1 Ascension of the Lord May 23rd & 24th, 2009 Office FRIDAYS AS DAYS OF ABSTINENCE: Please remember the Bishop s call to abstain from eating meat on all Fridays as prayer and witness for human life. Abstinence itself can be offered consciously as a prayer for life and in reparation for sins against life. We must continue to teach the truth about life without ceasing and without hesitancy. But actions speak louder than words. Abstinence from meat on Fridays, for the sake of life, is one such action, especially when done in solidarity with one another. "Steubenville City Choir News: In addition to the ordination Mass of May 30th the Choir also was asked to sing for the Catholic Central Baccalaureate on Tuesday, May 26. The schedule is as follows: Tue 5/26, 6:15 pm arrive at Holy Name Sat 5/30, 9:00 am arrive at Holy Name for Ordinations CONFESSIONS CANCELLED: Don t panic it isn t forever but Fr. Mark and I plan to attend the Ordination Mass on Saturday, May 30 th at Holy Name Cathedral. Since this Mass is at the time we normally have confessions, we will be cancelling them that day. 2 CONGRATULATIONS: (CCC 1601) The matrimonial covenant, by which a man and a woman establish between themselves a partnership of the whole of life, is by its nature ordered toward the good of the spouses and the procreation and education of offspring; this covenant between baptized persons has been raised by Christ the Lord to the dignity of a sacrament. May the Lord continue to bless them and watch over them. CONGRATULATIONS: (CCC 1227) According to the Apostle Paul, the believer enters through Baptism into communion with Christ s death, is buried with him, and rises with him..the baptized have put on Christ. Through the Holy Spirit, Baptism is a bath that purifies, justifies, and sanctifies. THE ASCENSION OF THE LORD: This Solemnity has been transferred from Ascension Thursday to the Vigil and Sunday Masses this weekend of May 23, 24 th. This has been done in most provinces in the United States and is true for our diocese. As we celebrate the Ascension we will recall that Jesus commissioned his disciples to baptize in His name, reminding them that He is always present through the Spirit. Ascending to the Father, He promises that he would send the Advocate. We will celebrate the outpouring of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles on May 30 & 31 st The Solemnity of Pentecost. In preparation for this celebration you are invited to pray the Novena to the Holy Spirit which is a bulletin insert for this weekend. (Yes, we are late in presenting this.) I am sure that the Lord doesn t count days when He is listening to our prayers He sees our hearts. ~Fr. Nau 2 Vocations Camp: This summer the office of Vocations is sponsoring a Summer Vocation Camp from Sunday, July 26 at 5:00pm until Wednesday, July 29 at noon. This camp is open to male youth of our diocese in grades 7 thru 9 (13-15 yrs old) and will be conducted at the Sacred Heart Retreat House in Torch, Ohio. The camp will consist of times of prayer and discussion regarding the priesthood and will allow plenty of time for fun, recreation, swimming, group activities and food. The camp can accommodate up to 25 of our male youth on a first come, first served basis. The cost for the camp is $65.00 per person and this will cover all food, transportation, events, and use of Sacred Heart Retreat House. Financial Assistance is available if needed. Please call Fr. Tim Shannon at (740) or diosteubhof@sbcglobal.net West End Adoration Chapel Spending time with Jesus in adoration should not strike us as unusual. It is really a very natural human activity. When two people love each other, they want to spend time together to visit, to get to know each other better. You cannot love someone you do not know. Adoration of our Lord in the Eucharist is your chance to know Jesus better. One of the best aspects of Eucharistic adoration is this: how you spend your time with Jesus is entirely up to you. There is no one preaching to you, reading to you, telling you when to stand, sit, kneel, sing or whatever. You are on your own. You can spend your time with Jesus any way you want. You can pray your Rosary, you can read your Bible, or you can do some other spiritual reading. Remember, you are there to visit with your friend, Jesus. Talk with Him; tell Him your problems, your needs or your concerns. Tell Him about your joys, too. He's been waiting for a chance to visit with you, but your life is so busy with work, family and school, your line is always busy. Jesus can't get through to you. It's time to give yourself a break. Take a little time out for a private visit with your best friend, Jesus. The whole purpose of our human existence is to live forever with the Blessed Trinity in heaven, to enjoy forever, the victory of Jesus over sin and death. We get a foretaste of that eternal happiness and peace when we visit and adore Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. Weekends can be particularly difficult to fill in the summertime. MOVE IT OUT This is the title of one of the books published by Fr. Tom Forrest, C.Ss.R. who provided our parish mission. You may have heard his talks live or maybe you have listened to them on-line at our parish website. This book provides a greater explanation of the topics that he shared with us during the presentations. We have arranged to have this book offered to you at the simple cost of $ You will find these books at the front entrance of the church. In it there will be an envelope. To purchase this book, enclose the $10.00 in the envelope and place it in the collection. The subtitle is Sharing the Mission of Christ with Zeal. Bocce League: There are a few spots available on some teams for the parish Bocce League: We play Thursday evenings with the first game starting at 6:00pm. 5 DIOCESAN / PARISH SHARE CAMPAIGN: A total of 320 people have responded. Of this group 273 households have made a contribution or a pledge. The total amount pledged by these initial givers is $84, We have now achieved 95% of our target of $88, God bless you. This demonstrates how successful we can be if everyone will respond in a similar manner. We still have approximately 1200 households that have not given any form of response.
