3 Our Lady Queen of Peace Church, Hainesport, New Jersey Page Message from the Padre I n our Gospel this weekend, Jesus was invited to read at the synagogue on the Sabbath Day. Whether it was the assigned passage for the day, or it was Jesus favorite passage, we do not know for sure, but what we do know is that he read the words of the prophet Isaiah from Chapter 61, proclaiming: The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring glad tidings to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, and to proclaim a year acceptable to the Lord. By quoting Isaiah Chapter 61, Jesus states the theme of his mission that is: he is going to be the servant to the poor... and to proclaim the year of the Lord s favor. My dear friends, the year of the Lord's favor is often understood as referring to the Year of Jubilee, the 50th year after seven Sabbath years. This was a year of forgiving debts, freeing slaves, and restoring relationships. This is the dawning of the new age and the long-awaited fulfillment of the scriptures. Y es, Jesus mission is to announce liberty to the "poor," "the captives," the "blind," and the oppressed." Today, this message is ours to receive and to proclaim. This message does not stop with Jesus words, but continues through us. As Disciples of Christ and as children of God, Jesus mission lives in us. As our Gospel has said Today this Scripture passage is fulfilled in your hearing. Yes, all of us have heard Jesus words, now is the time for us to fulfill what we have heard both in words and in deeds. Today he begins his ministry in Luke s Gospel by preaching at his synagogue in Nazareth. Ironically, the passage he was to read summed up his mission. Today, Jesus said, this Scripture passage is fulfilled in your hearing. Today, as members of the Body of Christ, we are called to continue to fulfill Christ s mission. SUPER BOWL HOAGIE SALE Foot Long Hoagie for $10.00 World Day of the Sick February 11th is World Day of the Sick, an observation started by Saint Pope John Paul II as a way to offer prayers for those suffering from illnesses. The day coincides with the commemoration of the Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes. People around the world take the time to pray for the sick and for those who work to alleviate the sufferings of the sick. We will be offering the Anointing of the Sick on: Saturday, February 10th after 4:30 Mass Sunday, February 11th after 10:30 Mass Sunday, February 11th after 12:00 Mass Choices are: Roast Beef, Ham, Turkey all with cheese and Italian Side Choices: Sweet Peppers and Sliced Pickles Orders with payment will be taken after all Masses this weekend January 26/27. 6 Page Respect Life News Burlington County Diocesan Respect Life Committee The New Jersey Assembly is scheduled to vote in late January on Bill A 1504 which would legalize doctor assisted suicide. As Catholics we believe that any form of suicide is against both God s commandments and natural law. You can learn about this proposal and its many serious unintended consequences by looking at what the NJ Catholic bishops think about it and then forwarding your comments to your local state lawmakers.
