2 J UNE 8, 2014 PAGE 2 M y Family in Christ, As many of you are aware, I am having total hip replacement surgery in June followed by three weeks of rehab at a local center followed by three weeks of self-directed rehab. Dr. Grace states that it is not safe to return to work for at least six weeks. However, I have an Alaskan cruise scheduled from July 26 th to August 11 th. That chaplaincy is a huge incentive for me to push a bit harder to be in shape. As Good Pope Francis pleaded with the people of Argentina when they wanted to come to Rome for his installation, I ask you, as he requested, to keep me in your prayers and please don t try to visit me in my convalescence. Please just say a prayer that I can recover fully and continue my ministry here at Nativity. I see this time as designated to the healing process! Days will be packed with therapy and evening and nights with exhaustion. Thanks for understanding and respecting my need! I will not leave you orphaned; in my absence Fr. Robert (Bob) Rank who recently moved to Senior Priest status will provide for your spiritual needs. He will cover the Mass and Confession schedules plus any funerals. I feel honored to have him help; my brother attended Mass at St. Francis Solanus Casey Parish in Gresham while Fr. Bob served there and he told me that he is the best homilist he s ever heard. Lucky you! However, our Deacons will be rotating preaching with him, so all is good! Our Trustee/Treasurer, Dennis Krysiak, has fulfilled his two year term and he chooses not to seek another term. We are very grateful for his service and thank him for his expansive commitment to Nativity. That means we have a vacancy in that position, as I considered all those who serve Nativity as volunteers, I thought of Judy Schroeder. She gives endless hours to the parish in a number of areas. When I asked her to consider accepting the nomination, she thought about it and agreed that she would accept the nomination. Now, if there are others who are confirmed, practicing and active members and would like to be considered, please submit your name in writing to me. If necessary there would be an election in late June. Dennis has agreed to extend his service until September 1 st to sign checks and be present for emergencies, etc., for which I am very grateful. Thank in advance for you prayerful support! Sincerely in Christ, VENI CREATOR SPIRITUS! Holy Spirit, the Lord and life-giver. These words are in the Creed. Today we celebrate the coming of the Holy Spirit; He came to bestow a share in divine life upon God s chosen and covenanted people. There is sound, wind and fiery light as signs of the gift. People experience the reversal of the fall of Babel. Everyone hears in his or her own language the Apostles speaking. They speak about the marvels of God. The Spirit is given to each for a good purpose building up Christ s body. Veni Creator Spiritus! Text, Philip J. Sandstrom, STD 2001, OCP. All rights reserved. 2 CALENDAR RAFFLE WINNERS!!! Have faith in God and faith in me. In my Father s house there are many dwelling places, otherwise how could I have told you that I was going to prepare a place for you? These words from Sunday s Gospel on May 18, 2014 form the basis for my request that you help with our $100,000 budget deficit. We know that God is preparing a place for us and we recommit to take care of his church here at Nativity. With a utility cost of almost $50,000 this winter, other large expenses like the parking lot improvement, coupled with a significant decline in contributions, we need to address this situation. Let s all make a true sacrifice to raise $100,000 before July 1, We can do this because God has blessed us with the means, if we are willing to be honest with ourselves and make a true sacrifice! This collection combines four major causes: Catholic Communications/Evangelization, through which the Church is able to use media and technology to help spread the good news of Jesus; The Catholic University of America supports the work of this outstanding academic institution where many of our priests, religious, and lay people have received their education; The Catholic Home Missions Appeal gives grants to home mission dioceses and other missionary agencies in the United States and its dependencies; and the Black and Native American Missions, funds evangelization programs for these communities in dioceses throughout the country. Please give generously as you are able. 3

4 N ATIVITY OF OUR LORD PARISH GREEN BAY PAGE 4 PENTECOST SUNDAY This Weekend The Easter Season lasts 50 days, ending with Pentecost, hence the name. It celebrates the overwhelming experience of God pouring out His Spirit upon the first community of those who believed Jesus was the Lord and Christ (Acts 2:1-4). It is called the birth of the Church or the birth of the church s mission. The color for this day is red, which symbolizes the intense love and fire of the Holy Spirit. Also, a special prayer, called The Sequence is used on Pentecost after the second reading. The Sequence invites the Holy Spirit to come upon us to recreate, heal and forgive and is sung in hymn form. VENI SANCTE SPIRITUS Come Holy Spirit On both Confirmation (February 8th) and Pentecost (June 8th) weekends our six Altar Candles displayed tongues of fire. These were beautifully created and decorated by our own Steve Barnes. Thanks, Steve for creating art that evokes the HOLY SPIRIT for us as we journey in faith. CHURCH DECORATIONS Summer Ordinary Time The Worship Commission needs your assistance decorating for Spring-Summer Ordinary Time. Please join us on Monday, June 9th at 6:30 PM. Your assistance would be appreciated. Any time you can afford would be great; even during the day, if evenings don t work. Call Wayne at ext WITH GRATITUDE & REVERENCE The solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ (Corpus Christi) falls on June 22nd this year. As we come together to celebrate Eucharist ( thanks the ordinary way of saying thank you ) we come with a special sense of gratitude and reverence as we receive Christ s Body and Blood. This great gift of the Lord s presence is something that each of us must generously and joyfully share with others, both in the ministry of communion and in our ordinary Christian lives. In the ministry of communion, many have found a deep sense of gratitude and reverence of sharing the Body and Blood of Christ as a Eucharistic Minister. We welcome and are in need of new EMs to assist with the distribution of Holy Communion at all Mass times. Won t you pray and see if God might be calling you to this ministry? For more information, please contact Wayne at ext. 206 or natwe@nativityparish.com. LET S MAKE OUR HOUSE INVITING Any given week there are at least 2000 worshippers who come to celebrate Mass. With that, comes messy pews, e.g. songbooks, pew cards not properly stored in the hymnal racks and/or bulletins and trash left in the pews. In an effort to keep our House of God fresh and inviting for the next group of worshippers, we ask you to help keep the pews in an orderly fashion when you leave. Currently the Ushers try their best to clean up after each Mass, and the Church Helpers come once a week to clean the candle stands and holy water bowls, in addition to recycling the bulletins and attending to pews. Let s make our house inviting by storing the pew cards inside the songbooks, with the songbooks stored horizontally with the spine facing up. This habit done over and over each time you come to Mass will truly help make our church inviting for all who enter these doors. DO YOU GO TO THE 5:00 MASS? If this is your Mass of choice, I m sure you want the service to run smoothly, without delay so that Mass ends at a reasonable time. One major delay is during the Preparation of the Gifts, when the bread, wine and monetary gifts (collection) are gathered and presented to the priest as our sacrifice to God. In addition, there are other tasks that call for distribution to, or reception from worshippers, such as special collections and reverse collections, etc. All of these duties are ministerial tasks reserved for the ministry of USHER. As you are aware, Fr. Jack periodically asks for those who attend the 5:00 PM Mass to get involved because we are in serious need of more ushers. WON T YOU HELP? If you are a spouse, parent, sibling or friend of a current liturgical minister who serves at this Mass, this is a great way to get involved. In addition, this simple but fulfilling ministry gives you a chance to meet people while helping with those important duties at Mass. You will be scheduled as often as you tell us, so please give this a try. Please call Wayne Efferson at ext. 206 or natwe@nativityparish.com for more information. $CRIP PROGRAM Dedicated volunteers are in the Narthex before and after all Masses. $crip can also be purchased in the Parish Office during the week from 9:00 AM to 3:30 PM. The week of May 26th - June 1st Scrip sold $10, Profit - $ Thank you!
