3 WORSHIP NEWS Contact: Wayne Efferson Worship Servant Leader, x206 or ALL SOULS REMEMBRANCE PROGRAM ANNOUNCED: NO-COST CREMATED REMAINS INTERMENT WITH RITE OF COMMITTAL December 9, 2017 Allouez Catholic Cemetery & Chapel Mausoleum) Dear Parishes Communities and Funerals Directors, The Diocese of Green Bay s Office of Divine Worship and Allouez Catholic Cemetery & Chapel Mausoleum is excited to announce our new All Souls Remembrance Program, a free-of-charge opportunity for anyone who has cremated remains at home or is considering scattering, to inter them in a communal All Souls Remembrance Crypt with a special celebration of the Rite of Committal at the Chapel Mausoleum on Saturday, December 9, 2017, 11am, with Bishop David L. Ricken. The Catholic Church has accepted cremation for over fifty years and expresses that, as with a body of the deceased, the ashes of the faithful must be laid to rest in a sacred place, that is, in a cemetery or, in certain cases, in a church or an area, which has been set aside for this purpose. Furthermore, the reservation of the ashes of the departed in a sacred place ensures that they are not excluded from the prayers and remembrance of their family or the Christian community. It prevents the faithful departed from being forgotten, or their remains from being shown a lack of respect, which eventuality is possible, most especially once the immediately subsequent generation has too passed away. Also it prevents any unfitting or superstitious practices. (Instruction Ad resurgendum cum Christo, 5) This program, with the celebration of an annual Rite of Committal prepared for by the Diocese, will provide the opportunity for anyone, of any faith, the dignified committal and interment of their loved one s cremated remains in fulfilling this corporal work of mercy. For those wishing to take part in this program, please contact the Allouez Catholic Cemetery at (920) to RSVP for this opportunity. Retirement Collection December 9 & 10 SHARE IN THE CARE Retirement Collection benefits the men and women religious as well as our senior diocesan priests. In thanksgiving for all that our senior diocesan priests and religious have done, please prayerfully consider giving a generous gift to the collection. Please also pray for God s continued blessings on our diocesan priests, religious order priests, sisters and brothers. Why are we asking for your help? There are sky rocketing costs for our religious and some of them have insufficient income. There are more than 32,000 sisters, brothers, and priest religious past age 70 living in the United States. In the Diocese of Green Bay about 106 senior priests are receiving retirement benefits. By 2022, retired religious are projected to outnumber wage-earning religious by nearly three to one. The average retired diocesan priest receives $1,365 per month from the priest s pension fund. Help is needed to supplement the fund over the next 20 years. CHRISTMAS FLOWERS Deadline is Monday, December 11 The Worship Ministry will continue the tradition of honoring our deceased through the living symbol of fresh flowers (poinsettias). Your donation will help beautify our environment throughout the Christmas Season. Envelopes are provided in your monthly packet. Any amount is welcome, suggested amounts range from.00 to $ A special insert listing the names of those remembered will be included in the Christmas bulletin. THE ADVENT WREATH Xavier Seubert, OFM, wrote: The wreath is a cosmic symbol. It underlies how the universe is woven through human activity into the meaning of Christ. Branches from the forests, fed all year by earth, water, sun and air are woven together. Added to the branches are candles shaped from the wax of bees into the bearers of flame, which is so important for our survival and delight. All these are woven together into the final light and meaning of this the feast of Christmas, that is, into the heart of life s light born among us. The wreath symbolizes for Christian communities the world s movement into the life of Christ. Our wreath is decorated with three boxes of cedar boughs (Thanks to John Dauska, Kyle & Mary Beth Gigot, Ardell Puser, Michelle Krahenbuhl and Jane Jelinek) and is suspended over the center aisle, with the candles at the four corners of church. The four Advent Candles are created from four previous year s Paschal (Easter) Candles (3 x 15 -used for the core candle) and wrapped with the appropriate amount of 100% Bees Wax Sheets to get each to the size of 4 x 15. Our Resident Candle Designer, Steve Barnes, put on the final touches. Also, a special thanks goes to the 20 plus volunteers who showed up on November 27to create our church environment to reflect this special season of Advent, in preparation of The Nativity of Our Lord (Christmas), our parish s feast day. JESSE TREE The prophet Isaiah foretold the coming of Jesus, the Messiah, But a shoot shall bud from the stump of Jesse, and from his roots a bud shall blossom. Jesse was the father of the great King David of the Old Testament and is often looked upon as the first person in the genealogy of Jesus. This year the Worship Ministry chose to display this image in the center of the Narthex. IMMACULATE CONCEPTION This year this holy day falls on Friday, December 8and is a Holy Day of Obligation. Thus, we will celebrate two Masses: Thursday, 6:30 PM and Friday-9:00 AM. Liturgical Ministers are needed to help prepare for this celebration. Sign-ups are in the Sacristy and Usher s Room.

4 SACRAMENT OF RECONCILIATION DURING ADVENT Advent is penitential in nature a time for us to prepare for Christmas. Besides our regularly scheduled confessions on Saturdays (4:00 pm), we offer two additional dates: Tuesday, December 12 (6:15 pm) & Wednesday, December 13 (6:15 pm). Priests from neighboring parishes will help the children, youth and the faithful of Nativity Parish celebrate this Sacrament. The children and youth will follow Examination Conscience that is provided to them. The adults are provided with copies of an Examination of Conscience booklet, Preparing for Confession, to help them reflect on the Sacrament. You are kindly requested to return the booklets after use. We will be using the Second Rite of Penance, which means that there will be a short Penitential Service to help you to meaningfully celebrate the Sacrament. (Text of the Service will be available). The Service will involve a Scripture Reading followed by a Homily and individual confessions. For those unable to attend any of the reconciliation dates at Nativity, you can attend one at a West Side parish. See dates below: St. John the Baptist: Wednesday, December 6, 7:00 PM St. Elizabeth Ann Seton: Wednesday, December 6, 6:30 PM Annunciation: Thursday, December 7, 5:30-6:30 PM (Reconciliation and Silent Adoration) Thursday, December 21, 5:30-6:30 PM (Reconciliation and Silent Adoration) St. Jude: Saturday, December 23, 3:00 PM (before 4:00 PM Mass) St. Patrick: Saturday, December 23, 3:00 PM (before 4:00 PM Mass) PREPARING FOR CHRISTMAS The Worship Ministry is preparing for Christmas decorations and needs your assistance. Christmas Decorations are set for Sunday, December 17 at 12:00 PM. If you can t help on either of these days then how about Monday Wednesday, during the day? Our biggest need is putting the lights on the large and small trees...can you help? Contact Wayne Efferson, Worship Servant Leader if you have questions ( ext. 206) or natwe@nativityparish.com LECTOR WORKBOOKS The Church begins its 2018 liturgical year on the First Sunday of Advent, December 3. The new liturgical year, beginning with the First Sunday of Advent, also marks the transition from one lectionary cycle (A, B, or C) to the next...readings built around readings from the three synoptic Gospels - Matthew, Mark, and Luke. We transition from Matthew s Gospel to Mark s (Cycle B). All Lectors are requested to pick up a 2018 Lector Workbook from the rear Sacristy. Lectors, check your name off the list when you pick up your book. THE WORD AMONG US This year for your Advent journey to Christmas we will make available enough copies of this magazine for each household. They are free; however, we won t refuse any free-will offering. the WORD among us will assist you in reading, meditating on and understanding scripture [and to] provide sound, practical advice for living out the Christian life. The magazine s name, the WORD among us, comes from the Prologue to the Gospel of John: The Word became flesh and dwelt among us, full of grace and truth; we have beheld his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father (John 1:14). We hope this resource will help you contribute to the church s ongoing mission of proclaiming the gospel to the world and growing ever more deeply in our love for the Lord. 4 th SUNDAY of ADVENT & CHRISTMAS EVE on the SAME DAY -!!?? This year, both the Church and Packers calendars present some challenges on the weekend that we celebrate the 4 th Sunday of Advent (Dec. 23/24). Our diocesan Worship Office writes, The 4 th Sunday of Advent falls on December 24, 2017 (Christmas Eve); this has not occurred since Despite falling on a Sunday, the faithful are still obligated to participate in two Masses between Dec 23-25: one for the Fourth Sunday of Advent (anytime from 4pm on Saturday, Dec. 23 until 4pm on Sunday, Dec. 24) and one for the Christmas Solemnity (either on Sunday, Dec. 24 after 4pm or Monday Christmas Day). Therefore, we will celebrate the 4 th Sunday of Advent as follows: Sat. Dec. 23 4:00 PM (Mass will be moved to avoid traffic congestion of the 7:30 PM Packers/Vikings game) and Sun. Dec. 24 8:30 AM. We will celebrate Christmas as follows: Christmas Eve (Sun., Dec. 24) 4:00 PM (Church and Bona Hall) and 7:00 PM; Christmas Day (Mon. Dec. 25) 8:30 & 10:15 AM. All Liturgical Ministers are requested to assist at these Masses; sign-up on the sheets in the Sacristy/Ushers room. EUCHARISTIC HOLY HOUR (WITH BENEDICTION) In Bishop Ricken s recent pastoral reflections, Teach My People to Pray, Phase 1 of Disciples on the Way: Prayer and Holiness, he asked that each parish offer a monthly Eucharistic Holy Hour Service. Since we, Nativity, currently offer Eucharistic Adoration each Monday (9:30 AM - 1:00 PM), we will include a Holy Hour Service (Benediction when a Deacon leads), on the second Monday of each Month. Our next HOLY HOUR will be on Monday, December 11 at 12:05 PM. CHRISTMAS MASS SIGN-UP SHEETS All Liturgical Ministers are requested to assist at one of the Christmas Masses; Sign-up in the Sacristy and/or Usher s Room. Please sign-up today!

FYTD Budgeted Receipts $363, FYTD Actual Receipts.....$312, Fiscal Year Deficit thru week # $( 50,800.00) Maintenance Improvement Fund..$ Christmas Flowers..... $ Thanksgiving $ Hi friends! HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! Ooops...I mean Happy Liturgical New Year!!! Okay, okay...happy Advent?! We ve just entered Advent, and are eagerly awaiting the birth of Christ. We begin this journey keeping hope, love, joy and peace in our hearts. And, we too will be intentional in working towards bringing happiness to others. We are trimming trees, writing Christmas cards, hanging lights, and scurrying through the stores or online looking for the perfect gift for others. During this time of year, we work so hard preparing for Christmas that sometimes we forget to be intentionally observant of the weeks preparing us for Christmas Advent. So what can we do to STOP and be INTENTIONAL this Advent? I, CST, have done a couple of things in the past to make Advent more intentional as I prepared for Christmas. Some of the things I have done include, reading a daily Advent devotion perhaps provided in the back of your or someone else s Church. I also like to make an Advent Calendar by doing an Intentional Act of Kindness each day of Advent and recording it on the Advent Calendar. I enjoy taking some intentional time in prayer whether that s going to adoration, making time to sit in front of the Tabernacle, or simply praying the Rosary each day. All of these things helps me prepare my mind and heart for Christmas. And, it centers me in a way where I am able to be more patient and giving. So, how might you be intentional this Advent? How will you journey in prayer, peace, and with others? Happy Advent! May it be as intentionally peaceful and filled with love as it can be.
