November 18th, 2018 Thanksgiving Designated Offering - Sanctuary Art Center We will be collecting an offering during the services for the Sunday before Thanksgiving (11/18), to go to Sanctuary Art Center. Sanctuary Art Center exists to provide homeless and street-involved youth in the University District with a space to create art in a safe, serene environment. Programs include dropin art and music studios, art education, and Pre-Vocational Internship Programs. To make a donation by check, checks should be made out to Christ Episcopal Church with "Thanksgiving Designated Offering" on the memo line; for cash donations, please use the brown envelopes in the pews and write your name (and address if we don't already have it) and "Thanksgiving Designated Offering" on the envelope. Contact the church office : Office@Christchurchseattle.org Christmas Giving Tree - Gifts for Families in Need A Christmas Giving tree has been put up in the undercroft, with ornaments for Mary's Place. These ornaments have 3 different types of gift requests - gifts for children, gifts for adults that the children get to choose and give to their parents, and donations towards new shoes. Please take an ornament, and return the unwrapped gift or donation by Sunday, Dec 2nd. For shoe donations, you can make a check out to Mary's Place, give cash (including your contact information if you would like a receipt), or you can make a donation online at with the Honoree field as "Shoes". Street Chaplaincy Street Chaplaincy is a way to follow our call in Matthew 25:37-40 to provide for the "least of these." We serve them by walking The Ave and passing out survival supplies - food, water, and other necessities. If you would like to donate, see our wish list at and if you order via smile.amazon.com, you can choose to have Amazon send a small monetary donation directly to Christ Church. Elizabeth Gregory Home Coat Drive The Elizabeth Gregory Home coat drive continues through the end of Since our clients sleep either on the streets or in unheated shelters, warm coats with hoods are in great demand. St. Mark s Thanksgiving Service There will be a Service at 10:00 AM on Thanksgiving (November 22nd) at St. Mark s Cathedral ( th AVE E. Seattle, WA 98102). Stewardship Pledge Drive update Thank you to everyone who has already turned in their pledges! After the pledge ingathering on Oct 28th, we have received enough pledges to cover about half of our 2018 budget. Obviously, we still have quite a way to go to fully cover our budget, so if you have not yet turned in your pledge, please do so as soon as possible. If you are considering increasing your pledge to help us close the gap, you can find forms for changing your pledge at the back of the sanctuary. Children s Ministry Volunteers Needed The Christmas Pageant Team is looking for two kind souls to help out with rehearsals and the evening of (Dec. 24th) to help keep us moving and make every child feel welcome, included and comfortable. Please contact Heidi Hansen at kids@christchurchseattle.org to get involved. The more the merrier, and all the more helpful! The Godly Play class is in search of a back-up Storyteller. This is a unique and profoundly encouraging way to be a part of children's spiritual journey and your own. Pastoral Care Team Seeking New Members Christ Church's Pastoral Care Teams were established in September of Since then the Teams (there are four, serving one week per month) have responded to almost 50 calls for assistance ranging from requests for prayers, phone calls and/or cards of encouragement, home visits, rides given to medical appointments, meals made and delivered, and various other tasks that lighten the load of our fellow church friends going through a challenging or rough patch in their lives. As this relatively new ministry evolves, we now find ourselves in need of more hands to do this precious and sustaining work of ministry. If you would like to participate in this ministry - or if you have any questions about how this works or what it involves, please contact Susan Folk. Meal Prep Volunteers for Catechumenate Needed Water and Fire, our catechumenate program, is in need of volunteers to help prepare a simple supper to nourish our bodies as we seek to nourish our faith. An easy soup, bread and beverage are all that s needed although fruit or veggies are always welcome. This is a quiet and lovely way to support those among us who are seeking God and discerning their place in God's church. There are folks at every gathering engaged in this journey of spiritual discovery. Soup and fixings can be left in the Undercroft refrigerator or freezer at your convenience! Commercial soup in boxes (4 boxes seem to feed us all) can be left on the counter in the Undercroft kitchen, labeled Water & Fire. Or, if your schedule allows, you are most welcome to join Lou and Sean at 4:30 to have food ready at 5 when our gatherings begin (enter at 47th street). Please e -mail Lou Cabeen if you can help. 3 Kathy Chamberlain wins Ky Chen No Problem Award In 2011, Bishop Rickel established an award to honor Ky Chen s 25 years of service, graciously and ably running the print shop at D-House. No matter how large or how last minute the request, Ky would get it done with a simple no problem, even if it meant rearranging prior plans or scrambling to get the needed supplies. He was a devoted employee whose enthusiasm and team spirit epitomized the best of any employee. The Ky Chen Employee Excellence No Problem Award recognizes outstanding lay employees from any congregation or affiliated organizations in the diocese. I was so proud this year to nominate Kathy Chamberlain for this award. Her devoted service is unprecedented in my experience in parishes, and no one deserves this award more than she does. Here is what I wrote about her, with help from several parishioners. (It was adapted for the bishop to be able to speak it in the first person from the podium at Convention.) Kathy Chamberlain, of Christ Episcopal Church in Seattle, is a gift from God. Ever since her experience with a service organization in her undergraduate life, she has been focused on generous, diligent service, to be in the place where she most devoutly seeks and finds God. Aside from being Christ Church s exemplary treasurer for 8 years, she is one of those miraculous people who both sustains our highest level conversations about mission while also being the person who is constantly getting her hands grubby pulling weeds around the church. Kathy paints the walls and convenes the Endowment Committee. She runs coaxial cables between buildings to install internet service and she is an acolyte. She climbs the 32 ladder to the rafters in the Sanctuary to replace light bulbs and she sings in the choir every week. She attended the College for Congregational Development and scrapes graffiti off the alley wall. She installs, maintains and troubleshoots the computers, internet, and copier at Christ Church. She interfaces with the bank and with vendors and manages all the HR tasks of hiring and resignations. Kathy co-ordinates the parochial report, the annual report, and the facility use report. She writes the annual budget and provides extensive and clear monthly financial reports as well as a complex one for the annual meeting. She organizes the parish audit. She always comes when we have a party. When the Rev. Shelly Fayette was new, Kathy introduced her to the neighborhood by taking her on a walking tour of the flora of the University of Washington campus. They still take that walk when there are church situations to talk out. Here is another example: when Kathy was nervous about joining the choir, she found a computer program that would let her enter the notes of her part, and have it play back to her, so she could practice at home. She could have just done this, but instead she decided to enter all the other parts and share the program, which the other choir members have loved. This is signature Kathy: to serve despite fear, to work for excellence, and always to include and share. Kathy s truest aim is to be of service. She is 100% aboveboard; she does not cut corners. She is never in it for herself, and she deflects praise. The church sees Christ shining through her. Rector s Aid Update Many thanks to all our buyers and helpers.
