Please call the rectory at to set up an appointment with a Priest. First time parents and godparents are required to attend a Baptism Preparation Session. Only when Certifi cates of Eligibility from godparents are presented, then a date for the baptism can be set. The Baptism Preparation Sessions are held the fi rst Sunday of the month at 12:00 PM in the Upper Church, with registration required. To register, please call the parish secretary during regular business hours (Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM). Registration must be made prior to the last Friday of the month. If no registrations are received, a session may not be held. Everyone is invited to a Pro-Life Rosary in our Church on Thursday, May 31, the Feast of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary - at 7:00 PM. Help us to pray for much greater respect for all human life in our land - for the poor, the disabled, the very sick and dying, the discriminated, the persecuted, and for the unborn, for an end to abortion. To honor the real and true presence of Jesus Himself in the Most Blessed Sacrament, on June 3 - the Feast of the Body and Blood of Christ - immediately following the 8:30 Mass, there will be a brief procession and Benediction from the front balcony. All are welcome to participate. Unlike Easter, which brings us the Risen Lord, Pentecost brings us the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is the more elusive member of the Blessed Trinity. Many of the past month and a half s Mass readings from St. John s Gospel and the Acts of the Apostles, however, have been pointing to this very moment. Our Lord Jesus Himself spoke emphatically of the outpouring of the Spirit. The descent of the Holy Spirit started the mission of the Church. The Holy Spirit leads us to the truth, brings people to conversion, intercedes for us, convicts the world of sin, brings us to holiness, defends and unites the Church and families and guides us to intimate union with God. What more could we ask!? We possess the Holy Spirit by desiring Him and opening our hearts to Him in our daily prayer and in the sacraments of Penance and Holy Communion we receive. St. Paul in his letter to the Galatians lists the qualities of life we show when we truly possess the Holy Spirit: we are people of love, joy, peace, patient endurance, kindness, generosity, faith, gentleness and self-control. The Holy Spirit is with us 365 days of the year. Today is Pentecost, but every day is the day of the Spirit. Let us pray that the Holy Spirit comes and makes His home in us. HC 024 2

4 PENTECOST AND THE HOLY SPIRIT What are you doing for Pentecost? By Lorene Hanley Duquin It s a question that you probably don t hear much. People get excited and plan ahead for most holidays, but Pentecost isn t usually one of them. In fact, many people don t really understand what Pentecost is or why it is so important in the Church calendar. The Story of Pentecost Pentecost commemorates the coming of the Holy Spirit to the apostles. After Jesus rose on Easter, He appeared to the apostles over the next 40 days, teaching them the significance of what had happened to Him. They listened, but didn t really understand, so Jesus promised to send the Holy Spirit, Who would enlighten them and give them everything they would need to carry the Good News to people all over the world. Then Jesus ascended into heaven, and the apostles were more confused than ever! They gathered in an upper room with the mother of Jesus to pray. Ten days later they heard a loud noise, and the Holy Spirit descended upon them in tongues of fire. When that happened, they received spiritual gifts that transformed their lives and gave them the power to touch the lives of other people. They ran into the streets and began to tell people about Jesus. Each person in the crowd understood the apostles in his or her own language. Thousands became believers that day. Today we celebrate Pentecost as the birthday of the Church. Who is the Holy Spirit? The Holy Spirit is the Third Person of the Trinity, or the eternal Spirit of God. Some people try to explain the Holy Spirit as the power of love and truth that emanates from the Father and the Son. Whenever you feel as if you are being called by God or inspired to do something, it is usually a movement of the Holy Spirit. One of the most important lessons a parent can teach a child is how to listen to the Holy Spirit. Begin by asking your children after Mass what message they heard in the readings, in the music, in the homily or in their prayers after Communion that seemed to speak to their souls. Then help them to recognize that this is how the Holy Spirit works in their lives. Gifts of the Holy Spirit The spiritual gifts that the Spirit brings are wisdom, understanding, knowledge, good judgment, courage, reverence and awe (Isaiah 11:2). Suggestions to Celebrate Pentecost * Let your children help make a birthday cake and celebrate by singing Happy Birthday to the Church! * Read the Pentecost account with your family from the Acts of the Apostles (2:1-47). Then go out in the backyard and make a bonfire together. Talk about the power of the symbol of fire and how the Holy Spirit came to the apostles through fire. * Write the gifts of the Holy Spirit on pieces of paper. Let each family member take a gift. Then talk about how they can use their gift throughout the year. Prayer to the Holy Spirit Holy Spirit, come into our hearts. Bring the lightness of your light, the warmth of your love, and the fullness of your truth so that our lives may be pleasing to you in every way. Amen.

5 HO LY CROSS PARISH NEWS Our Parish Carnival will be held Tuesday, June 12, to Saturday, June 16. Please consider donating a case of water or pack of 12 oz. canned soda (Coke, Pepsi, Sprite). We will be collecting in the church entrances at all Masses starting this weekend, May 12 up until the Carnival start date. If you would like to make a monetary contribution to the carnival, please put it into an envelope marked for Holy Cross Carnival with your name and drop it into the collection basket at any Mass. We also will be adding a special In Memory Of sponsorship this year for $25. The In Memory Of will be on a special display during the carnival. Please mark envelopes accordingly with Holy Cross Carnival, In Memory Of and the name of the person you would like listed. We certainly appreciate any and all donations! Tickets will also be on sale after the Masses on May 19-20, May 26-27, June 2-3, and June We will have a 50/50 that night with just the dinner people. Please try to join us.
