2 PASTOR S CORNER The Catholic Charities Appeal is one of the most important appeals to which we can donate. The 2015 Catholic Charities Appeal: GIVING HOPE continues to build on last year's success and reach out to the entire Catholic community of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. Our generous donation can help so many people in need: the hungry, through the Community Food Program of Nutritional Development Services; young people with disabilities through schools of special education; immigrants through the Office of Cultural Ministries; couples preparing for marriage through the Office for Life and Family; families in need through mission parishes in underserved areas; and retired and sick priests. I intend to be more generous in my donation this year and I hope you will two. Here's something new and exciting!! Sponsored by the Holy Cross Social Committee, our parish is having an Oldies Night Beef in Beer in the Parish Hall on Saturday, February 7, from 7:00 to 11:00 PM. The cost is $15 per person or $25 per couple. Featured will be OJ Mark the Spark. Come for some fine food, dancing and parish fellowship - and - enjoy! 4 FROM THE PASTOR1S DESK Years ago I was called to jury duty. The judge was examining each possible candidate for the jury. When he beckoned to us, we were to stand and state our name, profession and marital status. My tum came. I stood and said: "My name is John Gabin. I'm a Catholic priest, and - I'm not married." The judge smiled and said, to everyone's laughter,: "Father, we would have easily guessed that!" The gift of celibacy, of being unmarried for the sake of the Kingdom of God, is a real jewel, a very important part of the priesthood. Priests embrace celibacy because Jesus, the High Priest, was celibate and because it points to and anticipates heaven - where Our Lord tells us there will be no marriage. Aside from the theological issues involved, St. Paul's words to the Corinthians in our 2 nd reading today provide a practical reason for priestly celibacy. The married is "divided," the apostle said, between his service to "the things of the Lord" and the care of his wife. Celibacy frees us priests to serve unreservedly the people of God. The beauty of celibacy enhances the importance and value of the priesthood. St. John Vianney taught: "After God, the priest is necessary. The priest brings us Jesus through the sacraments, his preaching and teaching and his example of faith and charity. Leave a parish without a priest and within 20 years it will be worshiping beasts." Priests are happy, fulfilled, normal, balanced men. Priests are human and face the same temptations as anyone does. Most priests I know are spiritual, dedicated men. We priests try to make a lifelong sacrifice to be free to serve the people. When we forgo the joys of marriage and parenthood, we do it out of love. How we need to pray for more priests. I believe young men are being called by Our Lord to be His priests, but the materialistic, self-centered, impure society we live in can drown out the call. and joy. May Our Lord grant our present priests and our priests-to-be the grace to serve the Church in faithfulness MANUP PH/LL Y The areas Largest Men's Spirituality Conference Date: March 7 Speakers: Scott Hahn (author 0/ Rome Sweet Home) Gus Loyd, Devin Schadt, and Jim Longon Men of all ages are welcome at this event. Mrs. Dawn Perry Principal We have two brand new programs for Reading and Math. They are utilized during technology class to help students increase their reading comprehension and math skills. We have a new website and it has been up and running since fall: Every teacher now has a two way radio in their V room in case of emergency or as a way to communicate with the office. We just started a Health and Nutrition Class for all students. We have created Crusaders Care student awards for doing kind deeds in school without being asked. Next school year school fees (lunch monitor, activity, and Religion book) will be included in tuition instead of paid as separate payments in the fall. Every morning and afternoon a student representative leads our community prayer. SPECIAL NOTE TO PARENTS AND GRANDPARENTS j Sophia Ward Alexa Mazzola Maria McNicholas Kelly Cook Congratulations to the winners of the Holy Cross Free Throw Championship: Brian Young John Champion Billy Coppock Robbie Tommy Michael Grasso Ward Bertoline Every Sunday at the 9:30 Mass we offer a special Child Liturgy for children, grades K-3. The children are led downstairs with an adult leader after the opening prayer to hearthe Word of God proclaimed to them on their level. Then they return again to their families upstairs during the Offertory. It is a wonderful way for these children to learn about their faith, and it gives their parents the opportunity to listen to the Readings and Homily without interruption. Please make every effort to bring your little ones to Mass with you at 9:30. Both you and they will benefit from this activity. HC 024 5
