Saint John the Baptist commands our interest because he is a witness of Christ. His witness as we have heard in our Gospel this weekend starts with his birth. Yes, upon his birth, he was given not his fathers name but rather the name, John, which is translated "God is gracious." As an adult, his chosen surroundings bear witness to a different reality, he lives in the desert and he totally separates himself from the world. Within his solitude, he is able to hear the voice of God. John s manner of dressing bears witness as well. Through his garment of camel's hair, John shows how important it is to be simple and to be detached from the things of this world. John's food also bears witness. The Gospels tell us that he eats locusts and wild honey. Like his living conditions and his dress, his food is also simple. Yes, John is not only a witness but he also preaches a message of truth. His beliefs and his actions are one and the same and he proclaims the truth as he prepares the way of the Lord. Message from the Padre My dear friends, St. John the Baptist s behavior is difficult to understand and perhaps even to relate to, but his life is very relevant for us today. John the Baptist is still relevant for us because we need someone who speaks not only about the truth, but who is also not afraid to tell the truth. Like John the Baptist, each one of us must not be afraid in what we believe as Christians. Like John the Baptist, we too must be counter-cultural in terms of the values we formulate and by which we live. We must take the truth as our guiding principle, the truth that is rooted in God s Word and will. Lastly we must be counter-cultural in terms of being genuinely Christian in all our life. Yes we are all called and challenged to declare by the life-style we fashion, by the values we formulate and by the self-identity we reflect in the name of Jesus Our Lord. And so this week, let us reflect on the life of St. John the Baptist and not to be afraid to speak out the truth. Let us pray for the strength to prepare the way of the Lord in peace, justice and truth. Have circumstances prevented you from receiving your Sacraments? While still in the womb, John the Baptist was called to prepare the people for the coming of the Lord. We hear today from Jeremiah or Isaiah, two prophets also called by the Lord before they were born. We ourselves were not called by God in such a dramatic way. Yet by virtue of our baptism, each of us also shares in Christ s prophetic and salvific mission. As we listen to the readings today, let us think about how we have been called. Baptismal Preparation Class We offer a Baptismal Preparation Class for parents as a way of preparing them for their child s journey of faith. All parents planning to have their first child baptized are required to attend a class before the Baptism may be scheduled. Once the Baptismal Preparation class is attended, the form completed and the Godparents Eligibility Certificates are turned in, a date for your child s Baptism will be set. To register for this class, please contact Carol at the Parish Office ext. 16 Marriage Engaged couples are required to make arrangements with the Parish at least one year in advance of the planned wedding date and before finalizing any social plans. Please come to the Religious Education Office to pick up your registration forms. Requirements: Must be six years old Must be a registered member of our parish A copy of Baptismal Certificate All returning students must have their completed registration forms returned to the Religious Education Office no later then Thursday, June 28th. For additional information call Mrs. Fama at extension 20. OUR LADY QUEEN OF PEACE MEMORIAL GARDEN If you have not purchased a brick paver we are still taking orders. The cost of each brick with your personal message and a symbol is $125. Proceeds will be used to support the life and ministry of our parish. RELIGIOUS EDUCATION TEACHERS NEEDED We are looking for Religious Education Teachers to help us on Tuesday evenings from 5:00 PM to 6:15 PM at the Hainesport School.
