PRESENTATION OF THE LORD On this day, the 40th day of Christmastide, we recall the sacrifice given by Mary and Joseph in the Temple of Jerusalem for the first-born male in their family, Jesus. He is recognized by the elders, Simeon and Anna, who give thanks for seeing Jesus themselves before they die. Simeon tells Mary that Jesus is destined to be a sign so that the secret thoughts of many may be laid bare. After this they went home to Nazareth. Jesus grew up and God s favor was with him. What are your secret thoughts and thanks? Text, Philip J. Sandstrom, STD 2001, OCP. All rights reserved. GOOD SAMARITAN Special thanks to Keith VandenHeuvel! After a recent Tuesday RE Session, Keith noticed that a car belonging to one of our catechists had a flat tire. With wind chills far below zero (and without a hat) he put on the spare. People like Keith make our Christian community special - thanks again to him and to all who sacrifice and care for others. 4 N ATIVITY OF OUR LORD PARISH GREEN BAY PAGE 4 PRESENTATION OF THE LORD is celebrated every February 2 nd ; this year it falls on Sunday. This feast has been named Candlemas or Light Mass because the symbol of candles and lights are a sign of the divine splendor of the one who comes to expel the dark shadows of evil and to make the whole universe radiant with the brilliance of his eternal light. (Sophrainus, on the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord). From the manger to Jerusalem, this feast flows from the Nativity narratives proclaimed weeks earlier and sets the stage for the Lent/Easter Season. Since this feast is on Saturday, we will bless any church and home candles at each weekend Mass. We invite you to bring your candles (put your name on them) and place them on the table at the front step of the altar. If you have candles from home that you want blessed, place them on this table (make sure you label it with your name). Also, there will be blessed candles available for you to purchase at $3.00 per pair. BLESSING OF THE THROATS The Feast of St. Blasé is always celebrated on February 3rd. St Blasé was the bishop of Sebaste in Armenia (Turkey). Before dying as a martyr to the Christian faith, he is said to have healed a boy who was choking. Since then, St. Blasé has been venerated as the patron of those who suffer from diseases of the throat. We pray in a special way on this day for protection from afflictions of the throat and other illnesses. Since this feast is on Monday this year, Fr. Jack will give a general blessing of the throats over all the Faithful at the end of each Mass on the weekend of February 1st and 2nd. TO BOW OR GENUFLECT Now that the tabernacle, housing the Blessed Sacrament, has been moved forward in our church, several people have asked what the proper reverence should be when passing by it. This excerpt is taken from an article that appeared in the Compass in March 2011: Bowing is the proper sign of reverence to the Altar (when no tabernacle is near it) while genuflection (on the right knee) is reserved for God, we only genuflect to the body of Christ reserved in the tabernacle. (If in doubt, just look for the sanctuary light (Red), which is kept burning by the tabernacle whenever the sacred species is present.) So, as a sign of adoration and love for the Body of Christ, we should genuflect, if physically possible, when passing by the tabernacle. Thanks for asking! THANK YOU FOR THE ROSARIES Nativity received a heartfelt thank you from Fr. Terry LaCombe, the Command Chaplain for the Marine Corps in San Diego, California, for the box of rosaries we sent to the Marines and recruits in December. Fr. LaCombe says he receives many requests for rosaries and with the rosary our men and women here can be reminded of the mystery of faith, praise God, concentrate on the mysteries, honor Mary and give thanks to Jesus for His birth, death and resurrection. What a blest people we are. CELEBRATING 50 YEARS AS A FAMILY OF FAITH Thank you to all those who took part in Nativity s 50th Anniversary Kick Off Lasagna Dinner and Mass on the Ice at the Arena. Paul is a contemporary Catholic Christian Inspirational Speaker, Musician, Composer and Recording Artist from Racine, Wisconsin. Theme of the Mission: Igniting the Light of Christ Within You Paul s ministry teaches the listeners why and how they are already wired to succeed in building themselves and the church while discovering God s purpose for their lives. He shares practical techniques people can use to increase their connection with the Presence of the Holy Spirit, the Risen Christ s gift to His disciples. Sunday February 16 th, 6:30 PM: Connecting with the Light of Christ Paul will tell us his story, his conversion from lukewarm-ness as a Catholic to a believer in miracles. He ll discuss the True Presence! Then he ll teach you about the miracle of you! Monday February 17 th, 6:30 PM: Experiencing the Light of Christ Paul will teach us as Catholics to trust in God. He ll share practical ideas on what we can do to break the mental cycles of anxiety, fear, doubt, worry, and guilt once and for all! Tuesday February 18 th, 6:30 PM: Living the Light of Christ Learn the warning signs that show how we can be imprisoned, all those things and attitudes that limit our willingness and energy to live fully our Christian faith the Light of Christ within you, no matter what happens to you. Wednesday February 19 th, 6:30 PM: Youth Night Presentation, combining music and the spoken word. We can all grow in our relationship with our Lord, Jesus Christ. As with all Paul s spoken word presentations, he selects songs from his own music that will illumine the topics discussed and point towards solutions to your concerns. His music, with its clear messages, will act as a lasting reminder that you can use long after the Mission to lift up your spirits and envision the Light of Christ within you. Paul has given this retreat from the East Coast to Hawaii. He has appeared on EWTN with his music. This mission will empower you to live a more successful spiritual life. Paul will speak and sing at all Masses the weekend before the Mission. All are invited and this Mission is free. A free will offering will be taken for those who want to help Paul extend the reach of his ministry. All presentations are 90 minutes and conducted in the church. Want more information?
