MINIMUM cooperative success for all the ministries supported by the goal. We will not pause in our efforts for the "BAA" until that minimum threshold is reached. The ministries dependent on your gift to the BAA are worth the wait... we are almost there! Thank you for making every effort to get in your pledge or payment this week.

Come view this film on Sunday, April 24th in the Chapel at 2:30 p.m. CHAPLET OF DIVINE MERCY Luke 8; In this parable of Jesus, the seed (word of God) can fall on thorns or rocky soil. For a seed to grow the soil must be prepared and the seed tended. This is the message Jesus has for us! We must be prepared to receive the word and create good soil for it. Once we hear it, we can create conditions for it to take root so we can make it our own. Hearing the word of God is the beginning of our growing closer to God. Lord, grant me the grace to hear, tend, and embrace, as my own, the word you sow in me. (4 Minute Retreat).
