2 Times Square has its famous Waterford Crystal Ball. Harrisburg has its Strawberry. Hershey raises a Kiss, while Pottsville raises a Yuengling (Sounds great to me!). We simply raised our pots and pans. Towns and cities have their own various traditions for welcoming in the New Year. Well, we had our own little tradition in the neighborhood where I grew up. Throughout history, people have welcomed in the new year or the new season or the new whatever it was whereby the passage of time was marked (new monarchs or rulers, new empires or reigns, new priests or patriarchs, new palaces or temples, etc.). It was always a moment to pause and reflect on what had been and to look forward in hope towards what will be. People need hope. People long for it. This is what celebrating the New Year is all about. Christians, especially, should celebrate, because Christians are a people of hope. A Christian without hope is a contradiction. What s interesting is that we celebrate the New Year, but God doesn t. For Him, Who is Eternal, it s not new. What God does celebrate eternally is that moment when Eternity pierced through time and space (Incarnation) and drew it up unto Itself (Resurrection). Wow! It boggles the mind! And thus, the reason for pots and pans, they re not so mind boggling! Now, don t ask me how it got started. I suppose it was just, as they say, a simpler time. The celebration of the New Year at the stroke of midnight would begin, of course, with the watching of good old Dick Clark and his New Year s Rockin Eve. Neighbors would freely come in and out of each other s houses. All would be glancing at the TV while holding their drinks and hors d oeuvres waiting for the final countdown when the ball in Times Square dropped. Then, it happened...three, two, one...happy New Year! I would quickly kiss my parents, then run out onto the front porch in my Scooby-Doo PJ s. Put your coat on! It s cold, barked my Dad. The neighbors next door would also be out. Our row houses had an adjoining porch and their son, my buddy, Joey, proudly sported his Hong Kong Phooey night robe. Together we would all raise our pots and pans and with metal or wooden spoons start banging and clanging and screaming as loud as we could in the cold night air. Happy New Year! Sure, it was silly, but what great fun! It was a hope and a prayer and a wish and a reality all at the same time. You see it was already a Happy New Year, because we were with neighbors and family and friends - and we were celebrating not that which will be, but that which already was. The memory, for me, is as clear today as the day it happened. Indeed, that is what the New Year is like for God. So, grab a pot or pan (or maybe, even a Yuengling). Bang away and celebrate - not that which will be but that, which already is! A Blessed and Happy New Year! Peace! Fr. Wilson Holy Day of Obligation Solemnity of Mary, The Holy Mother of God Masses - Dec Vigil 4:30 PM January 1-8:30 AM IMPORTANT! PLEASE NOTE! Beginning in January 2019, there will be a slight change in the Weekday Mass Schedule. After consulting with the Liturgy Committee and the Pastoral Council, I have decided to alter the Weekday Mass Schedule since I am the only priest assigned to and residing at Holy Cross Parish. There will be no Mass offered at Holy Cross on Thursdays beginning January 3 and Friday Masses will be offered at 12:15 PM beginning on January 4. With a number of parishes within a short drive offering morning Masses those days, I am hopeful that all needs can be accommodated, including my own. Listed below is the new schedule for Holy Cross as well as the Mass times at several neighboring parishes for both Thursday and Friday. I greatly appreciate your understanding! Fr. Wilson Holy Cross Mass Schedule (beginning January 2019) Mon. - Tues. - Wed. 8:30 AM/ Fri. 12:15 PM (Thurs. - no Mass) Sat. 8:30 AM - Sunday Mass Schedules remains the same. Devotion to the Holy Family started slowly, became more widespread, and was made a feast day for the entire Church in The images we have of the Holy Family might seem a little intimidating at first. Who can live up to that ideal? It helps to remember that besides being the Son of God, Jesus was fully human, as were Mary and Joseph. That means their family had struggles and difficulties too. After our rush to get ready for and celebrate Christmas Day, the feast of the Holy Family is a great day to spend in prayer and relaxation. 8:30 AM People of Holy Cross 11:00 AM Foy - Greenleaf Families

FOR MORE INFORMATION, PLEASE CONTACT REGINA SCHEERER AT THE MYSTERY OF THE MAGI: WHO WERE THEY? The Gospel of Matthew contains the only New Testament reference to these mysterious visitors from the East. Matthew does not refer to them as kings but as magi, astrologers, or wise men, depending on which translation of the Bible we read. The magi were a community of Persian holy men who studied the stars. They were very respected in their day, considered to be wise because they foretold the future and people s destinies. Both chapter 60 of the prophet Isaiah and Psalm 72, long associated with this day, refer to kings worshiping God s Son, and that may be why we think of the magi as kings. HC 024 4

6 FEAST OF THE HOLY FAMILY Reflection by Reverend Leonard N. Peterson There is a charm in making a stew, to the unaccustomed cook, from the excitement of wondering what the result will be, and whether any flavor save that of onions will survive the competition in the mixture. So wrote Annie Besant, the British philosopher, socialist writer and activist who died in For her, it was certainly a down to earth topic. Recently, I took on the challenge of cooking up a good beef stew of my own with the help of a good online recipe and a long-shelved slow cooker. I must say that the aroma from the kitchen lasted most of the day and did its part assisting the furnace in providing an overall warmth on a gray and drizzly day. By now you are probably wondering what all this talking about stew has to do with talking about today s feast of the Holy Family. To begin, just as a hearty stew brings together a mix of vegetables, so our families gather together a group of differing personalities with their gifts and quirks, to blend into a contribution that graces our whole human society. St. Paul in his Letter to the Colossian, read today, makes another kind of stew by naming the gifts that blend together and make Christian family life possible. It is good for us to pay attention to his ideas, as this beautiful feast occurs amid the celebration of Christmas. Like no other time of year, this season brings the family together, often enough these days from far-flung places, to rekindle relationships or perhaps heal them, and then to place knees under the one table for meals. There are enough somewhat nasty jokes and cynical comments out there avowing that all families are in some way dysfunctional. Yes, and most of us laugh as we view the Chevy Chase classic Christmas movie about the messy holiday happenings with the Griswolds. We may feel an unspoken relief that as crazy as our own extended family may be, we re not that bad by comparison. Our Church would rather ask us today to look at the very special model we call the Holy Family. This is not that we are to be frustrated by their perfection as much as we can be inspired by their virtues. Above all this stands the marvelous truth that when God Himself came from His heaven to our earth for a lifesaving visit, He did it as member of a family. When He preached His revelatory message, it was to tell us that we have a loving Father Who wants us to be united as a family. At the end of His life, while hanging ignominiously on a cross, He capped off His mission by giving us all a perfect spiritual Mother to complement our earthly one. Asking if family life is threatened today is something like asking if the sky is blue. There are a host of sociological pathologies to blame for this. No doubt, technology has a share of the blame game, if you just consider how even our cell phones ring for attention at some family dining tables, not to omit what sometimes happens at the Eucharistic Meal itself. In terms of priorities, the old adage of Family first is still valid. In terms of holiness and expertise in responding to God s love, the real First Family for us is that of Jesus, Mary and Joseph. It is so important to note that their holiness was not some dreary parody of the same, featuring folded hands and lowered eyelids. Rather it was based on humility and unwavering obedience despite very real challenges such as a lost boy and His strange explanation. HC 024 5
