Please call the rectory at to set up an appointment with a Priest. First time parents and godparents are required to attend a Baptism Preparation Session. Only when Certifi cates of Eligibility from godparents are presented, then a date for the baptism can be set. The Baptism Preparation Sessions are held the fi rst Sunday of the month at 12:00 PM in the Upper Church, with registration required. To register, please call the parish secretary during regular business hours (Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM). Registration must be made prior to the last Friday of the month. If no registrations are received, a session may not be held. 2 PASTOR S CORNER Instead of a Bible Study this autumn, I will be conducting a class on Thursday evenings at 7:00 PM starting September 14, entitled CATHOLICS IN AMERICA. Based on the book by Russell Shaw of the same name, we will look at the lives of 15 leading figures in American Catholic history saints, political figures, church leaders. Collectively, these individuals tell the story of the building and the shaping of the largest religious body in the United States. But this course is more than an historical survey of prominent personalities. We will explore the ongoing, often controversial, effort of Catholics to work out their identity in a secular, and sometimes hostile, society. The oldest question in the history of the Catholic Church in the U.S. may be this: Is it possible to be a good Catholic and a good American? We will study the variety of answers that have been given to date which demonstrate that the question is timelier now than ever before. EVERYONE IS WELCOME! How to Become a Catholic The RCIA - Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults STARTING THIS FALL If a spouse, relative, or friend is interested in becoming a fully initiated member of the Catholic Church, please encourage them to consider participating in our RCIA program. The classes are designed to open the hearts and minds of individuals to the saving grace of Our Lord through His Holy Catholic Church. This program is open to: * Inquirers, baptized and unbaptized * Those wishing to convert from another faith * Baptized but uncatechised Catholics who have not received First Communion and/or Confirmation * Returning Catholics who want a renewed understanding of the Catholic Church and her teachings. Please help build the Mystical Body of Christ, His Catholic Church, through evangelizing and encouraging individuals to become a Catholic. 4 FROM THE PASTOR S DESK A friend recently told me that she had a boss who was a micro-manager and wanted to know EVERYTHING my friend was doing. He d give her an assignment and then ask her about it almost every day. He drove her crazy, but she had to admit that he got a lot of work out of her. I think that Our Lord and the apostles felt the same way about the Canaanite woman in today s Gospel. She persisted. Let s be honest: She was something of a pest. She keeps calling out after us, the apostles complained to Our Lord. But she got results. The woman badly wanted her daughter to be healed and she kept after Jesus until He did what she requested. There s an important lesson there for all of us. We need to persist in our prayer with confidence and trust that Our Lord will give us what is best for us. It may not be what we want or expect, but the answer of Our Loving Lord to our persevering prayer will glorify God and benefit us in ways we may not fully understand in this life. Persevering prayer shows true faith and humble trust in God Who loves us so very much. We are very grateful for your wonderful generosity toward the missionary work Divine Word Missionaries do for the Catholic Church around the world. Your financial help and prayerful support make it possible for us to continue building up the Kingdom of God in some of the most difficult areas around the world. We are only able to spread the Gospel message with your prayers and generous support. We want to thank you for your warm welcome on the weekend of August 5 and 6. Brother Brian McLauchlin SVD Every summer the weekly offerings drop when parishioners are out of town for vacation and for most folks, if we aren t present at Mass, obviously, we aren t there to put our offering into the basket. In the meantime, the bills and necessary expenses to carry on the parish continue during the summer and must be paid. The Solution - You plan ahead for your vacation and make reservations and send deposits for your hotel and other accommodations. In the same way, why not put the offerings for the weeks you will be away into the offertory basket before you leave? Then you can enjoy your vacation knowing that the mission and ministry of the parish can continue unhindered as you enjoy your time of relaxation. HC 024 3

5 If you are traveling in the United States this summer and want to know where and when you can attend Mass, you can go on the web to: We will be having our annual Unpack Your Backpack Event on Wednesday, August 30, from 6:00 to 7:00 PM. You are welcome to stop by to drop off your child s school supplies (especially anything heavy that may be hard for the children to carry on their own). We will also have an orientation for all of our new families that evening. New Parent Orientation will take place in our Parish Hall, at 7:00 PM. We will consider a number of important items at this meeting, and we hope to see our new parents there. A note to our new parents: this is not the meeting with your child s teacher. This is general school information. Our Home and School Board will be on hand; our After School Director will also be there to field questions about our programs. Our school calendar has been uploaded to the school website. Please be mindful or our school schedule when planning family trips during the school year. Our new school year will begin for students in Grades 1 through 8 on Wednesday, September 6, with a full day of school. 6 THREE PARISH BOOK CLUB The next meeting of the Three Parish Book Club will be on Wednesday, September 27, at 7:00 PM, in the Parish Center of Holy Cross. At each meeting, we not only discuss the selected book (s) but also offer suggestions of books we personally enjoyed. In September, we will be discussing the summer reading selections and choosing November s book. You need not have read the month s selection to attend the meeting.
