Please call the Parish Offi ce for more information. First time parents and godparents are required to attend a Baptism Preparation Session. Only when Certifi cates of Eligibility from godparents are presented, then a date for the Baptism can be set. The Baptism Preparation Sessions are held the fi rst Sunday of the month at 12:00 PM in the Upper Church, with registration required. To register, please call the parish secretary during regular business hours (Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM). Registration must be made prior to the last Friday of the month. If no registrations are received, a session may not be held. 2 In that immaculate moment so beautiful, she gave her fiat and the whole world changed. My world changed. No, her name was not Mary, but Donna, and needless to say, she wasn t God s Mother, nor anyone else s at the time, but, she was my crush in Eighth Grade. My heart so raced when, after what seemed like an eternity of mental pondering and anguish on my part, she said yes to my most courageous and chivalrous, albeit nervous, request to dance. She was simply stunning in her pale blue dress and her long blonde hair, cascading gently upon her rosy cheeks, complemented perfectly the loveliness of her deep blue penetrating eyes. The radiance of her face was unmatched, causing, I believed in that moment, even the Angels to blush! Any semblance of priesthood in me was vanquished for the moment. I was in love. How could I not spend my life with her? And perish the thought that she wouldn t want to spend her life with me! Sure, she was a good bit taller than I - though, pretty much all the girls in my Eight Grade class were taller than I. I think they still are. Anyway, with face flushed, heart racing and body temperature arising. I don t know how I got through that ever so awkward first dance. But, somehow, I did (with a little help from Right Guard and Dad s Brut for Men) - and Donna and that dance have remained with me ever since. I am forever grateful! In a certain sense, ever since then, I ve never stopped dancing, though I ve long since fallen in love with a different dance partner. This time of year, with the Homecoming Dances, Harvest Festivals, Fall Formals, and Halloween Balls, had me thinking of that first dance of mine so long ago. Do you remember your first dance? Holy Cross was a parish known for its dances. Maybe we need to dance once again. Dances can cause faces to flush and body temperatures to soar. They can make little hearts go pitter patter - especially, in Eighth Grade. This is even more so the case when we muster up the courage, make the request, and engage in the Dance of our Faith. It s a dance that will change your world and stay with you forever! It s the fall season once again and time for our annual All Saints Salsa. How about you? Would you like to dance? Peace Fr. If you are able, we are in need of turkeys (any size) and the fixings to go with the dinner. If possible, please drop off your donation during our pantry hours (Wednesdays from 3:30 to 6:00 PM). If you are unable to come during this time, please contact Ellie Epperson at and I will make arrangements to pick up your donation. If you know anyone in need of food in Delaware County, please let them know that our pantry is here for them. Also, the Boy Scouts are looking for extra help for their annual food drive (which occurs November 10 - dropping off flyers and the 17 th - collecting the food). Our pantry receives a significant amount of canned goods from this drive that is critical to our mission of helping the most in need in our community. This Mass will be a Remembrance Mass for all those who have been buried from our Parish in the past year. All parishioners are welcome. Special invitations have been sent to the families of those we are remembering by name and a special candle service will take place at the Mass. 5 The Holy Cross Knights of Columbus Semi- Annual Pancake Breakfast will be held on Sunday, November 18 from 8:00 AM until 1:00 PM. Tickets for the breakfast will be $8 for Adults and $6 for Children (12 and under). There will be advance discounted tickets sold at $7 for Adults and $5 for Children (12 and under). Advance tickets will be sold after all Masses on the weekends of November 3 and 4, and November 10 and 11. Tickets will also be available from any of the Knights before November 18. **Note** - The Annual Cemetery Blanket Sale will begin on Sunday, November 18. 6 THIRTIETH SUNDAY Reflection by Rev. Leonard N. Peterson Ever tried to tune in to your favorite TV show only to find out that it has been cancelled? Most likely that was due to the show s low ratings. That measure has been around for more than 90 years, according to the website of the Neilson data and analytics company. Of course, each of us has our own rating system for a host of other things, even if our choice is unpopular. Reading the Bartimaeus story about his cure from blindness, especially in this context, leads me to offer my rating of this one handicap as the most difficult to endure. Put another way, I believe our eyesight is the most exquisite of the five senses. It gifts us with so much! Without it, our window on the world is closed. Light and color are impossible. And the sight of human faces, especially of those we love, would have to be left to our imagination. This list of the impossible only scratches the surface. What Our Lord gave that man who shouted out to Him from the roadside that day was not only a priceless gift but also a clear example of Jesus divine compassion and mercy. It is almost no wonder that Bartimaeus made the life-changing decision to follow Jesus along the way. Note that in those early days of nascent Christianity, the way was the name for discipleship. Before dwelling on what this decision must have meant for Bartimaeus future, I think it worthwhile to note the man s initial courage. He cried out loud for Jesus. He didn t let the shushing of the crowd hold him back from making what was tantamount to an act of faith. In these dark days for the Church in the wake of the clergy abuse scandal, one might be tempted to be quiet about being a Catholic. Or to yield to the shushing of the secularists among us who detest Christianity in general. Or worse, to forget that the Church is all about Christ and not about wayward priests and bishops. That faith of the blind man highlights the spiritual blindness of all the other people around him, who most likely only took to Jesus for His wonder working and not His teaching. We can only speculate what Bartimaeus did in his new life as a disciple of Jesus. Did he become a preacher, using his riveting personal story to attract others to Christ? Did he later marry and raise sons and daughters in the way also? And what did they do in return? We could well take the Mass as a kind of spiritual eye exam. Christ the Divine Physician looks into our lives to see how well we are doing with living His way as we listen with Him to the Readings from Scripture. Then, by Holy Communion on any given Sunday, He comes to us with the best medicine for our condition as we tackle another week of life. Yes, there are none so blind as those who will not see. But we are graced to view the world with eyes wide open and to have trust in the God Who sees us for the potential saints we are. Meanwhile, there is a growing suspicion that what the world needs now is a religion that will cover six days of the week. No doubt, the Catholic Church has the highest rating on that as long as we live its vision. HC 024 5
