Please call the rectory at to set up an appointment with a Priest. First time parents and godparents are required to attend a Baptism Preparation Session. Only when Certifi cates of Eligibility from godparents are presented, then a date for the baptism can be set. The Baptism Preparation Sessions are held the fi rst Sunday of the month at 12:00 PM in the Upper Church, with registration required. To register, please call the parish secretary during regular business hours (Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM). Registration must be made prior to the last Friday of the month. If no registrations are received, a session may not be held. 2 Pastor s Corner Happy New Year! I pray that God s Grace and Peace Will fill your lives in THANK YOU! A very sincere thank you to all who gave so generously once again this year in response to the requests of families in need on the giving tree. Eleven families received a multitude of gifts to make for a very Merry Christmas for their children. A huge thank you to the Knights of Columbus for their more than generous contribution and to our eighth grade gentlemen who helped sort the mountain of gifts that were provided. God bless you and our sincere wishes for a blessed and happy new year. The Respect Life Committee MARCH FOR LIFE You are invited to the annual March for Life in Washington, D.C., on Friday, January 19. It is necessary that we stand up for the sacredness of all human life and this is a wonderful way to do it. In Washington we will visit first the National American History Museum and the National Natural History Museum. Then we will join the March and walk to the Capitol and Supreme Court Buildings where we will greet Archbishop Chaput. Parish bus will leave the church parking lot at 7:30 AM and return by 8:00 PM. 4 FEAST OF THE HOLY FAMILY Many people are traveling during this holiday season. One of the airlines has a poster that greets passengers just inside the gangway as they board the aircraft. It says: If you are still talking on your cell phone when you read this, you need a vacation! One pastor who laughed when he read the poster thought he could reword it and hang it inside his church. His poster would read: If you still have your cell phone turned on after entering this space, you need to ask: Why? The first years of this century have not been kind to families. The speed and demands of life rob families of time. Working parents shuttle kids to the day-care center to be raised by professional Care-givers, race through the fast-food drive-through after picking the children up in the evening, and then spread their office work across the kitchen table and urge the kids to go play somewhere else. The kids plop in front of the videos, hoping to shoot and kill all the bad guys - and when they get bored with that, they shoot the good guys. Many families have only one parent trying to do it all. Our feast today begs for families to slide a little closer together in the pews and listen attentively. The family we celebrate today, the Holy Family, has much to teach us about our fast-paced lives. What made this family holy? We cannot give Jesus all the credit for this. The holiness of this family came from dad and mom s response to God. Joseph and Mary made their faith, their religion and their religious practices their highest priority. As we look at our own children, we might ask what kind of environment they are coming out of, children do learn what they live. Jesus did, and so will ours. Do our children see us constantly on the cell phone with one hand and trying to drive the car with the other? Or is the phone away so mom or dad can ask: What did you do at school today? Our readings today are directed to children as well. The work of parents is so like God s that to dishonor our parents is to also dishonor God. Making a family holy, therefore, does not all rest on dad and mom s shoulders. Every family member has a role. Not everyone will choose to follow Jesus through His Church, and thus there will be division and pain. Not every family is devoted to making itself a success. Not every family is devoted to its faith or religious practices. Simeon s words from today s Gospel might as well be for these families - they, too, will be pierced with a sword. Our Lord calls families to stay reconciled to one another and to Him. The real test of a family is how well its members work at fulfilling this call from God. The Holy Family should not be the only one. Our families can be holy too, but only if we choose to follow and stay close to Jesus. HC 024 3

5 MARY, MOTHER OF GOD. Over a hundred years ago, a university student found himself in a train by the side of a person who seemed to be a well-to-do-peasant. He was praying the rosary and moving the beads with his fingers Sir, do you still believe in such outdated things? asked the student of the old man. Yes, I do. Do you not? asked the man. The student burst into laughter and said: I do not believe in such silly things. Take my advice. Throw the rosary out this window and learn what science has to say about it. Science? I do not understand this science! Perhaps you can explain it to me, the man said humbly with some tears in his eyes. The student saw that the man was deeply moved. So to avoid further hurting the man s feelings, the student said: Please give me your address and I will send you some literature to help you in this matter. The man fumbled in the inside pocket of his coat and gave the boy his visiting card. On glancing at the card, the student bowed his head in shame and became silent. On the card read: Louis Pasteur, Director of the Institute of Scientific Research, Paris. Thanks to the process developed by Dr. Pasteur called pasteurization, we can drink milk safely today. As we begin this new year, more than ever before we need the help and protection of the rosary. We need to often take time, even every day, to reflect on the mysteries of the rosary and apply and relate them to our daily lives. We can use the decade of Hail Marys as a kind of background music to think: what does this mystery teach me? How does it encourage or inspire me? How can I imitate the life of Our Lord and Our Lady? Each of us needs to cultivate towards Mary a close, personal relationship of childlike love and confidence. This should not be difficult. Mary is indeed like all mothers, but her perfection, position and power of intercession make her a mother beyond all comparison. ATTENTION,PARENTS AND GRANDPARENTS Our Children s Liturgy of the Word program is available for your children at the 11:00 AM Mass. We hope you will encourage your little ones to hear the Word of God spoken to them at their level. They have the opportunity to interact with the teacher and each other. Then they return to worship with their families and the Holy Cross Community. JESUS, MARY AND JOSEPH PRAY FOR US. 6 DEVELOPMENT OF THE UNBORN BABY THIRD MONTH Your spiritually adopted baby is quite active. Even though her mother cannot feel her yet, your baby kicks and flips herself around her secure watery world. Her eyes have closed so that the delicate eyeballs can finish developing. Her cartilage skeleton begins to change over to real bone. Your baby sucks her thumb, hiccups when she swallows the amniotic fluid, and can close her fingers around an object placed in her hand. Your baby s face is very expressive she will squint, frown and smile! Your baby is now 3 inches long and can hear outside noises. Her favorite sound is her mother s voice!
