My name is Deacon Michael Dabeck and I have been hired here at Nativity Parish as of February 8. I have had the privilege of serving the Saint Matthew Parish Community in Green Bay as a Deacon for the past seven and where my family have been parish members for 21 years. My wife Ann and I have two sons. Jameson is my oldest son who lives in Stevens Point working as a Statistical Analyst for Sentry Insurance. Robenson is my youngest son, and is a junior at East High School in Green Bay. Ann and I have been involved in many ministries during our time at Saint Matthew s including Pastoral Council, Worship Committee, Marriage and Confirmation preparation, Communion Services at Nursing Homes, the Giving Tree and teaching the High School Religious Education program. As Deacon at the parish, I had the privilege to assist Father at Mass and was given the opportunity to preach on a monthly basis along with presiding at Weddings, Baptisms and Funerals. I worked with the youth in our parish community by attending week-long mission trips, teaching and serving others, with the Young Neighbors in Action Organization. Since my Ordination in May of 2010, I have been looking forward to having the opportunity to serve in a Parish on a full-time basis following the guidance of the Holy Spirit and working toward being that servant I was Ordained to be. I know I am looking forward to being involved in many different activities throughout Nativity Parish, and am excited to fill God s plan for me here. My family and I are excited to start this new journey and ask for your prayers and support as we follow the guidance of the Holy Spirit. I look forward to being the hands and feet of Christ to many as I serve here at Nativity Parish.

Luke Ferris on Monday, February 20 at 6:30 PM in Bona Hall. Discussion will center on the selection of our next Pastor. Parishioner Input is Strongly Encouraged! Nativity is an Amazing Parish because of people like Bob and Rae Wetzel, who have been a face of the parish for many years. Bob and Rae have always been active in various volunteer activities around the parish by serving others and being the hands and feet of Christ in all that they do. Bob has volunteered in numerous ways over the years. Currently he is helping our parish as a Lay Minister, doing various prayer services, wakes and committals throughout the year. Bob is also a lector for weekend Masses, an instructor for the RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults) program, and is a member of the Building and Grounds Ministry. Rae and her welcoming spirit as not only a former staff member of Nativity, but is also involved in multiple ways as a volunteer. Rae, is a greeter, a member of the St. Vincent de Paul group, and enjoys baking delicious goodies for different events here at the parish. Finally, as a couple, Bob and Rae help with the parish picnic each summer. Bob and Rae do this with a kind heart and a big smile. As we recognize them for the wonderful things they do for our parish this week, please greet them with a handshake, hug and/or a smile in thanks for all that they do. Note: Nativity Parish will recognize at least one parishioner, business sponsor or member of the community each week under our Amazing Parishioners section of the bulletin, which includes uploads to our Facebook and Web page. If you have a recognition topic, please contact the Parish Office at ROSE BUD / LOVE LIFE Following each Mass this weekend there will be an opportunity to make a contribution to the Love Life program through a Reverse Collection. Love Life provides baby supplies for local families in need. Please see enclosed flyer. Nativity of Our Lord Parish 3

4 4 WORSHIP NEWS Contact: Wayne Efferson, Servant Leader , x206 or OLD PALMS from Palm Sunday Nativity of Our Lord Parish Old Palms can be brought to Church and deposited in the baskets at the entrances. Some of these will be used as ashes on Ash Wednesday. If you wish to dispose of your old palms, simply burn and bury them. PREPARING FOR LENT The Worship Ministry is asking for your assistance with our Lenten decorations by inviting you to Take a White Poinsettia Home on the weekend of February 25/26 following any of the Masses and by coming to church on Monday, February 27 (6:30 PM) to help decorate for Lent. If you can t come at night, what about during the day? Contact Wayne Efferson, Director of Worship at natwe@nativityparish.com or , x206. Your help will be greatly appreciated. ASH WEDNESDAY (MARCH 1) Ash Wednesday begins the journey of Lent in preparation of Easter. Masses will be at 8:00 AM and 6:30 PM. Also, there will be two Liturgy of the Word with the distribution of Ashes at 6:45 AM and 12:00 PM. All Liturgical Ministers are requested to assist at these liturgies. Please sign up in the Sacristy and Ushers Room. FAST AND ABSTINENCE Catholics are to keep the Lenten fast and abstinence according to the following directives: Catholics who have celebrated their 14th birthday are bound to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday, all the Fridays of Lent, and Good Friday. On these days of complete abstinence, meat or soup or gravy made from meat are not to be eaten. Catholics who have celebrated their 18th birthday, in addition to abstaining from meat, are bound to fast as well on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Fasting means eating only one full meal per day. Smaller amounts of food may be taken at two other meals, but no food should be eaten between meals. The obligation to fast ceases with the celebration of one s 59th birthday. OUR LENTEN JOURNEY On Ash Wednesday (March 1 st ) we are marked with an ashen cross on our foreheads and hear the words, Repent and believe in the gospel. This is a reminder of our dying and rising with the Lord through the waters of Baptism. Lent is a time to look within our hearts to find why we chose and continue to be a follower of Jesus. During Lent you will notice the water remaining in our Baptismal Font and in the holy water bowls at the entrances; it will serve as a reminder of our call to live our Baptismal commitments. We invite you to bless yourself with the sign of the cross as you enter/leave each liturgy. With this Water of Life, all other seasonal decorations remain simple. However, our simple Cross [the Tree of Life; more than symbol of death, but rather a place and the experience in which death is transformed into life ( beta crux, the blessed cross)] is accented with purple cloth which leads the eye to the Font. And our bare church environment conveys a sense of being emptied out and being sustained by God alone. This journey to Easter is not just for us Catholics who have received the sacraments of initiation but also for those who want to join us: the Catechumens (the un-baptized who will be fully initiated into our faith at the Easter Vigil through the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation & Holy Communion) and Candidates (baptized non-catholics who want to be fully initiated into our faith through the sacraments of Confirmation & Holy Communion); this year we have one Catechumens. It is our hope that during these 40 days each of us will be renewed in faith through the dying and rising of our Lord (the Paschal Mystery). Though the most appropriate time for Baptism is the Easter Vigil and the Easter Season until Pentecost, Baptism is also celebrated on Sundays of the year. Because the days of Holy Week, from Monday to Thursday inclusive, have precedence over all other celebrations, it is not fitting that Baptisms or Confirmations be celebrated on these days since they have their natural place in the Easter Vigil. LENTEN FASTING Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, March 1 st By itself, fasting is probably not very useful spiritually. But along with prayer, fasting can help us to recognize our deep need for God. Physical hunger can help awaken our spiritual hunger. Fasting can help us realize how attached we are to superficial comfort and pleasure, challenging us to rethink our priorities. Fasting can be an act of solidarity with those who regularly experience hunger, giving us a brief glimpse of their daily struggle. During your fasting this Lent, you might want to learn more about hunger and its causes. Here are just a few of the many web sites you could visit to learn more about or to get involved in solving the problem of hunger: America s Second Harvest Bread for the World Heifer International The Hunger Project Operation Rice Bowl Poverty.com

Vocation Day Wednesday, February 22 6:15 pm in Church For He chose us in Him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in His sight. (Ephesians 1:4) Lumen Gentium, the Dogmatic Constitution on the Church, is very clear in declaring that we are all called to holiness. Even before we were born, God has a plan for each of us. Each of us is called to live out God s plan for us. Our middle school and high school youth in Faith Formation have the opportunity to explore what is God s plan for each of them. They are open to God s call to the priesthood, diaconate, religious life, married life, single life. Nativity Vocation Day is on February 22 when we have a panel consisting of Fr. Tom Long, Deacon Steve Meyer, Sister Dorothy, Megan, Gladys Theis, Dave and Debbie Raupp. It promises to be an enlightening evening. Nativity of Our Lord Parish 5

8 Our Bishop s Appeal goal is.$86, parishioners have donated..$29, Amount needed to reach our goal...$56, Dear Friends, BISHOP S APPEAL FEBRUARY 18-19, 2017 Love Your Neighbor The Lord said to Moses, Speak to the whole Israelite community and tell them: Be holy, for I, the LORD, your God, am holy.you shall love your neighbor as yourself LV 19:1-2, It is not always easy to reach out to complete strangers. God encourages us to love our neighbors as ourselves. It is important to strengthen our communities with the love and support we would give our own families. We have many faithful volunteers in our diocese who reach out to follow parishioners in times of need. Care Ministers respond to the spiritual and emotional needs of those in our community. Becoming a Care Minister requires training, support and guidance. Your support of the Bishop s Appeal enables members in our parish to be trained as Care Ministers, and allows those hurting in our parish to receive pastoral care. If you know somebody who needs assistance in our parish or if you're interested in becoming a Care Minister, please contact the Nativity Parish Office at I would like to encourage everyone to consider helping in two ways. The first is to join me in praying for those suffering in today s world, and the second is to consider a gift to the Bishop s Appeal so more people can be trained to serve individuals struggling. Contact our office or visit the Bishop s Appeal website at: 8 Thank you and all of our religious educators for sharing the word of God with our youth.
