4 WORSHIP NEWS Contact: Wayne Efferson, Director of Worship , x206 or AFRICAN PALMS USA Since 1976, this outreach program of St. John s Church, Olney, MD sells more than 15 million (to 2,600 churches) annually. Over the years, the grants support East African countries like Tanzania with self-help programs and community projects, such as (HIV/AIDS). The crosses are made by Africans from native palms. Since 1995, the Worship Commission has made these available every Palm Sunday and collected donations well over $5,700. Again, thank you for your donations to carry on this important mission work. FIREWOOD NEEDED In preparation of the Holy Fire that begins the Great Easter Vigil (Saturday, April 4 at 8:00 PM), we are looking for firewood. If you d like to donate some, please contact Wayne Efferson at natwe@nativityparish.com / , x206. FAST AND ABSTINENCE Catholics are to keep the Lenten fast and abstinence according to the following directives: Catholics who have celebrated their 14th birthday are bound to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday, all the Fridays of Lent, and Good Friday. On these days of complete abstinence, meat or soup or gravy made from meat are not to be eaten. Catholics who have celebrated their 18th birthday, in addition to abstaining from meat, are bound to fast as well on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Fasting means eating only one full meal per day. Smaller amounts of food may be taken at two other meals, but no food should be eaten between meals. The obligations to fast ceases with the celebration of one s 59th birthday. VEILING THE STATIONS OF THE CROSS and other religious icons will take place after the stripping of the altar on Holy Thursday; this is in preparation of Good Friday which requires that only one cross be visible (our main cross will be used in the veneration). PASCHAL TRIDUUM (HOLY WEEK) EASTER SUNDAY SIGN-UP SHEETS As we approach these most sacred days, all Liturgical Ministers are requested to assist at these liturgies: Holy Thursday: 7:00 PM Good Friday: 1:00 PM & 7:00 PM Easter Vigil: Easter Sunday: Sign up sheets are in the Sacristy 8:00 PM 8:30 AM & 10:15 AM (Bona Hall & Church) EASTER VIGIL CHOIR (Easter Vigil Mass - 8:00 PM, March 26) Calling all Easter Vigil Singers! 5 Sense of the Season The word Triduum comes from the Latin and means three days. It is commonly pronounced TRIH-doo-uhm and is usually used in reference to the Easter Triduum, the three most sacred days in the church year. The Easter Triduum begins with the evening Mass of the Lord s Supper on Holy Thursday, reaches its high point at the Easter Vigil and concludes with evening prayer on Easter Sunday. Often there is confusion about how that block of time can be counted as three days. The traditional Jewish practice of counting days from sunset to sunset is used during the Triduum. Thus, Holy Thursday evening to Good Friday evening is the first day, Good Friday evening to Holy Saturday evening is the second day and Holy Saturday evening to Sunday evening is the third day. After centuries of neglect, Pope Pius XII in 1955 restored the Triduum liturgies to their rightful place as the culmination of the entire liturgical year. Although we talk of the three days, our Triduum prayer is best understood as one liturgy in three interlocking movements. The death and resurrection of the Lord cannot be separated. The meaning of these days is distorted when we imagine that the liturgy re-enacts the final events in the life of Jesus in a sort of historical review. We miss the point in that case. The mystery of Jesus death and resurrection is a present reality; the boundaries of time, and the boundaries of death, have no power here. Our past, present and future are irrevocably marked by our own immersion into this mystery through Baptism. We wash one another s feet, reverence the cross, light fires in the night and proclaim the stories of our salvation with an awed awareness that this is what it means to be baptized. The Easter Vigil then is the premier time to welcome new members into the church through Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist. Ideally, no other parish events are scheduled on these three days; the presence, time and energy of every person in the community are needed for what we do here. Yes, this may be inconvenient, but birth and death are rarely convenient! Our forty days of prayer, fasting and almsgiving lead us to the Triduum beyond its history, into its mystery. 6 Good Friday Collection For The Holy Places Peter was born there. So were Andrew and Phillip. In fact all the Apostles called it home. Home an almost magic word. Even when we move away. The place we were born, the place we grew up that s home, that is all that word means. For Catholic Christians there is a special home across the sea in the Holy Land. This is the place where Christ was born, lived, preached, worked His miracles and died. Here is a perpetual prayer in the holy places associated with Christ s life and death and the beginnings of our Catholic Religion. Today, however, home is in need. Most of the Christians who live near and care for the Holy Places in Jerusalem and Palestine are very poor or foreign missioners in a foreign land. For over 800 years since the 13 th century the Franciscan Friars have been charged with the care of the Holy Places. Each year, on Good Friday we take up a collection in every church in the United States to support their ministry. Here at Nativity Parish we will take up the collection on Good Friday. Every penny collected goes for that work nothing is kept here at Nativity Parish. The Holy Land, despite the troubles and war which seem to plague its history, is Christ s favorite place. He chose it as His birthplace when He could have chose any place in the world. The Shrines, in the Holy Land are a constant reminder that Christ, Our Savior, did live, did walk this earth, did sit and eat and preach and was crucified for our sins. Lent is nearly over. Your time, God willing, has brought you closer to Him as you kept these six weeks of prayer and fasting. Please be as generous as you can with this special act of almsgiving, the collection for the Holy Land. God has promised us a reward for even a cup of water given in His name. You can imagine His response when you have shown your concern for the land of His birth with a gift for the many men and women missioners who live and work there at the Holy Places. You may use the Good Friday Collection envelope stapled to this sheet or the one in your Church Envelope Packet. The Holy Land Franciscans Washington, D.C. 6
