3 Our Lady Queen of Peace Church, Hainesport, New Jersey Page Message from the Padre This weekend we are celebrating the Feast of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph. The main purpose of this Feast is to present the Holy Family as the model for all Christian families. It is intended to help us re-focus our minds and affirm our belief in the Holy Family of Our Lord, Jesus Christ. M y dear brothers and sisters, God could not make a stronger statement to declare that all human families are intended to be good and holy, even if it is marked in today s world by considerable challenges and difficulties of life. Y es, all of us have the God-given potential to emulate the holiness of the Holy Family! Each one of us is called in our respective vocations to seek and to know the importance of the family and the values and responsibilites it carries. We all know that to be parents in this new millennium is not easy. That is why the Church celebrates the Holy Family of Jesus as a model for us to emulate. We must remember that Mary and Joseph, including Jesus, were just as human as we are. They too experienced many of the challenges we experience. But in spite of their problems, the Holy Family made it through the difficulties of family life and how did they do it? They had great faith and obedience to God s will, and we too are called to the same. A s we celebrate today's feast, let us pray for one another, our families, our nation and our parish family as well. May the peace of Christ control our hearts so that we may see the face of Christ in everything we do this coming New Year. 4 The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph 1 Samuel , 1 Jn 3: 1-24 Luke 2: Luke narrates the episode of the adolescent Jesus staying behind in the temple, causing his parents terrible anxiety when they realize he s missing. Parents can certainly appreciate their distress, and then their relief. One of the possible first readings features another incident in the temple. Hannah, thankful to the Lord for the birth of her son, Samuel, after years of childlessness, dedicates him to the Lord s service. Samuel and Jesus both feel at home in the Lord s house. May we as well. Anointing of the Sick In the Church s Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick, through the ministry of the priest, it is Jesus who touches the sick to heal them from sin - and sometimes even from physical ailment. His cures were signs of the arrival of the Kingdom of God. The core message of his healing tells us of his plan to conquer sin and death by his dying and rising. The Rite of Anointing tells us there is no need to wait until a person is at the point of death to receive the Sacrament. A careful judgment about the serious nature of the illness is sufficient. Even if there is no physical healing, the primary effect of the Sacrament is a spiritual healing by which the sick person receives the Holy Spirit s gift of peace and courage to deal with the difficulties that accompany serious illness or the frailty of old age.
