2 Are we there yet? How much longer? We re in a period of waiting. The key is to wait well. How well do you wait? There is such a thing as active waiting. It is anything but dull and boring. In fact, it can take many twists and turns to say the least. This occurred to me recently as I was waiting. Automobile oil changes are part of the drudgery of modern life. The twist in my wait was in discovering that the shop to which I had driven, where I usually get my oil changed, couldn t squeeze me in on this particularly busy day just before Thanksgiving. Yet, my car was pleading with me: Oil change now! Now, what? That s when the turn came. I thought that, wow, every place must be busy today. What shop might be least busy? I thought that I would try a dealership, since most people prefer a more cost-effective alternative, unless of course, one has a free oil change deal. I don t. So, off to the dealership I went. Do you have an appointment? No? Hmmmm. Let s see...and after just a bit of hemming and hawing, the kind service writer said that he thought that he could fit me in. My car breathed a sigh of relief. Dealerships and many shops have customer waiting areas. They often have flat screen TVs with the most annoying of daytime shows playing. C mon down! You re the next contestant on the Price is Right! Ugh! Spare me! One can also read the available newspapers (remember those?)or magazines (to which no one that I know actually subscribes), enjoy a cup of coffee on the house (nothing like a little Repair Shop Arabica), or else those waiting can bury their faces in their cell phones while using the free Wi-Fi. Most it seems chose this latter option. I thought, well, I ll write. Waiting can be either interesting and productive or frustrating and annoying. Waiting in this life is what we make of it. The four weeks of Advent that we ve now begun are meant to be a time of preparation not purgatory, though some of the youngsters among us might disagree. While waiting that day, I noticed the woman in the green plaid shirt who just couldn t get enough of Drew Carey. Lord, help us! Another was engrossed in reading her book. Waiting all depends on what we do with our time, which is so relatively short, you know? Advent is a period of active waiting for Christmas. A Christmas well received depends upon an Advent well waited. In the midst of holiday deadlines and the rushing therewith, there will be plenty of necessary waiting. There will be waiting in line at the story or the market; waiting for the package to arrive via FedEx or UPS; waiting for the car in front of you to make its left turn and just get out of your way or simply waiting for your car as the oil is changed. In your waiting for Christmas, use the days and weeks of Advent not just to wait, but to wait well! Peace! Fr. Wilson 2018 DAY OF SANCTIFICATION FOR PRIESTS The priests of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia assemble each year for a day of prayer and reflection on the Sacred Priesthood. Please pray for all priests of the Archdiocese, especially that weekend and Monday, with the following prayer from the Roman Missal: Lord our God, Who in governing your people make use of the ministry of Priests, grant to these men a persevering obedience to your will, so that by their ministry and life they may gain glory for you in Christ, Who lives and reigns with You in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen. HC 024 1

The tally of the turkeys and fixings provided to our clients is still being gathered. During the month of November, Cub Scouts Pack 240 and Boy Scouts Troop 512 provided all of their gathered food to our pantry. The volume was significant to help our most in need in our community. YEA, SCOUTS!! In addition, the Clifton Heights Acme chose our pantry as their Food Pantry Neighbor of Choice. Our Food Pantry Volunteers sold Turkey Bucks, and along with all of the donations provided from Acme customers to the Acme associates, we received a large number of turkeys and the fixings. YEA, ACME!! What does this mean to you? As a result of all of this generosity, there will be No Food Collection during the month of December. God bless you for all you for your support all year and please know that you are making a difference in our community. HOLY CROSS SCHOOL HAPPENINGS Congratulations to our Holy Cross Second Graders who received their First Sacrament of Penance on Saturday, November 17. They were so excited to make this step in their sacramental journey. We had our first service project of the year with our Turkey Trot. We were able to raise $550 to assist a family this holiday season. Thank you to our students and parents for their wonderful generosity. We hope everyone had a safe and happy Thanksgiving Holiday. MY HOLY CROSS EXPERIENCE BY JUSTIN LANE, 8 TH GRADE Holy Cross has provided me with a good education and a place to make friends. If you come visit our school, it is friendly and welcoming. We have many activities to offer. We have good sports teams, especially basketball, but we offer band as well. You can find something for everyone. Our teachers are knowledgeable and they teach you a lot of things that other schools may not. They provide us with many different ways to learn. We learn Religion each day which doesn t happen in every school. In ELA we learn grammar as well as speaking skills. We are exposed to a large variety of stories both fiction and non-fiction. These reading and speaking skills help us to become fluent and to be able to function in our world. Holy Cross School has a lot of fun events like our Walk-a-thon, Halloween parade, and school trips. This year we are going to Gettsburg and maybe Washington DC. In the past we have gone to fun places such as Citizens Bank Park. Our older students provide tutoring for younger students if they are struggling. We also do community service for our own school on Earth Day as well as other times of the year by cleaning up around the school. We also help the Knights of Columbus with some of their activities. We do a yearly school show for our parents where we can show off our talents. When I graduate for Holy Cross School, I will miss my teachers, principal, friends and all of the fun events, especially Candlelight. My advice to our younger students is to stay on track, pay attention and be respectful to everyone and always try your best. Your Friends from the St. Vincent de Paul Holy Cross Food Pantry Team.

6 First Sunday of Advent Reflection by Rev. Leonard N. Peterson Advertisers have been at it for months now, long before Halloween, even going back to July, when most of us are thinking beach or mountains. At what? Talking about Christmas gifts. They remind us that Christmas is coming and shopping time is limited. For them, the purpose is certain: a profitable bottom line. With this First Sunday of Advent, as another Liturgical year begins, this short season of spiritual preparation has arrived. With it come those chosen Scriptures that at the start emphasize Christ s second coming, even though we think only of the first. So while we are busy decorating in bright reds and greens, the Church brings out sanctuary decorations and vestments of deep purple, with their sober symbolism of the need for penance. However, Advent does not come with the heavy seriousness of Lent. That season has its own themes. Advent seeks to remind us that while there was an historical beginning to the redemptive work of Christ, the finale is yet to come. We Christians must keep in mind that He is coming back at a time we do not know. There is a real value in reflection on that one stop to our life here below when eternal life begins. The entrance exam is our judgment by Christ. His verdict is of eternal consequence and irreversible. So in our Advent state of mind, we are obliged to strike a balance between the here and now, and the then and there. Balance is the key word. For example, the Church in wearing her purple does not seek to quash the many joys of the Christmas season. As a sponsor of healthy family life, she certainly knows the precious nature of time spent with family and friends. She just does not want us to be so carried away with rejoicing as to forget that one day we all will have to shuffle off this mortal coil to a different and better life in our true home. Also, she wants us to bear in mind that it was an adult, mature God-man Who suffered, died and rose for our benefit. We can consider our lives as one great Advent of preparing for that very personal one on One with Him. Advent offers the hope of a happy outcome of that meeting. That should offset any depression that could settle in our minds with the end of the Christmas season. The good news is that the same Jesus who will judge us has also given us the best preparation agenda. He came as a King of hearts. He showed us a loving lifestyle is the only one that guarantees our success at life. All we have to do is live it. Lord, make me an instrument of Thy peace; where there is hatred, let me sow love; Where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; Where there is darkness, light; and where there is sadness, joy. O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled, as to console; To be understood as to understand; to be loved, as to love; For it is in giving that we receive; it is in pardoning that we are pardoned; and It is in dying that we are born to eternal life. (Attributed to St. Francis of Assisi)
