Please call the rectory at to set up an appointment with a Priest. First time parents and godparents are required to attend a Baptism Preparation Session. Only when Certificates of Eligibility from godparents are presented, then a date for the baptism can be set. The Baptism Preparation Sessions are held the first Sunday of the month at 12:30 PM in the Upper Church, with registration required. To register, please call the parish secretary during regular business hours (Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM). Registration must be made prior to the last Friday of the month. If no registrations are received, a session may not be held. 4 FROM THE PASTOR'S DESK "The Road Less Travel~ is a self-help book by Dr. Scott Peck. One might thin he conceived his book after listening to today's Scripture readings* The basic theme of the book is that we must look e squarely in the eye and take it on whether or not it brings us joy or pain. Dr. Peck, a psych.iatrist, argues that, ultimately, avoiding truth and reality is in the end far more painful than facing it. We live in a society dedicated to persona, co:nfort. We want the quick fix or easy solution. Therefore, there is so much lying, cheating, stea1!.ng, unforglveness, contraception, abortion, euthanasia, divorce and indifference to the poor and SL."ffering. Dr. Peck tries to tell us that we should be! ft concerned be concerned instead with truth. with our comfort. We should If knowing and living the truth at all cost is our goal, then despite some discomfort, the real joy of Itfe will ultimately be ours. Those who seek only ort and not truth will never find that which they seek. Truth or comfort are once again the choices before us on this FiTst Sunday of lent. Lent is like a 40 day retreat the Church offers us - a time to go into tile desert, so to speak, for solitude. Now, for the Jews of Our Lord's time, the desert was no place for prayer - itwas the place to be put to the test. St. Mark tells us today that Jesus was tempted by Satan in the desert. This temptation was not an enticement for the Lord to sin. It was a test, a test to see who was stronger - Jesus or Satan. Like Jesus, we need to go into our personal desert this Lent and face the truth of our character t.rutts. e grow too comfortable with our "usual" sins. It's easier to confess them than to confront the Gospel, the Lord said urepent." Repent means to change our thinking and our behavior. So, with tbe help of God's grace, especiany through the Sacrament of Penance, we need to squarely face those parts of ourselves that are weak, flawed or lazy and change them. Change is painful. But, as Dr. Peck warns, if it is comfort we seek and therefore avoid the pain of growth, nothing will happen. We need to find out what is stronger - our love for God or our love of our personal comfort. We see in our t" reading that God gave us the rainbow as a promise of eternal life with Him. Only by facing our demons in the desert and in our daily lives, will we find our rainbow. 5 THE EXCEPTION THAT PROVES THE RULE "Retired" Monsignor James E. Mortimer considers himself blessed as well he should. At 88, he enjoys the robust health, boundless energy and sharp wit of a much younger man. This former pastor of Saint William Parish, former principal at Cardinal O'Hara High School, andformer driving force behind the worldfamous Cardinal Dougherty High School marching band has not slowed down in retirement. Inaddition to being available as needed at parishes throughout the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, Monsignor Mortimer served for three years as a regular substitute pastor at various parishes in South Dakota while the pastor was on a three-month sabbatical. For the past thirteen years, he has served as a volunteer confessor every October at the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes in France, hearing English-language confessions for five hours a day. rehabilitation facilities, and personal care for 50 retired and infirm priests. Regina Coeli currently provides an independent living community for 11 retired priests. Both Villa Saint Joseph and Regina Coeli depend to a great extent on the support they receive through your generosity to the Catholic Charities Appeal. 7 ARCHDIOCESE OF PHILADELPHIA Consultation of the Clergy and Faithful for the 2015 Synod of Bishops in Rome Pope Francis has called for an Ordinary Synod of Bishops in October 2015 on the theme, The Vocation and Mission of the Family in the Church and Contemporary World. The General Secretary of the Synod of Bishops, following a practice that typically antidpates every Synod, invites consultation on this topic to assist with its preparations A Preparatory Document has been issued by the Ho See to initiate this consultation along with a series of questions. Archbishop Chaput, in an effort to provide an opportunity for the clergy and fa ithful of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia to engage in this consultation in aswide a manner as possible has authorized the use of this instrument for local participation.
