Please call the Parish Offi ce for more information. First time parents and godparents are required to attend a Baptism Preparation Session. Only when Certifi cates of Eligibility from godparents are presented, then a date for the Baptism can be set. The Baptism Preparation Sessions are held the fi rst Sunday of the month at 12:00 PM in the Upper Church, with registration required. To register, please call the parish secretary during regular business hours (Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM). Registration must be made prior to the last Friday of the month. If no registrations are received, a session may not be held. 2 Urko was cool. Urko was an ape. Urko was my all-time favorite Halloween costume. He was the Gorilla General in the Planet of the Apes television series - way back in the 70s. He was the Chief of Security and in charge of all military garrisons. He had a commanding presence as any ape should and knew that these humans are dangerous. With a little evangelizing effort, he might have made a good priest-pastor. Though my mother was not a seamstress, she went to much trouble consulting neighboring moms more skilled; checking with her young son as to the details from a TV Guide image of the General; loving and carefully making and creating the costume of the feared beast. A son hugged his mother especially hard after the task was completed. The foray would begin early on All Hallows Eve lasting until well after dark. The imposing General canvassed the Neighborhood Kingdom and demanded candy from the humans - and candy he would get. The humans would make such offerings so as to be mercifully left in peace by the General and his army costumed in full battle array. At evening s end when the expedition had concluded, General Urko relished in all his sweet booty piled high upon the kitchen table letting out a roar and thumping his chest such that the orangutan Councillor Dr. Zaius (a.k.a. Dad )was telling the General to keep it down. I know many adults who really like Halloween. Maybe that s because it brings them back to their own childhood and many a candy treasures had. Halloween is a time to put on a costume in jest. Too many, it seems, wear costumes in all seriousness too afraid of what a mask removed might reveal. How spooky is that? If Halloween is a time for putting on costumes, then surely, the following day is one for taking them off. Having poked fun at the devil and his minions for every little witch or warlock; ghost or gorilla seen, the Day of All Saints allows us to stand up in the daylight with masks removed revealing who we truly are and what we are called to be saints in the making. This Halloween, thump your chest and roar! Then take off the mask and be a saint in the making! There is a very sweet booty, indeed, that awaits us! Peace! Fr. 4 COMMUNAL ANOINTING OF THE SICK SATURDAY, OCTOBER 20 The Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick will be celebrated at Mass on Saturday, October 20, at 11:00 AM in the Upper Church. Our communal celebration of the Sacrament is an opportunity for our parish to pray together for the Lord s healing to come upon our sick brothers and sisters. Refreshments will be served in the Parish Hall immediately following the Mass. It is a great help to us if you pre-register. To register for the Communal Anointing, please call our Pastoral Minister, Judy Vacca, , and leave a voice mail message by Monday, October 15. Remembrance Mass All Souls Day There will be a special 7:00 PM Mass on All Souls Day, Friday, November 2. This Mass will be a Remembrance Mass for all those who have been buried from our Parish in the past year. All parishioners are welcome. Special invitations have been sent to the families of those we are remembering by name and a special candle service will take place at the Mass. There will be refreshments in the Parish Hall after Mass. All are welcome. Please let us know if you plan to attend. Call Judy Vacca, Donations and volunteers are needed for the Mass of Anointing of the Sick, Saturday, October 20. EXCITING NEWS THE CLASSH-ROOM HOSTED BY RICHARD CURTIS PHILADELPHIA The ChassH-Room is a triviabased game show for school teachers and students (grades 7-12). Each episode of The ClassH-Room features students and teachers from the same school competing against each other. In light of this request by the Holy Father, I am happy to announce that beginning this World Mission Sunday, October 21, 2018, the Archdiocese of Philadelphia will dedicate the year leading up to October 2019 as the Extraordinary Year of Mission. On World Mission Sunday, as we begin this Extraordinary Year of Mission, you are asked for a response in the way of your prayers and help to reawaken this calling to be missionary and to work with a new impulse to further the missionary transformation of life and pastoral activity. The Pontifical Mission Societies were born of devoted hearts as a means of supporting the preaching of the Gospel to every nation contributing to the human and cultural growth of all those who thirst for truth. The prayers and the material aid generously given and distributed through the Societies enable the Holy See to ensure that those who are helped in their personal needs can in turn bear witness to the Gospel in the circumstances of their daily lives. It is my hope during this year each one of us is frequently reminded of our vocational call, by our baptism, to be missionaries.
