The results were discussedat the meeting, I am very grateful to the 174 people from our parish who returned the survey. Go to our parish website at to see a summary of the results. The group also developed a recommendation to be presented to the Archdiocese regarding the future of the Springfield parishes. It included a suggestion to revise the processand schedule for future parishes that share unique situations and goals. There was common agreement on sharing specific pastoral ministries in the future. Also, each parish agreed to provide the Archdiocese with its own plan to reduce the debt. 4 FROM THE PASTOR'S DESK I have always been a big comics fan. every day. I enjoy reading the comics in the Inquirer Years ago in the Peanuts cartoon strip, artist Charles Schulz gave Charlie Brown a baby sister. Charlie became genuinely concerned about the condition of the world his sister was entering. He expressed those concerns to his friend Linus. But Linus interrupted Charlie's litany of the world's evils by contradicting him. UI think," said Linus, "that the world today isij.better than it was six years ago." Charlie protested: UDon't you read the papers, don't you watch television? How can you say the world is better today than six years ago?" And Linus answered simply: "t'm in it now." Now, in the mouths of some of us, that statement would sound arrogant. But it should be a truth that we all could utter on day. This could be that day! faith The more we are convinced of Our Lord's love for us, the more we walk on our and nourish it, the more of a good influence we will be for others. Our scripture readings today shout out the Lord's love for us - the responsorial psalm, St. Paul and Our Lord's compassion in the Gospel for the sick and possessed. Once we learn to respond to the Lord's truth and love through the ways the Church offers, what a real difference each of us can make in our families, parish, school, workplace and at play. By sunset today, we can make the world a more faithful our presence in it. and loving place through Imagine the effect if all of us here at Mass worked on that task today! FOOD PANTRY UPDATE Thank you for your generosity and support. The Super Bowl collection filled our shelves with plenty of soups and veggies. God bless all of those who participated in this effort. However, we still need peanut butter, jelly, pasta sauce, canned fruit, cereal, toilet paper, paper towels, dish soap and laundry detergent. The next parish collection is the weekend of February 14 and 15. Just a reminder - our Food Pantry is open on Wednesdays from 3:30 to 6:30 PM. If you know anyone in need in Delaware Co., please provide this information to them. Thanks again for all you do to ensure that our most in need have food and supplies for their families. We appreciate you. HC0243 V
5 MICK HANES AND OUR LADY OF CONFIDENCE DAY SCHOOL Courtney and Christopher Hanes' elation at the birth of their second child, Mick, was soon tempered by the realization that he had Down syndrome. Like all parents confronted with such news, their minds raced with concern for his future. Knowing that Mick would face unique challenges, they worked hard to find out how to give him not only the kind of education that would prepare him for life, but one that would also give him the Catholic identity that is so important to their family. According to his pre-school teacher's evaluation, Mick needed to be in a school where he felt loved and where he could be taught and given the tools to excel. They found exactly that at Our Lady of Confidence Day School. After carefully evaluating their options, Mick was enrolled in Our Lady of Confidence and the Hanes have not looked back. More than merely teaching them basic life skills for independence, Our Lady of Confidence teaches Mick and his classmates functional academics, such as reading, math, telling time and understanding money. In addition, the program includes occupational and physical therapy, speech and language therapy, music and art. Exposure to technology and current events helps Mick understand and appreciate the world around him. Plus, of course, the school guides him spiritually and emotionally. Now 11 years old, Mick has found a sense of belonging and pride at Our Lady of Confidence. He loves being there with his friends and with teachers who love him. Mick brings his parents great joy every day whenever he reads something new or shares what he learned in school. He recently showed his reading prowess at a restaurant. When his parents wanted him to order fish and chips, he pointed out that chicken fingers and French fries were also on the menu. Without the support of the Catholic Charities Appeal, Our Lady of Confidence would not be able to provide Mick and his classmates the one-of-a-kind education that they receive. And parents like Courtney and Christopher would have nowhere to send a child like Mick for both the special education he needs and the Catholic identity they want for him. Your generosity to the Catholic Charities Appeal tells the Hanes family and many others like them, that they are not alone. The Catholic Charities Appeal is the Archdiocese of Philadelphia's single most important fundraising initiative. The 2015 Catholic Charities Appeal: GIVING HOPE continues to build on last year's success and reach out to the entire Catholic community of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. 6 HOLYCROSS SCHOOLNEWS This week we will focus on all of the activities we participated in during Catholic Schools Week: 1. At Masses last week students of Holy Cross volunteered to speak about their school. 2. Sunday, January 25, we held a very successful open house for potential and current families. 3. Monday, January 26, was our "Service Day." Students wrote thank you cards to staff and volunteers; we held a canned soup drive, and had a career/vocation fair to expose students to different types of career/vocation opportunities. 4. Wednesday, January 28, we combined "teacher Appreciation and Show What You Know Days." The Home and School provided a wonderful lunch for the teachers and staff. We had parent volunteers come in to cover student lunches and recess so the staff could all eat together. In the afternoon students in grades Pre-K through 4 held a talent show for their fellow students, teachers, and families. We ended the day with grades 5-8 competing in a game show called "Are You Smarter than a Crusader?" 5. Thursday, January 29, was "Get up and Move Day." This day focused on health and wellness. Parents and our school lunch program provided fruits and vegetables for students to sample during snack time. At lunch, the Olive Garden supplied us with salad for students to try. In the afternoon, the entire student body joined together in the parish hall for Zumba and relay races. 6. Friday, January 30, was "Student Appreciation Day." This day was all about the student body. Free soft pretzels were provided for all students during snack time. The children got together with other classes to do fun activities throughout the day. At lunch, the Home and School provided Dollar Hot Dog;, we had more salad, and every student received a freeze pop. After lunch, we surprised students with the help of Mr. Roussis, the father of one of our students, by flying in the Jefferson Helicopter, along with bringing a Springfield fire truck, paramedic, and several ambulance crews. Students were then permitted to tour all of the vehicles and meet the everday heroes who spend their lives serving and saving others. We ended the day with an assembly to honor our January Students of the Month, our Crusader's Care recipients, some very special teachers (Mrs, Daciw, Miss Cleary, and Miss Hope), the class that brought in the most canned soup for the week, and the class that was voted to have the best Catholic Schools Week decorated door displaying Faith, Service and Knowledge! It was a very special week that celebrated Holy Cross Catholic School! We thank you for your continued support and prayers. HC0244
