VIDEO PROJECT SYSTEM As you can see, the installation of our new media system is underway; we hope to have it operational by mid-late August. Currently the Worship Commission will be training parishioners for this new ministry. We have about six interested individuals but will need many more to run this state of the art system each Sunday, starting this summer. Training is minimal, and operation of the system is simple. NATIVITY (ADULT) CHOIR Beginning September 13, the Nativity Adult Choir will start another year of leading our parish in song at the 8:30 AM Mass. (Choir sings on the second and fourth Sundays). Our first rehearsal will be on Thursday, September 10 from 7:00-8:30 PM (Church). Current, and new members, are invited to attend. We are in need of all voices and would welcome anyone who wishes to join us. For more information, call Mary Kay, Choir Director, at RCIA - RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION FOR ADULTS ARE YOU CATHOLIC? Would you like to know more about the Catholic faith? Are you or someone you know interested in converting from another Christian religion, or maybe someone you know has never been baptized and is interested in becoming a Catholic? RCIA, the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults can be one way of answering these questions. Inquiry sessions will be held on Sundays, beginning September 13 following the 8:30 AM Mass (in the Lounge, adjacent to Bona Hall). If you or someone you know are interested in learning what the RCIA has to offer, contact Wayne Efferson at ( x206, or at natwe@nativityparish.com) 3
4 Laudato Si The Encyclical of Pope Francis on the Environment This is an eight session series on the encyclical of Pope Francis on the environment. The series will be led by Dr. Robert Berchmans, Director of Faith Formation. The encyclical is a wake-up call to help understand the destruction that humans are rendering to the environment and to fellow human beings. This series will help participants walk through the entire document. It will begin with an introductory presentation on the context and meaning of the encyclical, followed by six sessions on the six chapters of the document and conclude with an action oriented summation in the final session. A free-will offering will be taken to cover the cost of the materials or you can purchase the encyclical or download it from the website. When: Tuesdays, 6:30 PM 7:30 PM September 29, October 6, 13, 27, November 3, 10, 24 and December 1 Pope Francis instituted a day of payer entitled the WORLD DAY OF PRAYER FOR THE CARE OF CREATION to be celebrated on September 1 of each year. Pope Francis emphasizes the dignity of the human person as the motivation for caring for the environment. It's no accident that Pope Francis uses the word DIGNITY 25 times in the environmental Encyclical Letter Laudato Si. Human dignity underlines all that can be said about life on planet Earth and the responsibility shared by "every person who lives on this planet." That is why the theme chosen by the US Bishops for Catechetical Sunday is so timely and appropriate throughout the year. We invite you, and all parish ministers, to join in Safeguarding the Dignity of Every Human Person and in making this year An Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy Where: Nativity Parish, Bona Hall To Register: or natcb@nativityparish.com by Friday, September 25 FIRST RECONCILIATION PARENT MEETINGS Monday, September 14, 6:30 to 7:30 pm or Tuesday, September 15, 6:30 to 7:30 pm Choose one of the above meetings, which begins the process of preparation for the Sacrament of Reconciliation for second graders (and any older children may not yet have received the Sacrament). We will provide information and orientation to help you and your child have a wonderful, grace-filled experience of the Sacrament. Please contact Charmaine at the Faith Formation office ( ) with questions and let her know which meeting you will be attending. CATECHIST IN-SERVICE Wednesday, September 16, 6:00 pm All the catechists in the Faith Formation program are warmly invited to the first in-service, which will begin with a meal and fellowship followed by faith sharing and catechetical input. This will set the direction and vision for the entire year. Please feel the support of the community of disciples who will walk with you throughout the year to form our children and youth as they heed the call of Jesus to follow him to be his disciples. 4
5 FAITH FORMATION Contact: Dr. Robert Berchmans x 216 or natrb@nativityparish.com SEEKING CATECHISTS FOR OUR CHILDREN AND YOUTH Parents and other generous adults serving as catechists are the reason why our Religion Education programs are so effective. Many of us might feel called to serve as catechists, but do not feel we have enough knowledge of the faith to teach effectively. Not true remember, God doesn t call the equipped, He equips the called. Our staff, and your fellow catechists, plus God s grace, are there for you! Catechists need training to be effective in the classroom, just like each of us do in our workplace. We offer training sessions throughout the year to help catechists know their material and connect with other teachers. Our staff provides personal support and individual training for those with less experience. Many catechists prefer to teach as part of a team. Do you know of someone you would like to partner with spouse, child, parent, friend? We very much welcome these arrangements. JOIN THE FAITH FORMATION MINISTRY Are you interested in helping provide quality Faith Formation for children, youth, and adults? We invite you to be a member of our ministry for the school year. We are seeking parish members from a variety of backgrounds who are interested in helping the Faith Formation Ministry grow. Some of the specific goals we have this year, as part of our Faith Formation Ministry, are: Creating a mission and vision statement for Faith Formation Brainstorming and Planning Catechist Formation Creating a Family Handbook Planning different Faith Formation Activities for the Family Our meetings are approximately an hour and a half and they take place on the second Thursday of the month. Please pray about this opportunity. Once again this year, as a way of saying thanks to our catechists, we are waiving the fee for one child enrolled in our Faith Formation program if a parent serves as a catechist for Religion Education Classes (or a stipend if one has no children in the program.) We need more great catechists and commission members. Is the Holy Spirit calling you? FAITH FORMATION PROGRAMS Have You Registered Yet? Registration forms for our programs were sent out to all families a couple of weeks ago. If you did not receive one please contact the Faith Formation Office at Copies are available in the Parish Office and in the Narthex. Happy Year of Consecrated Life: A time to thank God for the gift of consecrated men and women in our Church and to ask Him to send more laborers into His abundant harvest. For the past year, I have been a Candidate with the Carmelite Sisters of the Most Sacred Heart of Los Angeles. This is my first step in formally discerning a call to religious life within our contemplative active community. In order to be accepted into the community and continue in my religious life formation, I must be free of educational debt from my undergrad at the University of St. Thomas in Minnesota. Your financial support is needed as I continue to pay down the remaining $49,000 on my college loans. I ask you to prayerfully consider joining with me in offering your financial support for my Vocation. I desire to follow Christ s Call to be His bride, but I cannot do it alone. In the words of St. John Paul II in Vita Consecrata, those who let themselves be seized by his Love cannot help but abandon everything to follow Him. Please be assured of my personal prayers for you, your intentions and Nativity, where I received all of my first Sacraments. Please let me know of any special prayer requests that I can offer for you. It is my honor and joy. Your support can be easily made online at habit. Additionally, checks can also be written out to Christine Ertl and mailed to the address below. All gifts are non-tax deductible and to be made in my name. God reward you! Christine Ertl, Heart of Mary 819 Buena Vista Street Duarte, CA
