3 Our Lady Queen of Peace Church, Hainesport, New Jersey Page Message from the Padre O ur Sunday Gospel from Matthew gives us the Story of the Three Magi, also known as the Three Wisemen or the Three Kings who came from the East to pay homage to a Newborn King. These Three Wiseman brought royal gifts to the infant Jesus made of Gold, Frankincense and Myrrh. But the story of the Three Wisemen did not begin with gifts and presents. It all started with a STAR. The Three Wiseman choose to see the star as a sign and a calling from God. The light of the star was a symbol of hope, joy and peace. It is easy then to imagine their joy when the heavenly sign came to a stop and there at last Our Savior is born. Kneeling down they paid homage, glorified and adored this child whom we call our LORD and our GOD. My dear friends, according to our Roman Catholic tradition, this is what Epiphany means, which is the first appearance of Christ to the Gentiles in the story of the Three Wisemen. Through the birth of Jesus, we see the arrival of the Light in the world. Through the Three Magi, we see the light of hope, joy and peace to come. M y dear brothers and sisters, the Feast of the Epiphany is a reminder for all of us that we too are called to be a light in this world. Being enlightened by that guiding star and the Light of God in our hearts, we are called to go forward and to share with others the Good News of the birth of Jesus Christ... and just like the Three Wisemen, let us pay our homage... to honor him... to worship him... and to commit ourselves fully to his love and peace... today... tomorrow... and always. 4 The Epiphany of the Lord Isaiah 60: 1-6, Ephesians 3: 2-6 Matthew 2: 1-12 Listen today for just how widely God s grace has traveled. Isaiah prophesies that the light from Jerusalem will attract caravans from across land and sea. Saint Paul calls the foreign Gentiles coheirs and copartners in the body of Christ. Matthew tells of the magi journeying from a foreign country in the East. As we sing in the psalm, the glory of the Lord has spread to every nation on earth. Anointing of the Sick In the Church s Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick, through the ministry of the priest, it is Jesus who touches the sick to heal them from sin - and sometimes even from physical ailment. His cures were signs of the arrival of the Kingdom of God. The core message of his healing tells us of his plan to conquer sin and death by his dying and rising. The Rite of Anointing tells us there is no need to wait until a person is at the point of death to receive the Sacrament. A careful judgment about the serious nature of the illness is sufficient. Even if there is no physical healing, the primary effect of the Sacrament is a spiritual healing by which the sick person receives the Holy Spirit s gift of peace and courage to deal with the difficulties that accompany serious illness or the frailty of old age. LAYING OUR GIFTS AT THE FEET OF THE KING The Epiphany Evangelization - Young People That young people, especially in Latin America, follow the example of Mary and respond to the call of the Lord to communicate the joy of the Gospel to the world. We can also present him with our own royal gifts. While ours may not be actual gold, frankincense and myrrh, we can still give to him the best we have. Gold: The gift of kings, the gold we can offer the King of Kings is our talents and abilities. Like gold, our talents do the most good when given to others. Frankincense: Frankincense was used as incense during worship and symbolized the prayers offered up to God. In the time of Jesus, frankincense was used by priests whose job it was to intercede for the people. Our priestly ministry can be praying daily for those who need it, especially anyone we know who is struggling and particularly in need of strength and comfort. Myrrh: A spice used to ease suffering, myrrh was a valuable gift. Mother Teresa once said, I serve because I love Jesus. Our kindness can be our myrrh offered to God - a valuable gift.
