3 Our Lady Queen of Peace Church, Hainesport, New Jersey Page A Message from the Padre In our Gospel this weekend, the Pharisees are accusing Jesus and his disciples of being less righteous by not keeping the traditions of washing their hands before meals. So they question Jesus, Why do your disciples not follow the tradition of the elders. My dear friends, sometimes we are like the Pharisees and the scribes who are critical of so many things. If it appears holy, then it must be right. But that is not always the case. There are things that may look holy and may be pleasing to our eyes, or may move people s hearts, but it can also be just another sumptuous display of piety that appears holy to men but not pleasing to God. Remember what Saint Paul said, These things have the appearance of wisdom in promoting self-made religion but they have no value in the eyes of God. My brothers and sisters, the real question we need to ask about religious rituals, devotions and practices is, "Is it of God s desire or is it of man s selfish desire?" We need to remember and consider that our Catholic faith has inherited over two thousand years of devotions and traditions. Traditions and devotions are not a bad thing. They can have great value. But the problem comes when traditions and devotions become masters rather than servants of the Word of God this echoes our Gospel this weekend when Jesus said, You honor me with your lips, but your hearts are far from me and you do many such things. Yes, we too are guilty like the Pharisees because we do many such things. Many times we honor God with our lips and not with our hearts. We praise God with words but not in deeds. Yes, our words are important but words are empty if they don t come from our heart remember that God will judge us not by what we have said but what we have done and what lies inside our hearts. Fr. Joe Stewardship of Treasure Parish Offering: August 23, 2014 Weekly Collection $ 6, Misc. Second Collections E-giving 1, Total $ 8, We make a living by what we earn. We make a life by what we share. Thank you for your generous support of our parish Please remember Our Lady Queen of Peace Parish in your Will as a lasting and loving gift to your parish community! Thank you! Lord God, Almighty Father, creator of mankind and author of peace, as we are ever mindful of the cost paid for the liberty we possess, we ask you to bless the members of our armed forces. Give them courage, hope and strength. May they ever experience your firm support, gentle love and compassionate healing. Be their power and protector, leading them from darkness to light. To you be all glory, honor and praise, now and forever. Amen Please pray for the men and women now serving in the military, especially the loved ones of our parishioners: Scott Shaffer Kyle Shaffer Joel A. DeLuca Daryl and Adam Caufield Michael Blaser Kenneth Fama Chris and Amy Price Megan Cobb PRAYERS FOR OUR MILITARY FAMILY The safety and success of our military serving at home and abroad defending our country should be prayed for daily. All should be recognized for their outstanding commitment to risk their lives so we can remain free. Members of our parish family are requested to provide the names of their loved ones so they can be remembered in our prayers. To include their names in our prayer list please contact Carol Nasife by at carol@olqponline.org or by calling ext. 16.
4 Page The Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time The Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time Mark 7: 1-8, 14-15, Summer Mass Schedule Saturday Evening: 4:30 p.m. Sunday: 7:30 a.m., 9:00 a.m., 11:00 a.m. What an interesting juxtaposition between the first reading and Gospel today! Moses is telling the people of the importance of the law that he is teaching them, that following it marks them as wise and intelligent. Jesus harshly criticizes the Pharisees and scribes for following the letter of that same law! They have not grasped the spirit of that law, so their observation of it is empty. As we hear these words proclaimed today, what can they tell us about how we follow God s commands? Daily Mass: 9:00 a.m. Reconciliation: Saturday 3:45-4:15 p.m. READINGS FOR THE WEEK Sunday: Dt 4: 1-2, 6-8, Jas 1: Jas 21b-22, 27 Mk 7: 1-8, 14-15, Monday: 1 Thes 4: 13-18, Lk 4: Tuesday: 1 Thes 5: 1-6, 9-11, Lk 4: Wednesday: Col 1: 1-8, Lk 4: Thursday: Col 1: Lk 5: 1-11 Friday: Col 1: 15-20, Lk 5: Saturday: Col 1: 21-23, Lk 6: 1-5 The Holy Father s Prayer Intentions August 2015 Universal: Volunteers - That volunteers may give themselves generously to the service of the needy. For Evangelization: Outreach to the marginalized That setting aside our very selves we may learn to be neighbors to those who find themselves on the margins of human life and society. 6 The Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time Page The Marianist Family Retreat Center 517 Yale Ave., Cape May Point, NJ September Celebration of Marriage Retreat World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation The Catholic faithful and all people of good will throughout the Diocese of Trenton are invited to take part in the local observance of the newly-designated World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation Tuesday, September 1. On that day, Bishop David M. O Connell, C.M., will celebrate Mass at 7:30 PM in Our Lady Star of the Sea Chapel of St. Denis Parish - the Beach Chapel at 554 E. Main St., Manasquan. Expanding on the theme of his most recent encyclical, Laudato Si, on Care for Our Common Home, Pope Francis announced the new, worldwide commemoration to be celebrated annually on September 1. In announcing the Diocese s observance, Bishop O Connell said, Thanks to the gracious hospitality of Father William Lago, pastor of St. Denis Parish, we are able to commemorate this inaugural event in their beautiful chapel. It will be an appropriate setting for this Mass - sunset at the Jersey shore - and a dramatic reminder of the beautiful gift of creation that we are called to protect. All are encouraged to join in the worldwide day of prayer, either by attending the diocesan Mass or in their personal prayers. Priests of the Diocese are invited to concelebrate. EXPERIENCE THE TOUCH OF GOD HEALING MASS Friday, September 4, 2015 St. John Neumann Church 560 Walton Avenue Mt. Laurel, NJ Holy Hour 7 PM to 8 PM Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, Prayer to the Sacred Heart, Recitation of the Chaplet of Divine Mercy, and the Rosary. Mass will begin at 8 PM with our celebrant: Father Michael Manion This weekend is intended for couples married at least 10 years. It honors and celebrates the commitment of marriage. We strike a deliberate balance among participation/reflection, liturgy, free time, fun activities and plenty of couple time for walks on the nearby beaches. Cost: $260 per couple (includes all meals, room, program, etc.) Sign up online at or call for more information. How does God call us? A Vocation Discernment Group Meeting is a wonderful opportunity to share how God is calling us to serve in His Church. In these sessions we talk about the issues that affect our vocation: How does God call us? How can I know where God wants me to serve Him? What is the life of priestly ministry? What are the qualities that make a holy priest? What is the formation process like? Through prayer, experience, and a strong dedication to one s spiritual life, discernment emerges as a gift from God, leading us in the right direction. You are invited to share your journey with us in these discernment group meetings. Our next meeting will be held on September 20th, at St. Pio of Pietrelcina, 103 Washington Ave., Lavallette, NJ, 08735, from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM, hosted by pastor, Rev. Msgr. Leonard Troiano. The time will include prayer, sharing discernment stories, Q and A and a light meal. The meetings are a wonderful experience as you discover and respond to His invitation and serve the Church in His priesthood.
