2 F E B R U A R Y 1 9, P A G E 2 REACHING OUT TO THE HOMEBOUND Imagine being homebound. You are unable to attend Sunday Mass. For some people within the Catholic Diocese, this is a reality. The Bishop s Appeal makes it possible for the homebound to celebrate God s Good News with thousands of Catholics across the airwaves. TV Mass provides them with the opportunity to participate in Sunday Liturgy while bringing comfort and joy to people in need. It is a sort of peace that one can only achieve through their relationship with God. Making a gift makes a difference in the life of someone else and is one way we are called to serve the Lord. Please give generously to Bishop s Appeal For more information on how to support TV Mass by giving a gift to the Bishop s Appeal, please contact your parish, visit the Bishop s Appeal website at or call Debbie toll-free at ext WOMEN S GUILD MEETING & LENTEN SPIRITUAL GATHERING Please join us on Thursday, March 1st, at 6:30 PM in Bona Hall. 3 S E V E N T H S U N D A Y I N O R D I N A R Y T I M E P A G E 3 Spiritual Growth through Lenten Practices Lent is a time for Catholics to seriously consider their call to holiness. The Christian faithful in their own way are bound to do penance in the spirit of holiness and sacrifice. All the faithful are invited to join together as a people in common observance of daily prayer, works of charity, and attention to their responsibilities with love and devotion. Fast and Abstinence Catholics are to keep the Lenten fast and abstinence according to the following directives: Catholics who have celebrated their 14th birthday are bound to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday, all the Fridays of Lent, and Good Friday. On these days of complete abstinence, meat or soup or gravy made from meat are not to be eaten. Catholics who have celebrated their 18th birthday, in addition to abstaining from meat, are bound to fast as well on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Fasting means eating only one full meal per day. Smaller amounts of food may be taken at two other meals, but no food should be eaten between meals. The obligation to fast ceases with the celebration of one s 59th birthday. In the spirit of Lent, the faithful will not lightly excuse themselves from these obligations. Penance and Good Works During Lent the faithful are encouraged to attend daily Mass with Holy Communion, to participate in penance services, and to receive Sacramental Absolution. It is also a time to take part, as frequently as possible, in public and private prayer and devotion, to give generously to the poor and those in need, to perform acts of kindness toward the sick and the aged, and to practice voluntary self-denial by moderation in food, drink, and all activities of life. Individual Reconciliation at Nativity: Saturdays 4:00-4:40 PM (not on April 7th) March 2nd & 13th (end of Mass until 10:30 AM) Saturdays, March 10th & 24th (3:30-4:40 PM) Penance Services w/individual Reconciliation at Nativity and other Westside Parishes: March 7th, 7:00 PM (St. John the Baptist) March 11th, 1:00 PM (St. Jude) March 14th, 6:30 PM (St. Elizabeth Seton) March 21st, 6:00 PM (St. Agnes) March 27th, 6:30 PM (Nativity Parish) Easter Duty for Holy Communion All Catholics, after they have been fully initiated into the Most Holy Eucharist, are bound by the obligation of receiving Communion at least once a year. This precept is to be fulfilled during the Easter Season up to Trinity Sunday or anytime during all the weeks of Lent. For a just cause, this precept may be fulfilled at some other time during the year. Baptism The most appropriate time for Baptism is the Easter Vigil and the Easter Season until Pentecost. Baptism is also celebrated on Sundays of the year. Because the days of Holy Week, from Monday to Thursday inclusive, have precedence over all other celebrations, it is not fitting that baptisms or confirmations be celebrated on these days since they have their natural place in the Easter Vigil. 4 N A T I V I T Y O F O UR L O R D P A R I S H G R E E N B AY P A G E 4 Marriage The Ritual Mass for Marriage is prohibited on the Sundays of Lent, Ash Wednesday, and during Holy Week and Easter Week. (Also on All Souls Day and all solemnities). When marriage is celebrated during the season of Lent, it is contrary to the Lenten spirit to request elaborate weddings with lavish decorations. Devotion and Prayer Opportunities Devotions provide a special opportunity for prayer, reflection, meditation, and contemplation. During Lent the faithful are invited to enter into the Way of the Cross, a pilgrimage recalling the sufferings of Jesus and the final Resurrection in glory. Daily Reflections for Lent Not by Bread Alone-2012 by Bishop Robert Morneau (available at Church entrances) Stations of the Cross Tuesdays, February 28th, March 6, 13, 20, 27th, April 3rd at 6:30 PM Lent Family Gathering Wednesday, March 28th, Bona Hall; dinner at 5:30 PM with presentation and activities from 6:10 to 8:00 PM. All parish members are invited. Taize Prayer Wednesday, March 21 at 6:30 PM Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament Mondays after 9:00 AM Mass to 3:00 PM Soup and Substance Thursdays, March 8, 15, 22, at 6:00 PM 2nd Fridays for Seniors March 9 at 9:00 AM (Topic: The Shrine of Our Lady of Good Help-Shrine Caretakers) -at Nativity Parish) Blessing of the Oils The Holy Oils will be blessed by Bishop Ricken during the Mass of the Chrism on April 3. The Holy Oils are blessed in the presence of representatives from all the parishes of the diocese. After the Mass of the Chrism, the representatives take vessels of the Oil of Chrism, the Oil of the Sick, and the Oil of Catechumens to their home parish for presentation during the Holy Thursday Mass. Throughout the year, every Catholic is offered comfort, blessing, and power from the gift of the Holy Oils. The Paschal Triduum The central celebration of the core Christian message and the high point of the entire Christian year is the three day celebration of Holy Thursday, (April 5 at 7:00 PM), Good Friday (April 6 at 1:00 & 7:00 PM), and the Easter Vigil (April 7 at 8:00 PM). By dying, the Lord destroyed our death, by rising He restored our life. The Easter Triduum of the Passion and Resurrection of Christ is the celebration of the Paschal Mystery, our salvation. Easter Sunday, (April 8 Masses at 8:30 AM, Mass in Church (Nativity Choir) and in Bona Hall, 10:15 AM, Mass in Church (Children s Choir) and in Bona Hall). The Triduum is one single liturgical action that continues over three days: Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter. The Triduum is not a part of Lent, but in its entirety celebrates the Easter event. The spirit of the fast during the three days is not a Lenten Fast but the Paschal Fast. The entire focus of the Triduum is on the Triumph of the Cross and the Resurrection, not only in the life of Christ, but in our own lives as well. Therefore every Catholic is greatly encouraged and invited to join in the drama and action of The Three Great Days of Triduum. For every Catholic this is more than the story of Christ, it is the story of our own life, passion, death, and resurrection. 4

If your worksite would like to have a box or you want to do a one day collection at a meeting, please contact Doro at We can do pick up for 6 OUR LENTEN JOURNEY February 22nd When we come Ash Wednesday to be marked with an ashen cross on our foreheads and hear the words, Repent and believe in the gospel, again we will be reminded of the reality of our dying and rising with the Lord that we celebrated through the waters of baptism. Lent is a time to look within our hearts to find why we chose and continue to be a follower of Jesus. During Lent you will notice the water remaining in our Baptismal Font and in the holy water bowls at the entrances. It will serve as a reminder of our call to live our baptismal commitments. We invite you to bless yourself with the sign of the cross as you enter/leave each liturgy. With this Water of Life, all other seasonal decorations remain subtle. However, our simple Cross [the Tree of Life; more than symbol of death, but rather a place and the experience in which death is transformed into life ( beta crux, the blessed cross)] is accented with purple cloth which leads the eye to the Font. And our bare church environment conveys a sense of being emptied out and being sustained by God alone. This journey to Easter is not just for us Catholics who have received the sacraments of initiation but also for those who want to join us: the Catechumens (the un-baptized who will be fully initiated into our faith at the Easter Vigil through the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation & Holy Communion) and Candidates (baptized non-catholics who want to be fully initiated into our faith through the sacraments of Confirmation & Holy Communion). It is our hope that during these 40 days each of us will be renewed in faith through the dying and rising of our Lord (the Paschal Mystery). Though the most appropriate time for baptism is the Easter Vigil and the Easter Season until Pentecost, baptism is also celebrated on Sundays of the year. Because the days of Holy Week, from Monday to Thursday inclusive, have precedence over all other celebrations, it is not fitting that baptisms or confirmations be celebrated on these days since they have their natural place in the Easter Vigil. LENTEN FASTING Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, February 22nd By itself, fasting is probably not very useful spiritually. But along with prayer, fasting can help us to recognize our deep need for God. Physical hunger can help awaken our spiritual hunger. Fasting can help us realize how attached we are to superficial comfort and pleasure, challenging us to rethink our priorities. Fasting can be an act of solidarity with those who regularly experience hunger, giving us a brief glimpse of their daily struggle. During your fasting this Lent, you might want to learn more about hunger and its causes. Here are just a few of the many web sites you could visit to learn more about or to get involved in solving the problem of hunger: America s Second Harvest Bread for the World Heifer International The Hunger Project Operation Rice Bowl Poverty.com

(RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION FOR ADULTS): At the 8:30 Mass on the First Sunday of Lent (February 26 th ) you will hear these words... Fr. Jack and members of Nativity Parish, since the First Sunday of Advent, you have witnessed each week as our Candidate (Alan Young) was sent from the assembly, after the homily, to further reflect upon the Word of God. Now, after prayerful discernment, along with family, with his Sponsor, and with parish Catechists, he is asking our parish community to affirm his faith formation by sending him to participate in the Rite of Election and the Call to Continuing Conversion at Our Lady of Lourdes, DePere. Alan will sign and take the Book of Elect with him to present to Bishop Ricken, along with the hundreds of Catechumens and Candidates throughout the Diocese. We ask that you continually keep him in your prayers so that he will be ready to join us around the altar at Easter. Located in the narthex you will find Alan s photo on an easel and basket with his name on slips of paper. We invite you to take his name so that you can keep him in prayer during his journey in becoming Catholic. MAKE A BED FOR A HOMELESS PERSON Do you have any old blankets, quilts, and/or mattress pads (no electric blankets please) that you would like to donate for making portable sleeping bags for the homeless in Milwaukee.
