3 Page Our Lady Queen of Peace Church, Hainesport, New Jersey Message from the Padre Fifty days after Christ s Resurrection, Jesus poured out his Holy Spirit upon his apostles and the Church celebrates this with the Feast of PENTECOST which marks the birth of the Christian Church by the power of the Holy Spirit. Pentecost always gives us an image of a church filled with red vestments, with the symbol of a dove as a sign of the Holy Spirit and choirs singing Spirit songs. But the first Pentecost was certainly not so festive. It was a day surrounded by fear and confusion. The disciples were afraid, hiding and frightened at the same time ashamed because they had run away at the crucifixion. But the very first thing Jesus did when he showed up to the first disciples was to give a greeting of peace. He said: "Peace be with you. Y es, Jesus said - Peace be with you. His first desire for them is to restore peace. It is the same desire for us to have Peace. peace in our lives, in our family, in our parish and also in this world. But after more than two thousand years after Pentecost, I m not so sure if we ve done a good job of spreading this word. I m not speaking only of the absence of war. There are also the countless conflicts and senseless fights in our daily lives between husbands and wives between parents and children between neighbors co-workers and even between members of the church. My dear friends, I know these may sound cliché but how often do we say to people: Peace be with you. How often do we make peace our mission? How often do we strive to be Christ like to other? How many times did we bring peace to those who do not understand or those with whom we disagree? In times of rage, how often do we step back and think of peace instead of just lashing out in anger? Yes, history shows us that the world has known and heard about Peace but has not learned what the true meaning of peace is. M y dear brothers and sisters, we live in a time that calls for public witness. Every Christian has the responsibility to bring peace into this world. We have to remember that peace only preaches if we truly practice it. So, on this Most Holy Day of Pentecost, let us thank the Father and the Son for the gift of the Holy Spirit and lastly, let us pray, the prayer to the Holy Spirit: Come, Holy Spirit, Fill the Hearts of your faithful and kindle in them the fire of your love and send out your Spirit, and renew the face of the earth. 4 Pentecost Sunday Who is the Holy Spirit? Pentecost Sunday Acts 2: Corinthians 12: 3b-7, John 20: As we prepare to hear God s holy word today, let us listen to these stories of the movement of the Spirit in the early Church and reflect on how they tell our own story as well. Then let us make our own the words of the Pentecost Sequence Come, Holy Spirit, come! Readings and Gospel for the Week 1st Reading 2nd Reading Page Gospel Sunday: Acts 2: Cor 12: 3b-7 Jn 20: Monday: Tb 1: 3; 2: 1b-8 Mk 12: 1-12 Tuesday: Tb 2: 9-14 Mk 12: Wednesday: Tb 3: 1-11a Mk 12: The Holy Spirit is the third person of the Blessed Trinity and has the same majesty as the Father and the Son. At the Last Supper, Jesus told his disciples about the coming of the Holy Spirit, who would remind them of Christ s teachings and continue to lead them to all truth. The Advocate, the Holy Spirit that the Father will send in my name he will teach you everything and remind you of all that (I) told you (John 14:26). As Jesus promised, the Holy Spirit descended on the Church at Pentecost and has continued to guide the Church ever since. To be in touch with Christ, we must first have been touched by the Holy Spirit. He comes to meet us and kindles faith in us (CCC #683). God sends the Spirit into our hearts and makes us his children (Galatians 4:6). We first receive the Holy Spirit at our Baptism and His presence in our souls is strengthened at Confirmation. To guide us in our spiritual growth, the Holy Spirit offers us gifts of sanctifying grace. These gifts perfect basic virtues that will lead us to Heaven. When properly used, we stay focused on God. These gifts are Wisdom, Understanding, Counsel, Fortitude, Knowledge, Piety and Fear of the Lord. Accepting these gifts means identifying and using them. Baptismal Preparation Class We offer a Baptismal Preparation Class for parents as a way of preparing them for their child s journey of faith. All parents planning to have their first child baptized are required to attend a class before the Baptism may be scheduled. Once the Baptismal Preparation class is attended, the forms completed and the Godparents Eligibility Certificates are turned in, a date for your child s Baptism will be set. To register for this class, please contact Carol at the Parish Office ext. 16. Marriage Engaged couples are required to make arrangements with the Parish at least one year in advance of the planned wedding date and before finalizing any social plans. RELIGIOUS EDUCATION REGISTRATION for If you have not registered your child for Religious Education classes for the school year, it is important that you register your children now!.
