3 Our Lady Queen of Peace Church, Hainesport, New Jersey Page Message from the Padre I n our Gospel this weekend, the apostles were arguing among themselves, Who s the greatest? Jesus response to his apostles was, If anyone wishes to be first, he shall be the last of all and the servant of all. Like the twelve apostles, we find this teaching hard to understand. The reason for this is that we all want to be first and achieve greatness in our lives. Believe it or not, Jesus wants us all to achieve greatness, but greatness in a very different way. Jesus greatness has three big challenges and if you want to be great then they are: 1) You must put yourself last. 2) You must be the servant of all. 3) You must receive the poor and the needy with great love. T hese are the must do s and what it means to be great in the name of Jesus. To explain it in simple words: we should not strive to get ahead of one another, be superior to others or to outdo one another. Jesus wants us to serve one another and to be servant of all. Y es, our Gospel today reminds us of the dangers of ambition, greed and positions of power. That is why Jesus placed a child to stand in our midst to show us what true greatness is all about, because a child is powerless and his/her greatness comes from his/her obedience to his father and mother. Just like Jesus, his greatness has nothing to do with his power, but through his willingness to do the will of his Father. Jesus said in the Gospel of John, I came down from heaven, not to do my own will, but the will of my father. T his weekend, Christ is reminding us that true greatness is to be like Jesus who valued himself not because of his authority and power, but because of his willingness to do the will of God, including dying on the cross. True greatness for Christ is to be like a child, always dependent on his father and lastly, true greatness for Christ, does not mean honor, position or prestige, but putting yourself last and be a servant of all as God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble. 4 Page Twenty-Fifth Sunday In Ordinary Time Twenty-Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time Wisdom 2: 12, 17-20, James 3: 16-4:3 Mark 9: The Parishioners of Our Lady Queen of Peace Welcomes.. Saint James warns us of the dangers of jealousy and selfish ambition. We see the destructive effects of these desires in the first reading, when the wicked ones plot against the just one. Even the disciples fall to this temptation, arguing about who was the greatest among them. Jesus ends the argument by telling them that whoever wishes to be first must make themselves the servant of all. Let us reflect on how we can resist jealousy and serve others as Jesus asks. There will be delicious Italian Food, Vino, Beer, Vendors, (NEW) a Moon Bounce for the children and more. Our celebration starts with the 4:30 Mass followed by a procession of our favorite Italian Saints. We will have live entertainment by The Smooth Sounds of Steve Silicato a popular singer who has performed at restaurants and clubs at the Jersey Shore, Delaware Beaches as well as various venues and Italian Festivals in the Philadelphia and Tri-State area. His Smooth Sounds include Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra, Bobbie Darin, Tony Bennett, Louie Prima, Frankie Valli, The Temptations and many more. The Social Concerns Committee is asking you to consider putting together a Thanksgiving basket/dinner for a needy family. We also have families with a pet or pets that need our help. As you shop for your own Thanksgiving dinner, please shop for the other family too. When you are finished, please pack the ingredients of the Thanksgiving meal, with all the trimmings in a basket or container.
