3 Our Lady Queen of Peace Church, Hainesport, New Jersey Page Message from the Padre O ur Gospel this weekend speaks to each one of us on how to respond to Jesus important question, Who do you say that I am? It seems like a simple question, but certainly not an easy one to answer. According to his disciples he is John the Baptist, others Elijah and some say he is a prophet. But Peter said something that captured the heart of Jesus. He said, You are the Christ. But Peter s response was not enough. Yes, Peter mentioned the important aspect of Jesus mission as the Christ, or the anointed one, but nothing really captures how Jesus understands himself and that he must suffer greatly and be rejected by the elders, and be killed, and rise after three days. Y es, Christ s self-image of suffering and dying did not sit well with Peter. For this he was criticized harshly by Christ, with the words Get behind me, Satan! To most of us, these words seem cruel and insensitive as our ears always gravitate to the word Satan. Besides the word Satan, Jesus also commands Peter to Get behind him. To get behind, means not to lead, but to follow. To get behind means to surrender his own plans to God s plans. He is reminding Peter that he is called to be the disciple and not to be the master. This is probably not what Peter expected when he decided to follow Jesus. So Jesus explained to Peter what it means to be a disciple. He said: Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross and follow me. My dear friends, sometimes our problem is like Peter s. We want Christ to follow us instead of us following Him. S o, on this Twenty-Fourth Week in Ordinary Time, we are invited to answer the same question Jesus gave to his disciples, Who do you say that I am? We know now that there are many ways to answer this question. But the best answer comes not only from saying, but also by accepting and believing that Jesus is indeed the Christ who suffered and died for us, and who is the same today as He was yesterday, and He will be the same until the end of time. 4 Twenty-Fourth Sunday In Ordinary Time Twenty-Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time Isaiah 50: 4c-9a, James 2: Mark 8: Today s readings are challenging. Isaiah accepts God s call to prophecy, but he suffers terribly at the hands of his persecutors. Saint James insists that Christians are obligated to put their faith into action, clothing and feeding the needy. In the Gospel, Jesus tells his disciples, Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me. As we listen to the readings, let us reflect on how we take up our cross and put our faith into action. There will be delicious Italian Food, Vino, Beer, Vendors, (NEW) a Moon Bounce for the children and more. Our celebration starts with the 4:30 Mass followed by a procession of our favorite Italian Saints. We will have live entertainment by The Smooth Sounds of Steve Silicato a popular singer who has performed at restaurants and clubs at the Jersey Shore, Delaware Beaches as well as various venues and Italian Festivals in the Philadelphia and Tri-State area. His Smooth Sounds include Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra, Bobbie Darin, Tony Bennett, Louie Prima, Frankie Valli, The Temptations and many more. We will be selling advance tickets for food and beverages after all Masses the weekend s of September 23/24 and September 29/30. The Social Concerns Committee is asking you to consider putting together a Thanksgiving basket/dinner for a needy family. We also have families with a pet or pets that need our help. As you shop for your own Thanksgiving dinner, please shop for the other family too. When you are finished, please pack the ingredients of the Thanksgiving meal, with all the trimmings in a basket or container.
