Gra tude is the Threshold of Joy! I rejoice in your prayerful and coopera ve support. Thank you. Today begins our Advent season, which I hesitate to call the season preparing for Christmas because it is hard for us to maintain a real Advent when the goal, Christmas, requires so much effort. Advent is its own season... wai ng, mo onless, free, yearning, expectant. Advent calls us to receive Christ with open hearts for today, even as we bring to mind that first coming in the manger at Bethlehem. These next few weeks, we must not stuff ourselves with stuff, but rather, empty ourselves to find room for Christ. Advent is not history repea ng itself but it is our present day experience being elevated to a longing for Christ's presence in our world. We have a Savior and s ll we are wai ng for Salva on Fulfillment Sa sfac on Comple on. We cry out to God for all that is NOT in our world, all that we do NOT see: jus ce, peace, stability, happiness... Please take some me not for wan ng but for prayerful longing. Par cipate in the Penance Services (Dec 1 st, Dec 13 th ) or in Confessions (, 10:45, 3:30). Come on evenings for Deacon Mahoney's Advent Reflec ons. Come to Mass during the week. 5 FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT, November 27, 2016 Come, Let Us Walk in the Light of the Lord! Today s Readings: Isaiah 2:1-5; Psalm 122:1-9; Romans 13:11-14; Ma hew 24: The day of salva on is near, and the darkness does not need to govern our lives. The readings on the First of Advent call us to be alert. They urge us to shake off our drowsiness, find a way through the darkness, and follow the light. In the first reading, we are called to stream together to the house of the Lord, lay down our weapons of destruc on and live in the light of God s Kingdom. As we begin Advent, we can take the first step in our homes by se ng up an Advent prayer area with purple cloth and an Advent Wreath. The purple is the dark background in which the growing light through the season reminds us to move forward together to establish God s Kingdom of peace. All of today s readings summon us to wake up and to discard the darkness and turn it into a life-giving light. St. Paul tells us that the darkness is brought about by our conduct. We need to put on Christ by clothing ourselves in conduct guided by the Lord and wear the light of Christ as armor. In this dark season of the year, when daylight hours are never enough, don t let the darkness and the night be your guide. Follow Christ s emerging light through this season! Light of All Being Creator God, Author of all life and light, In this season of anticipation you call us to recognize your light in our midst, your love in our Darkness. Lead us from the darkness of despair into a light of hope and peace. Wake us from the shadows of our troubled lives into a light that dispels our fears and concerns. May your presence maintain our wakefulness, as we prepare for your coming more deeply into our hearts. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns in the unity of the Holy Spirit, One God forever and ever. Amen THIS WEEK AT HOME, Nov. 28 Isaiah 4:2-6; Psalm 122:1-9, Ma hew 8:5-11. Each meal as a family, and each community gathering for Eucharist is a reminder of the Kingdom of God. As you light your Advent candle, name your hopes and promises for each member of your family., Nov. 29 Isaiah 11:1-10; Psalm 72:1-2, 7-8, 12-13, 17; Luke 10: Advent is about looking forward to the coming of the Messiah in peace. This season is our opportunity to work on a rela onship of peace with an unlikely person. Pray for guidance to succeed., Nov. 30 Romans 10:9-18; Psalm 231-6; Ma hew4: St. Andrew gives us an example of proclaiming the good news. Our challenge in this Advent season is to not just proclaim Good News but to share it with others in the spirit of the season., Dec. 1 Isaiah 26:1-6; Psalm 118:1-9,19-27a; Ma hew 7: Jesus calls us to listen to his words and discern the proper me to help others in need. Do this for others by reaching out to those who are not part of your daily circle of family and friends., Dec. 2 Isaiah 29:17-24; Psalm 27:1-4, 13-14; Ma hew 9: The season of Advent invites us to seek Jesus with hearts wide open and full of faith. Take me to pause and focus on those who need cheering up and a comfor ng work of faith and friendship., Dec. 3 Isaih 30:19-26; Psalm 147:1-6; Ma hew 9:35-10:1-8. St. Francis Xavier is a great example of a person who s life s focus was zeal for the Faith. Pray the Lord s Prayer and remember we are invited to His Kingdom on earth as it is in heaven.
