3 WORSHIP NEWS Contact: Wayne Efferson, Worship Leader x206 or OUR LENTEN JOURNEY On Ash Wednesday we were marked with an ashen cross on our foreheads and hear the words, Repent and believe in the gospel. This is a reminder of our dying and rising with the Lord through the waters of Baptism, to live out the Paschal Mystery (life, death and resurrection of our Lord). Lent is a time to look within our hearts to find why we chose and continue to be a follower of Jesus Christ. Let the waters of the Baptismal Font be a reminder of our call to live our baptismal commitments each time we make the sign of the cross with these life giving waters. However, our simple Cross [the Tree of Life; more than symbol of death, but rather a place and the experience in which death is transformed into life ( beta crux, the blessed cross)] is accented with vines and purple cloth which leads the eye to the Baptismal Font (and Holy Water Stands). And our bare church environment conveys a sense of being emptied out and being sustained by God alone. This journey to Easter is not just for us Catholics who have received the sacraments of initiation but also for those who want to join us in faith to be Missionary Disciples: Catechumens (the un-baptized who will be fully initiated into our faith at the Easter Vigil through the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation & Holy Communion) and Candidates (Catholics and/or non-catholics who have been baptized but want to be fully initiated into the Catholic faith through the sacraments of Confirmation and Holy Communion). It is our hope that during these 40 days each of us will be renewed in faith through the Paschal Mystery. Though the most appropriate time for Baptism is the Easter Vigil and the Easter Season until Pentecost, baptisms can be celebrated in Lent (these will take place after Mass). Because the days of Holy Week (from Monday to Thursday inclusive) have precedence over all other celebrations, it is not fitting that Baptisms or Confirmations be celebrated on these days since they have their natural place in the Easter Vigil. READINGS FOR THE WEEK OF MARCH 10 Sunday: Dt 26:4-10/Ps 91:1-2, 10-11, 12-13, [cf. 15b]/Rom 10:8-13/Lk 4:1-13 Monday: Lv 19:1-2, 11-18/Ps 19:8, 9, 10, 15 [Jn 6:63b]/ Mt 25:31-46 Tuesday: Is 55:10-11/Ps 34:4-5, 6-7, 16-17, [18b]/ Mt 6:7-15 Wednesday: Jon 3:1-10/Ps 51:3-4, 12-13, [19b]/ Lk 11:29-32 Thursday: Est C:12, 14-16, 23-25/Ps 138:1-2ab, 2cde-3, 7c-8 [3a]/Mt 7:7-12 Friday: Ez 18:21-28/Ps 130:1-2, 3-4, 5-7a, 7bc-8 [3]/ Mt 5:20-26 Saturday: Dt 26:16-19/Ps 119:1-2, 4-5, 7-8 [1b]/ Mt 5:43-48 Next Sunday: Gn 15:5-12, 17-18/Ps 27:1, 7-8, 8-9, [1a]/Phil 3:17 4:1 or 3:20 4:1/Lk 9:28b-36 SACRAMENT OF RECONCILIATION DURING LENT MARCH 13 AT This will include a Penance Service with Individual Confessions. During Lent the faithful are encouraged to attend daily Mass with Holy Communion, to participate in penance services, and to receive Sacramental Absolution. MUSIC FOR THE LENTEN GATHERING/ PENITENTIAL RITE Last Lent, we, the faithful, responded well to the new Lenten Gathering Rite, God of Creation by Ian Callahan, which incorporated both the Gathering Song and the Penitential Rite in one movement. Again, we will use this as our Lenten Gathering Rite. In addition we will introduce and use a new/old Mass setting, Jan Vermulst s Mass for Christian Unity. This Mass was written in 1964, following Vatican II, in response to the Church s call that the Mass be celebrated in the vernacular ( language of the people ; for Americans, from Latin to English) to enable and lead the faithful to a fuller, conscious and active participation. Some of us old enough will remember it primarily being used in the 60 s and 70 s. Because of its simple and familiar melody, we decided to use it for Lent We, also, will use a new Lenten song, In These Days of Lenten Journey, for the Sundays of Lent (Preparation of the Gifts). The Worship Ministry hopes this music will assist you in your Lenten journey. WORLD S POOR COLLECTION On the Fourth Sunday of Lent (March 30-31), we will sponsor a special collection for the World s Poor. This collection combines an appeal for four Catholic agencies who serve the poor and those living on the edge of society all over the world. Pray those living in poverty will be comforted, lifted up, and will receive a lasting opportunity to preserve their human dignity through meaningful work. LENTEN RESOURCES THE WORD AMONG US AND CRS RICE BOWL Will help you on your Lenten journey to Easter. They are free and located at the entrances.

Strengthening Faith through Adult Faith Formation Programs Recent history bears witness that if adults are not wellformed in the Faith, the younger generations will lack formation as well. But with solid and vibrant adult faith formation programs, a personal relationship with Christ is better fostered among parishioners, the Sacraments begin to take on more relevance to everyday life and the motivation to share the Good News with those outside the flock is awakened. From there, the good work of catechizing children by the local parish is more likely to be reinforced by well-formed parents. In short, the benefits are incalculable! Joe Tremblay, Adult Faith Formation Coordinator, assists parish leaders in bringing souls to Christ. Thanks to the Bishop s Appeal he is able to provide resources, guest speakers and curricula to help parishes advance the mission in forming adults through Christ.
