3 Our Lady Queen of Peace Church, Hainesport, New Jersey Page Message from the Padre O ur Gospel this weekend is about the story of the rich man and poor Lazarus. This rich man had everything a man could desire on earth and he had his heart so set on his wealth that he forgot about God and was totally insensitive to the needs of Lazarus. When he died, none of the things he treasured could help and defend him during judgment day. Our Second Reading this weekend echoes this sentiment when St. Paul said that there is going to be an appointed time in our life when God is going to ask us if we have pursued righteousness if we have kept God s commandment without stain if we have competed well for the faith and finished the race with love, patience and gentleness in our heart, especially for the poor. M y dear friends, the need to care for the poor and the needy is a constant theme in all Gospels. This theme is first established when Mary the Mother of God proclaims in The Magnificat - He has filled the hungry with good things but has sent the rich away empty." Today these words echo our Gospel about the rich man who disregards Lazarus. We have to realize that this parable has nothing to do with wealth and poverty. This parable story simply states that our reward in heaven has to do with how we handle our richness and the means of how we dispose of our wealth here on earth. M y dear friends, we have to remember that our dependence on God entails an obligation to care for our brothers and sisters, especially those who are in need. The relevance of this story today is revealed in the five brothers who were left behind, because these five brothers who were left behind are us. There is going to be a time in our life when God is going to ask us: What are we doing with the Lazarus of the world? Do we take notice of their needs or do we ignore them? Do we take into account that they are also like us, humans with dignity? Or do we feed them like dogs with the scraps of food that fell from our table? My dear friends, the purpose of this parable is not to describe the comfort of heaven and the scorching fire of hell.nor is the purpose of this parable to say that the rich will go to the scorching fires of hell and the poor will go to heaven. T he real purpose of this parable is to be aware of the needs of those who are in the margin of our society. Remember the sin of the rich man was not the sin of commission, but it was the sin of omission. It is not about what he did but it is about what he didn t do. So, as we move on to another week let us open our eyes to the real Lazarus of the world and touch their wounds and feel their pain...and ask ourselves, What have we done for the Lazarus of the world? And lastly, ask the question - Have we done enough? Fr. He didn t even know Lazarus existed. That was his problem. His sin was not in directly causing the suffering of another, it was in overlooking and ignoring his suffering. For us in our consumer culture today, this is an easy trap to fall into. As we listen to these readings today, what do they tell us about how to avoid that trap? 6 Page Twenty Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time Altar Rosary Society We would like to take a moment to thank Mike Whelan for the great job he did pruning the hedges on our church grounds. Mike, its parishioners like you that make our grounds look so beautiful. The month of October is traditionally dedicated to the Rosary. The Altar Rosary Society will be praying the Novena to Our Lady of the Holy Rosary, which begins Wednesday, September 28th, and ends on Friday, October 7th, on the Feast of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary. Please join us in prayer. The next meeting of the Altar Rosary Society will be held on Tuesday, October 4th at 7 PM in the Parish Hall. All are welcome to attend. CALLING ALL BOY SCOUTS!
