3 Our Lady Queen of Peace Church, Hainesport, New Jersey Page Message from the Padre In our Gospel this weekend someone asked Jesus Lord, will only a few people be saved? Knowing that Jesus is a loving and forgiving God, we expect that he would say, Of course not all of you will be saved. But instead Jesus said: Strive to enter through the narrow gate, for many, I tell you, will attempt to enter but will not be strong enough. M y dear friends, some of you may be familiar with Dante Alighieri s novel called The Divine Comedy. This novel has three parts: the Inferno what we call (Hell), the Purgatorio or the (Purgatory) and the third part is the Paradiso that is equivalent to (Heaven). In Dante s Inferno the sign over the door to hell says, Abandon hope all ye who enter here. This is precisely the lesson of our Gospel this weekend. But the difference is before abandoning all hope, Christ is giving us a chance, to make an effort and to strive harder, because the door of God s grace, even though it is described as narrow...it is indeed open open to all who bear the name of Jesus Christ and who trust in the redemptive power of Christ. That is why Jesus calls us to be ready, to be prepared and to be vigilant. But the problem is in today s world we try to ignore God s demands as though nothing will ever happen. My brothers and sisters we cannot go through life ignoring God and expecting him to open the doors for us. The shutting of the narrow door will come one day and after the master of the house has locked the door, even if we knock and shout, he will say, as the Gospel has said I do not know where you are from. So as we continue our journey in Christ on this 21 st Sunday of Ordinary Time, let us heighten our awareness of our need to repent and change. Remember it is never too late to reconcile ourselves with Christ as the door of the Sacrament of Reconciliation is always open. If we have decided to repent and accept God s forgiveness today or tomorrow we need not fear because, as the Gospel said, even though we are LAST to be saved in God s eyes we will always be the FIRST. Both Isaiah and Jesus show us how those whom we least expect will be part of God s saving plan. How are w to fit in? Saint Paul tells us that we can start by accepting the discipline of God in our lives. Let us listen to these words of God today for the clues we need to help makes God s kingdom a reality in this world, and to be part of that kingdom ourselves. 6 Page Twenty First Sunday in Ordinary Time St. Teresa of Kolkata A Mass of Thanksgiving September 4, 2016 Catholics and all people of good will from the Diocese of Trenton are invited to join Bishop David M. O Connell, C.M., for a Mass of Thanksgiving to commemorate the canonization of Blessed Teresa of Kolkata September 4th at 11AM in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, a worship site of Mother of Mercy Parish, Asbury Park. Bishop O Connell will be principal celebrant and homilist of the Mass. Blessed Teresa will be elevated to sainthood earlier that day by Pope Francis during a Mass at the Vatican in Rome. Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church is located at 805 Pine Street, Asbury Park. For further information, contact the Office of Communications at dotcom@dioceseoftrenton.org or VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR OUR PARISH BIRDS We are looking for reliable volunteers to assist with the care of our parish birds. We have an opening on Saturdays, twice a month beginning this September. If you are willing to offer a few minutes to give our birds food and fresh water please call Carol Nasife at ext. 16. VOLUNTEER CHAPLAIN AIDES NEEDED Volunteer Chaplain Aides are needed at Virtua Memorial Hospital of Burlington County in Mt. Holly. There are openings for trained lay visitors every weekday between 9 AM and 5PM. Following the training and orientation process, an aide may donate two to four hours each week to visit patients, offering them friendship and spiritual comfort. Eucharistic Ministers are also needed seven days a week to bring Communion to Catholic patients. Marge McGinley, our Pastoral Administrator and a Chaplain at Virtua Memorial Hospital, will be one of the presenters at this workshop. The 18-hour Training Course will be offered at Virtua Memorial Hospital on Thursday and Friday, October 20 and 21, from 8 AM to 5 PM, with continental breakfast at 7:30 AM and lunch is provided.
