2 ST. ELIZABETH CATHOLIC PARISH 2 JANUARY 4, 2015 TODAY S SCRIPTURE REFLECTION Epiphany of the Lord Throughout Germany and Poland at this time of year, you will find most main doorways inscribed with the following: 20+C+M+B+15. The 20 and 15 refer to the year, the CMB are said to represent either Caspar, Melchior, and Balthasar-the Magior the Latin Christus Mansionem Benedicat, which means "Christ, bless this home." Today, we celebrate the feast of the Epiphany, in which we remember the adoration of the newborn Christ by three wise men from the East. This should leave no doubt in anyone's mind just how far and wide the promise of a Savior had spread. These representatives of pagan religions from other lands were determined to pay their respects; it was as if they were born to do this-to acknowledge in some way the beginning of the greatest reign of the greatest king of all. The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches us that the Epiphany is the manifestation of Jesus as Messiah of Israel, Son of God and savior of the world (CCC 528). In the three wise men from different lands and different religions, we understand that in Jesus Christ, all are called to Him. The Epiphany is the third manifestation of the mystery of the Incarnation, following the Annunciation and the birth of Christ. Today is truly the beginning of the paschal mystery. Liturgical Publications Inc When Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, in the days of King Herod, behold, magi from the east arrived in Jerusalem, saying, Where is the newborn king of the Jews? We saw his star at its rising and have come to do him homage. - Mt 2:1-2 Are you considering serving the Church as an Ordained Deacon? The Church calls men to be deacons in-service to the People of God. If you are a man (married or single) that feels this call and wants to know more, please contact the Office for Diaconate Formation at or maldonadom@archmil.org. OUR CATHOLIC FAITH APOLOGETICS To defend and explain the teachings, beliefs, and practices of the Catholic Church Q- Did Jesus have a last name? A- This is actually a very interesting question. When we refer to Jesus as Christ, we are simply affirming that Jesus is the Christ, or Messiah. (Christos is the Greek form of the Hebrew Messiah, meaning anointed one. ) Use of family (or last ) names is a relatively new phenomenon, dating back only 400 or 500 years. Up to that time, people lived in small towns or in rural areas and generally went by first names only. This was the case in Jesus time. Often, a person s town name was added to clarify who was being spoken about e.g., Jesus of Nazareth, Joseph of Arimathea, Simon the Cyrenean, etc. Modern names such as Johnson and Jackson developed from someone actually being the son of someone named John or Jack. Names such as Carpenter, Baker, and Smith are examples of a person s occupation being used as family names. In the Gospel, the name of one of the apostles, Bartholomew, simply means son of Tolmai (Bar meaning son in Aramaic). Jesus, when referring to Simon Peter, asks him, Simon Bar-Jona, do you love me? (Jn 21:16). Here, He identifies Simon Peter as the son of his father, John (or Jona). Throughout the Gospel, Jesus is referred to as Jesus of Nazareth (Mk 16:6), Jesus the Nazorean (Jn 18:7), Jesus, son of David (Mt 9:27), Jesus, the carpenter s son (Mt 13:55), and Jesus, the son of Joseph (Jn 6:42). By today s standards, any of these could have been used as the equivalent of Jesus last name. Always be ready to give a defense to anyone who asks you for the hope that is in you, but do it with gentleness and respect (1 Peter 3:15-16) Did Jesus Have A Last Name? - Ascension Press -
