3 Our Lady Queen of Peace Church, Hainesport, New Jersey Page Message from the Padre In everyone s life there is that once in a lifetime opportunity that we just could not pass up. Such a moment came from a beggar who was blind named Bartimaeus who had heard of Jesus fame for healing. One day when Jesus came to Jericho, he tried to call his name in spite of the crowd s opposition. But Bartimaeus overpowered them by shouting persistently, Jesus, Son of David, have pity on me! Jesus could have ignored him, but this man was determined to get Jesus' attention. His persistence in the face of all opposition paid off. With his faith, trust and perseverance, Jesus finally granted him physical sight and commended him by saying, Your faith has healed you." This week, let us call to mind Bartimaeus perseverance. Yes, we live in a world of self-efficiency and independence and many think that to admit one s weakness is a sign of failure. Many of us would rather be blind than to see and change. Many of us would rather beg than to call on God s name. Yes, Jesus could have come and gone that day in Jericho without noticing Bartimaeus, but Bartimaeus called out and was rewarded with sight for his courage and faith. Today, let us call to mind Bartimaeus perseverance. Yes, we live in a world of selfsufficiency and independence, and many think that to admit one s weakness is a sign of failure. Many of us would rather be blind than to see and change. Many of us would rather beg than to call on God s name. My dear friends, there are no limits on what we can do. As we move on with our journey in Christ, do not let Jesus pass by you and do nothing. Call on his name like what Bartimaeus did. Yes, do something with your own blindness before it s too late and say Lord Jesus, help me that my heart can see what my eyes cannot see. Fr. 4 Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time Jeremiah 31: 7-9, Hebrews 5: 1-6 Mark 10: In the first reading today, Jeremiah recounts how God has gathered together the people of Israel. God rescues the most vulnerable: the blind...the lame...mothers...those with child. All are brought to safety in the Lord. God smoothes their path and quenches their thirst. God guides them and consoles them. Rejoice! As we look around today, note how God has gathered all of us together. The New Jersey Assembly is scheduled to vote on bill A1504 October 29th which will open the path for Senate and Governor approval of state-funded and approved ending life of a terminally ill citizen. Any form of suicide is against both natural law and the commandments of God. You can learn about this proposal and its many serious unintended consequences by looking at what the NJ Catholic bishops think about it and then forwarding your comments to your local state lawmakers. I am Julia Testa, a parishioner of Our Lady Queen of Peace and a sophomore at St. Joseph s University. This past January, I went on a service immersion trip to Guatemala through my school s Winter Immersion Program (WIP). During my time there in Guatemala, I was able to live out a faith that does justice by meeting the people of Guatemala and learning about their lives. This January I will be traveling to Ecuador. I will be going to Rostro de Cristo (the face of Christ) where I will be partaking in a ministry of presence. I will be learning about the people of Ecuador, and literally walking a mile in their shoes. There, I will be challenged to see the face of God in those who I will be spending time with.
