It is the beginning of the season in which Christians throughout the whole world prepare for the celebration of the birth of our Lord Jesus. Yes, Advent is a season of preparation, of waiting, and of hope that prepares us to welcome the mystery of the Word Incarnate. W e have to remember that the Church sets aside the Season of Advent each year for the expectancy of the Messiah, by sharing and preparing in two ways: first for the birth and coming of Jesus in a manger and secondly is the desire for His glorious Second Coming." This means that Advent is not just a preparation for the birth of Christ, but it is also a time to look for the glorious return of the Lord. M y dear friends, on this, the first candle on the Advent Wreath is lit to signify our Hope in the coming of Christ. As we light the first candle on the Advent Wreath, we are called not only to remember our Hope in the coming of Christ, but also to ask the Lord to renew the gift of hope for those who are sick, who are struggling financially and who are lost in the darkness of sin. Lastly, may we ask for the light of Christ s hope to be upon us so that we can bring the light of hope to those who are lost and are in need of our help. How should we prepare for this day that Luke calls an assault? Saint Paul s words to the Thessalonians are no less apt today than they were then: Conduct yourselves to please God. Begin a Nativity Scene Page OUR LADY QUEEN OF PEACE GIVING TREE 2018 December 1st As a parish, we celebrate the Birth of Jesus by sharing with others through our annual Giving Tree. This weekend we invite you to join us in this joy-filled project by purchasing items indicated on the ornaments you chose from the Giving Tree.. Please return the gift wrapped or placed in a gift bag with the ornament securely taped to the outside of the package. Please make sure all gifts are NEW, with no ribbons or bows on the package. A Nativity Scene is a visual reminder that the Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us (John 1: 14). Also known as a crèche, we think the custom of displaying the Nativity Scene began with St. Francis of Assisi as a way to illustrate the humility of Jesus birth. To imitate his lesson, set out an empty stable and manger. Each week add figures; livestock, Mary, Joseph, shepherds and angels. On Christmas morning, place the Baby in the manager. Please return your gift as soon as possible to the Parish Hall no later than 12:00 PM on December 9th. The Advent Wreath Mrs. Claus is not making breakfast again this year. So Mr. and Mrs. Clause would like to invite you for lunch on Sunday, December 16th from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM. LUNCH WITH SANTA Menu Hot Dogs and Pizza Cupcakes and Drinks Traditionally, Advent wreaths are constructed of a circle of evergreen branches into which four candles are inserted, representing the four weeks of Advent. Ideally, three candles are purple and one is rose, but white candles can also be used. The purple candles symbolize the prayer, penance, and preparatory sacrifices and good works undertaken at this time. The rose candle is lit on the third Sunday, also known as Gaudete Sunday when the priest wears rose vestments during Mass. Gaudete Sunday is the Sunday of rejoicing, because we are at the midpoint of Advent, when our preparations are half over and we are close to Christmas. Tickets will be available the weekends of December 1/2 and 8/9. Adults - $5 Children - Free Mighty Junior Youth Group The progressive lighting of the candles symbolizes the expectation and hope surrounding our Lord s first coming into the world and the anticipation of his second coming to judge the living and the dead. Prayer for Lighting The First Advent Candle In the darkness we light a flame of hope. May it shine not only upon our Advent Wreath but within each of our hearts as well. Hope is the flower that blooms from the ground of faith. And so with joy we keep the tradition of ages past as we encircle our Advent Wreath with love and prayerful expectation. May this Advent Season bring us a new birth of hope in the ancient promises of God. Amen. Christmas Caroling at the Masonic Village in Burlington December 15th The Mighty Junior Youth Group and their parents invite you to join them on Saturday, December 15th in the Parish Hall at 9:00 AM for a short practice before proceeding to the Masonic Village in Burlington. Parents will be responsible for driving their children to the Masonic Village. If you would like to join us please call Mrs. Fama at ext. 20 no later than Thursday, December 13th.
